If you look at the mold on the wood shelf it is quite clear that the problem was water leaking from the ceiling on to the BMS.

Some older bms systems have large parasitic losses and will shut off discharge but not the brain and that is what pulls the weak cells down to nothing

Yes, they need to be compressed. LithiumSolar channel has a good idea how to compressed these batteries. Four of my sixteen batteries pack are swollen too, so it must be defective chemical composition of these cells.

I think they should be fine if you try to recharge them. Dead and puffy lithium polymer cells shrink a bit once I charge them to about 3.7V, so these might shrink too. LFPs are generally safe, I accidentally charged mine up to 4v per cell and it was fine. No signs of puffing even though it was pouch cells. But still, 3.65v limit is there for a reason. Edit: Your cells might not have gas buildup but layers expanded. This happens with these big cells as you use them no matter what (granted, the expansion is typically several millimeters after years and years of use), this is why you need a case to keep them from expanding.

The bms is always consuming the electric the smart bat protect is monitoring after the bms and can not control it .Hence the flat battery
@SuperBrainAK
@SuperBrainAK 3 года назад
well you are right, the BMS and battery protect are all still using some sort of power, and that continued to discharge after it was already rather low. So word of advice when taking a battery out of service, remove the BMS so the cells are completely disconnected. You could go one step further and disconnect the cells from each other so there isnt a higher potential across the batteries which in certain situations can even slowly discharge through the air or some other odd phenomenon.

If your cells had been compressed they would have vented. They seem massively puffed up but keep in mind how little pressure it takes to deform the case is maybe 1psi? I would be curious to see what would happen if you compressed them while puffed up to see if the vent is still functional.

That happened to me too with some LifePo4 bricks like yours but smaller and each cell was down to 2.2v. I thought they were stuffed and just left them all disconnected. Some time later I noticed the swelling had gone down and so I tried charging them and they all charged back up OK. I have them in a compression setup up now too. I haven't capacity tested them yet, but they took a decent amount of AH to charge up.
@jhg-lm8fb
@jhg-lm8fb 3 года назад
No worries. Just squeeze them back by building a wood frame with 2x4 and use them for another 10 years. If you read the spec it stated lifepo4 shall be compressed. My batteries looked like that when they were over charged and I was fiddling with BMS a winter day, didn't expect the batteries would overcharge up here in these polar areas a winter day (south Sweden). You will notice a slight lower discharge rate but capacity will remain same.
@Sylvan_dB
@Sylvan_dB 3 года назад
They may well be recoverable. Not to their original capacity, but usable. They would have likely faired better with compression, or else the pressure relief (the little fitting on top between the terminals) would have popped. I'd put on some safety goggles, a face mask, and strap them together to apply some moderate compression and start them at a low charge current to get them up over 2.5 Volt

BMS- Battery Murdering System, stopped using them 14 years ago, always cell monitored on charge and just discharged to a conservative level using a power and volt meter, BMS would have been trying to balance the pack, it's also possible the disconnect relay was drawing off current as well, good to see you back in the shed mate.
@a-aron2276
@a-aron2276 3 года назад
BMS is normally powered through the bms lead (and the battery negative is some but not all cases) mine only needs the balance leads. Normally, i almost got caught myself with a pesky bms, they were down to 2.8-3v on ncr18650pf cells, I can't remember exactly but what I do remember is thinking"oh shit, get those charged ASAP".
@j.k4825
@j.k4825 3 года назад
And that kids, is why you don't buy a seperate port BMS... Always common port.
@MrButuz
@MrButuz 3 года назад
Can't discharge to near 0 and expect things to go well! Thats why an active BMS should always be used as the BMS will cut the load, and itself off to avoid draining to 0. What happened to your bats is not so much to do with not being compressed together, more to do with being drained to 0 and then charged again? Battery compression will "hide" the damage more, but the damage will still be there inside the cell.

Hi Andy. I've been running your 1500w ebike kit for 7 months now and it would be great if you could do a video on the best way to look after the battery, I.e. charging and setting up the handlebar computer. I've done close to 2000 miles on it , using it for commuting. It gets charged twice a day and I notice a powe drop off when the battery gets to around 75%. The battery never gets fully discharged, but would be helpful to know the best way for longevity purposes. Regards Brad P.S. The kit is fantastic 👌

The Victron battery protect still consumes around 0.7mA even with the link removed - the only way to fully shut it down is to pull the connector with the ground lead out. I know it’s not a lot, but even the smallest “drip” drains a tank in the end. So sad to see those “blimpy” batteries, I’m sure they had loads more life in them, had they not been damaged. 🔋🔋🔋👎👎👎

Swollen Battery means u need a new battery would get rid of it because Swollen batteries, while not common, are a significant risk. They are the result of too much current inside a cell of the battery, which causes a build-up of heat and gas This can be caused by overcharging, manufacturer defect, deep discharge, or damage to the battery take them back to where u bought them to see if u can get a replacement they should be covered under the 5-year warranty on them would replace all the parts and wires something is causing it to become damaged....
