Your version of this old classic has brought me many feelings, Joe. Really sincere playing, although vapourish, akin to a dream... Thanks very much, indeed.
I think something about the Vibramate that doesn't seem to get talked about, is how it raises the Bigsby up a fair amount -- and that is a *good* thing in my opinion. I think a lot of the potential tuning problems that come with this model of Bigsby are caused by the rather extreme break angle of the strings coming off the bridge and going under the roller bar. There is a company that makes a modded roller bar that sits higher to lessen the break angle, and the Vibrate bridge accomplishes the same thing. I found another, alternative free solution for mine. I wasn't worried about screwing into my 1970s Kay les paul copy when I decided to install a Bigbsy, so I found that leaving the tailpiece bolts screwed down into the mounting studs and setting the Bigsby right on the bolt heads worked perfectly. Keeps the flat Bigsby up off the arched body, and raises the break angle of the strings significantly. No tuning issues.
Now THAT'S an interesting new piece of gear...... I've always wanted to try a Bigsby on my LP, but without the permanency and commitment which the standard model requires. Looks like a winner.
Thanks sooooo much for playing a John Barry composition on guitar...don't think I've ever heard him played on a six string. Beautiful...just beautiful!
kennethru - Faint No More also did a great version of Midnight Cowboy. Although that version features a lot more bagpipe :) Anyway - beautiful playing Joe!
+tonefiend by joe gore I was wondering what you would recommend more. I'm in the process of customising my EPi LPstandard and a bigsby b7 is a feature im planing on adding. The thing is I cant decide what will be best vibramate or drilled in see logic is telling me screwed to the wood will hold beter resonance and sustain than what a vibramte would. Have you compared both and did you have any noticeble feel or difference. the other thing was I feel that the vibramate would have a quicker wear on the holes because of floating presure but it might be an unjust fear. Thanks btw great video
Thanks for posting Joe. what a very nice looping comp you put together! Very soothing indeed. I have a 79 Les Paul KM cherry SB, that clocks in at 2 lbs more than my 72 Goldtop! She's heavy but oh those pups do rock!
I hope you liked the movie Midnight Cowboy as much as I did. I saw it when I was real young and its still my favorite movie with Cinema Paradiso 🤷♂️, great music throughout the whole movie. 🍻🍻🍻🍻 You nailed the tone and the dynamic of the song, really cool in my book 🍻
tonefiend by joe gore Thx for taking the time to answer, by the way I did not know you were ....a professional artist...But I am looking into your stuff (pedals) and reading a little bout you and its pretty cool. You seem like you are having fun and you do a very nice interpretation of songs, gonna listen to your youtube videos a little more. Take care joe (from Montréal ) 🍻
Joe, I just wanted to say BRAVO for this channel of yours and for your website. Seriously man I just discovered you, your musical legacy, your endeavors and I am really impressed, I instantly recommended everything you do to all of my friends. Not just that your playing is impecable, your taste in guitars, vintage effects, amps, is just out of this world. I am subscribed to a lot of channels but from the moment I've seen yours it has come top of my list. Please continue doing what you do, you are just an awesome weird dude that is a pleasure to listen to. Cheers!
***** I was dead serious Joe. If only I were in your country even hehe, it would be a privilege to learn guitar from you. Keep these videos coming, I am anxious to see more!
I can see now , the plate works as a shimm , to cut down on the angle . You have very good touch and control , and make everything sound good . I'm just now getting back into electric guitar , after playing acoustic for thirty five years , Feels strange but good . Put 12s on it and has a Bigsby with three p90s . Lots of fun ! Thanks Joe , for showing us you're stuff .
I was looking for a video about bigsbys on les pauls, saw the thumbnail and thought "that guy plays well" based on your percolator vid(s). I was not prepared for this treat to my ears. I honestly want to go out and buy what ever music you have recorded. Looking you up as soon as I'm done this comment. I know the tune from Faith No More back in the day. Man I wish I had your chops!
Very nice brother! beautiful work on a beautiful LP. Kinda carrying on the work of the real Les Paul into the future. Black custom w/bigsby, looping tracks, flatwound strings, I like it!
He's one of my favorite composers of all time, funny that I'm a guitarist but if I could meet one of my musical idols it wouldn't necessarily be the knee-jerk Clapton, Beck, Page person but a John Barry. Thats really amazing you got to interview him, I think if Hendrixs walked in the room I'd be more calm then if Barry did. LOL!
This was lovely. The sound reminds me of Suede - possibly a particular song, though I can't recall which. There's a certain something to Suede's original guitarist (and Bigsby abuser) Bernard Butler's guitar playing, which I really, really love. (To an extent, this also holds true for R Oakes, the band's current guitarist.) You seem to be able to capture that very same "something" in your playing, which I rarely find. This was refreshing.
I'm so late to the game. Hearing this for the first time tonight. Your version of this song will stay with me for a long time. It is beautiful. Are you in EADGBE? I have to learn this. Not that I will ever be able to do it justice, but I like to have a goal.
wow, love the tune, also your playing. i watched your ther videos, man u know what is a good "interesting" tone. you are not slave to stereotypes of guitar tones. keep on. ahh again, great tune!
It's John Berry's "Theme from Midnight Cowboy." The cover version by Ferrante & Teicher was an AM radio hit at the end of the ’60s. Let me know if the patient services the operation! :)
One of The Best I have ever listened to . My Departed Dad who played Lap Steel before WW II. I am sure if he was still around he'd be smiling ! I have a Gibson Midtown Custom solidbody chambered/ F holes. I was thinking of A Bigsby B3 with a TOWNER down bar in place of the stopbar tailpiece. You are knowledgeable and your playing blows me away. I wondered if you might have an opinion on that setup ? It seems the bar applies a negative pressure behind the bridge. Any thoughts ? Thanks Joe.
Heavenly. This makes me want to put down my flat box and break out my 74 Les Paul custom an 74 Marshall super lead half stack with 6550's and kick some ass. Nicely and mellowyellowy.
Lovely playing. I'm thinking of putting one on my Les Paul. Do I spy a Trini Lopez behind you? I've got an original from around '67. You don't see many around.
Cool video, man. I have been considering slapping a bigsby on my les paul. I notice you have a strap lock near the neck. With the bigsby, we're you able to still have the strap lock on the bottom of the guitar as well. That has been my only concern. I have strap locks on my guitar and I don't want to have to stop using them.
Nice! I also wanted to have the same combo slapped on my LP freak, but then decided against it. I already have a trem guitar, so at least one should be able to take alt tunings without much trouble.
I'm looking to put one on my Epiphone SG. I cant afford the guitar I want right now and this is a compromise. Although, I've fallen in love with the idea of having that on my guitar. I'd have to get the B5 model, though, as I'm pretty sure it's the only one that'll fit, But I know its going to look just as good. I'll definitely have a unique guitar at that point.
Beautiful song, what is it, an original, thinking of putting a B7 with a Vibramate on my LP Standard, does it change the action? Give a lesson on that song, fantastic playing!!!!
sounds awesome. i could listen to that all day! i recently ordered an epiphone les paul express. do you think there would be any issues fitting it with a bigsby?
+tonefiend by joe gore thanks for getting back to me. I really wish i had looked into it a bit more before i ordered! oh well. i think i will see how the express goes and if i like the les paul style guitar then i might get something pricier with a bigsby already attached. It is a pity there arent more 3/4 size guitars around... I dont live near a guitar shop so I have either got to travel to look at the nearest one (which has a limited range) or i have got to buy online.
It says "mate." Must have misread it, even in the ads in Vintage Guitar, of which I subscribe to and read voraciously. Bigsbys are ubiquitous on guitars these days. I have a Guild Starfire 2 which does NOT have it (Westerly, 1997), as opposed to the more popular 3 & 4 which does, Can't help but wonder if they detract from tone or not. You use it musically, but I wonder if they're a plus or minus overall.
tonefiend by joe gore: cool, I have a 07 wine/gold studio that I've been kickin around thinking about doing that mid to. Thanks for the response. Cheers
So I'm curious, Joe (or peanut gallery), what's your take on tuning stability when pairing something like a Bigsby with a fixed bridge (this is assuming you haven't done any additional alterations to fix that). I always worry when one bit moves and another doesn't.
@@joe_gore I mostly ask from a physics standpoint, since that stubborn left brain of mine wants to wince when one thing moves and the other thing doesn't. I hadn't considered the impact flatwound strings would have on this, though as this is an issue I've had on nonwound strings I suppose it still applies. Thank you for your feedback!
I don't use any vibrato ever but i absolutely love the way bigsbys look so I'm thinking about purchasing one simply for the look of it.... is there a way to just have the hardware without the bar?
Not that I know of. But if you do get one, make sure it's not the fix arm so you can move it out of the way. But that's a shame that you don't use any vibrato at all, not even with your fingers on the neck? Hard to have soul without vibrato.
rapaladude I play a lot of punk rock, so I've just never had the need for it. I actually recently found a tailpiece without the bar so I'm thinking about investing in that.
Great one sir...i am thinking puting one on my guitar too...its a faber revival lp and im kinda nervous about the tunning because everyone with tremolo has the same issue.....any tips?
I'm a big fan of flat-wound aka tape-wound strings, not least because they feel very comfortable under the fingers. But they are hard to find in light gauges. What gauge and make do you use?
I use .012s or .013s. Usually Thomastik-Infeld, but I like Pyramid and Optima too. (TI is from Austria, the other two brands are German.) They also make .011 sets. Mind you, these are NOT tape sets - that's a different thing. These are nickel.
Tuning stability issues are a hard thing to avoid with any vibrato. When you loosen and stretch the strings like that, they're bound to go out of tune eventually. Try not using it as much to see if that's what's making it go out of tune quicker. If it still goes out of tune there may be another issue.
debating on adding one o these to my lp so i can do a few sleight trems on some prog metal stuff. how does this affect the tuning stability of the guitar?
WOW! Now THAT is impressive!!! If I could sit down and chew the fat over dinner with just one above all others...it would be Jerry Goldsmith. It's so so sad that all the truly greats are leaving this mortal coil and those that have filled they're vacancies don't even come close to the amazing melodic compositions those giants left behind.
So wait. You're saying that changing parts of your guitar that weren't the electronics changed the tone of the guitar? That can't be right! That one guy on here that curses a lot said so! :p This sounded great, by the way.
Gorgeous music, although somewhat disarming visually as I kept referencing Tim Roth in Pulp Fiction due to the likeness of Joe to said actor. Well played!
