BIGGS PICTURE JASPER! NEW VEIN uncovered in Oregon

Kate and Jim head to Biggs, Oregon to explore a newly uncovered vein of Biggs Picture Jasper. The fascinating gemstone has been unavailable for many years, as most of the material is on private land - but recent roadwork uncovered new veins, which have been rapidly collected by intrepid rockhounds. In this video, Jim successfully hews two HUGE chunks of the jasper from the wall, while Kate is fooled into collecting a big pile of basalt. No worries, though - there's still PLENTY of jasperlicious goodness!

Jaspers are like the begonias of the plant world. There isn't just one example. There is tons of hues tons of colorful patterns. Nature truly is so beautiful. If we stop for a moment to appreciate her.😁

Life is full of successes and failures. The reason we think others only succeed is because most of us hide the times we fail. I don't, as I think a) it's funny, and b) it helps other people understand their process is normal.

You might try a scratch test to see if you can differentiate it that way, iron shouldn't scratch jasper and jasper should scratch un-tempered glass. By comparison both glass and iron should scratch basalt easily

@@KatyDidRocks Got some more goodies for you.Head south to Wasco then east towards the John Day river. Up along the banks of the road descending down to the John Day watch the rock seams. You;ll find some beautiful yellos(lemon) to chartreuse agate in those seams. It's opalized so it's a little brittle but as you dig deeper it hardens. As with most opal long exposure to heat and freezinf wrecks it. Happy hunting.
