34:21 I walked my bike a few blocks through a street festival that I wasnt expecting. I'm not, like, ideologically opposed to walking my bike. Any signage that asks me to walk my bike is failed urban planning, though, and I don't respect it. It's *always* because they don't want to inconvenience the vehicle right-of-way.

This was good. Thanks. That new two-way stretch on the south side of College from Bellevue to Borden you mention - it's good. If you're a north-side rider, it's good. But we need to embrace quirks like that if more cycling routes are going to work. Also, you got close to it, but when there's no room to pass, don't pass. Near Urbane, College from Spadina to about Elizabeth is a skinny, mostly closed bike-lane. Take your time people, or take the lane if you're a MAMIL who just can't even handle a safe and reasonable commuter pace.

Pass on the left! I've seen a few cyclists get side-swiped from trying to overtake a right-turning vehicle. It's also a terrible blind spot for drivers. Same with bike lanes, stay on the right unless you intend to pass another cyclist, I'm sure we've all heard the phrase "on your left".

Yep! We discuss this at 38:05!

31:15 I find that people respond best when I slow down to their speed and greet them with a friendly "Good morning!". In my head I may be thinking other words if they are walking shoulder to shoulder or being completely oblivious of their surroundings, but I don't want them to think of cyclists as jerks.

Excellent point about the crappy roads in Toronto making things difficult. I favour a mountain bike in the city, as extreme as that sounds, because it makes rough roads easier and I’ll never get my wheel stuck in a streetcar track, which is something that has happened to people I know and that sounds really scary.

I really wish these tips were just common knowledge with cyclists, using lights and knowing how to lock a bike properly so it doesn't impede anyone who's locking on the other side as well..

That's one of the reasons we wanted to sit down a chat about this - to try to get more cyclists on the same page (and not be acting like cars in the bike lane)! Locking advice would be good to cover in the future although last time I showed people on video there were many people telling me I did it "wrong" hahah :(

@@urbane-cyclist Ya we all need to try to pass this information along so we can become maybe a bit less jaded about biking in this city..

Everybody hates traffic, but only some people realize that that's all their own car ever does: create traffic.

21:15 Try Cat-Ears or make your own. Like bar mitts, they look goofy, but they WORK. I made my own with black synthetic fur and velcro.

12:24 That area along is chaos right now. So ironic to put in a protected bike intersection but offer no protection during construction.

I actually hate when other cylists are turning right (by passing me on my left) when we are at a red light. 1 - it is illegal and 2- it's annoying af because when my light is green, we can hit each other because the person doing it think she have time to make the turn. Just wait your turn to make the move, it's really that simple. Otherwise, most points are valid. Especially people going the wrong way on a bike lane. That one.... :(

I personally don't see a huge problem with the first part of what you described but it sounds to be about more specific case once you elaborated. If someone turns right if its actually a red....you don't have the right of way to continue straight/forward so it should be a non issue. But what you describe here is someone filtering or "shoaling" up to the front without time and cutting you off once you get a GREEN - yes THAT is very annoying and is very little gain for them and just adds a potential hazard/conflict to you.

19:48 Sony made some earbuds with a hole in them, the Linkbuds. They were perfect for biking. Unfortunately they cost a fortune and they're really not durable enough for athletic use. Now I play music on my phone at what I hope is a reasonable volume. I find it helps alert pedestrians that I'm around, something for which they can use the assistance.

There are bone conduction earphones called Shokz which don't cover your ears and don't bother other people trying to enjoy a quiet path. Bells work great to alert pedestrians.

People walking or jogging in the bike lane annoys me.
@keeblebrox
@keeblebrox Месяц назад
Me too. I try to redirect those feelings when they bubble up, towards all the space taken up by cars. There could be ample space for people to run on flat ground if we had more pedestrian spaces.
@urbane-cyclist
@urbane-cyclist Месяц назад
We gotta have patience knowing that there's so much space taken away from pedestrians too! But yes, you're right that we can ALL avoid conflicts by working with what we've got in a way that respects everyone else too.
