Ohhh FFS Martin, I finished sanding my primer yesterday and was going to spray basecoat today, not sure i can do it without watching this in case it's inspirational and changes my plans (new CF ebike frame, self build, going for a super wet look black gloss) So far everythings going great thanks to your videos, thank you.
Great video, love all your content but im guessing this one resonates more with your average painter! Its how i'll be painting my first frame, so to see someone as talented as yourself go back to basics is very helpful
I’m going to take this concept but flip it. I’m going to paint it this way first. Then put my stencil and then a top layer of matte black so my design is this dope color fade but also gloss design with the matte background to really make it pop
Great Work, like always! ... You motivated me to paint my bike a couple months ago. I'm considering to paint my Alu-Frame with a faded blue/green color. Most of the cans I could found require a glossy finish. But I would like to have it in matt. Can I go for it? I'll make a video u'll hopefully react to :) By the way, could u recommend a spray can for my usage? I'm considering to get the "STI-Design Flip-Flop composite GB"
Hallo Martin, der Rahmen sieht richtig nice aus :DD wäre es vielleicht möglich dass sie ein genaueres Video zum Thema Spray-Klarlack machen ? Also wie man es richtig auftragen muss, worauf man achten muss usw.
Hi man! great tutorials and vids, im about to go full on on a bike repaint and happened to have found a couple of you're video thats really helped setting things up. i need a pair of infos though, my frame is aluminum ( painted). so i'll have to strip it down first , (probably fine-sand blasting if i find someone near where a live). is the 2k primer that you've used in another video a better choice even for aluminum? i don't want any "exposed alu" part so i guessed it's more strong? also, any chance you can get me the ebay store link that set you up with the " supermeme" decals? i'm from italy and i can only find my original model in Australia and shipping is like 3x the cost of the item!! thanks ! keep it up!
I've watched & re-watched this video so many times, I'm starting to dream in color. I've painted an aluminum hard tail following your instructions & couldn't be happier. To get the same results with a steel frame, would a different primer be required?
Thank you Martin, really detailed video and perfect for me as I am about to paint my steel frame! Do you need to sand down the clear coat for metal frames or this process only apply to carbon frame?
I’ve just found your channel and absolutely love it! Thank you. A couple of questions if that’s OK. Are you sanding in between coats of primer / colour / 2K? Or is that not necessary? What temperature is your spray room at? Just thinking about curing times. My garage can be cold! Thanks again Jack
Hello my friend I wanted to know if required to wash the frame with water after sanding in both stages after sanding the primer and the paint or clean it with paper towel only ?
Hi Eto! Nice videos, a question, and if i like to leave the raw aspect aluminium in the frame and wich coat trasparent need for protect the raw aluminium.?🙋🏻♂️ Thanks in advance
Thanks. I want to do this. I changed my mind and will return the montana gold and get these paints. is one can of primer, pro red, pro yellow and 2k clear enough? dont i need to paint silver after grey primer? ie - Base Metallic Silver Coarse - Kustom Canz - Urethane basecoat? sorry my costs are balloning just stickers are $50 :( plus parts on my 1996 Rocky Mountain Hammer)
Hello I have a question do I need to wash the frame after every sanding process because to me I think it’s necessary to keep it clean but not sure please answer me
Could you please do a DIY video on how to paint over chrome? I have a bike where the chainstays, bottom bracket and some of the downtube have all been chromed - I would like to paint over them, leaving the driveside chainstay chrome exposed...
hey there, i have a question. You have an another video with aluminium bike paint job. In that video, you mention that when doing a paint job on aluminium bike, always use 2K Spray Max primer. How come you're using a primer dedicated for plastic materials in this one? Thanks for your cool videos!
Hey Martin. I know the video is a little bit older but I was wondering if you still have to use the ammonium degreaser even if you prepared/cleaned your frame with professional media blasting before or is this only important if you sanded the frame on your own? Btw your videos are awesome.
Good day all. Question i got my aluminum frame bead blasted. Should i sand it or just prime and paint ?? The frame is thats grey color after besd blasted ?
Is it worth it to get the frame sand blasted if you’re painting a non candy color? If not do I have to primer it after sanding or or color directly on the sanded whatever paint is on the frame already?
Fleisch Peitsche 🤣😂🤣😂 wow! You should have chosen a hot pink / purple candy for this 😜 But this combination is just beautiful! I love it! Mein lieblings Senf! Schöne Grüße aus Berlin!
I want to strip an older aluminium frame and then polish it to have a natural finish. After polishing the frame will I still need to degrease it before using a clear primer and then finishing with a 2k clearcoat. I would like to see you do a project like this and am sure many others would be interested as well. Love your work. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hello Martin! Beautiful job. I need some help. My bike its a alluminium frame and i want to change de color. First step, i have to remove the original color, what do you recomend to me, remove with a paste remover or by sanding? Second step, after i remove the original paint, what water sand do you recomend to sand to aplly the primer? And what water sand to sand the primer? Third step, the main color, will be yellow, but some details a want be to in black. For the result i want, i have to paint some parts in black, paste the stickers and after paint all the frame by yellow? Or to dont have color difference, i have to paint all the frame with the color of the stickers and after paint all the frame with the final color?
Do you recommend doing all paint layers including base coat in 1 session? Or can I let my primer layers fully cure first and start with colours + clear later?
Martin, greetings from Chicagoland. If you have any paint layers or decals that will remain under the clear, those will be still noticeable after the clearcoat. Do you advise any final wet sanding of clearcoat or between coats?
Forks are interesting, the lowers are magnesium so you can't just strip them then use a regular primer. I paint lowers all the time and just scuff the current finish then prime and go from there
I'm about to strip my 18 year old hardtail to paint it. Pretty much like this one, but I'm going to leave it without any branding nor stickers. I'm going with a faded yust like this one but instead of candy yellow I'm going with piano black in the back. I'm still considering weather I want or not to make my branding logos and include them. Maybe some silver for those, so I would be going with a base silver colour, then the decals, then the colour fading, removing the decals and finally a heavy coat of clear coat. I'm rhinking like 3 to 5 layers to give the paint better protection from chipping.
Great videos. You're truly an artist. Amazing work. I want to paint an aluminum frame and I think I want to fade black with fluro yellow. Which color should I start with? Fade yellow on to black or vice versa? Thanks for your inspiring videos. 💪
Hi, I haven't seen any video paintung on plastic that accepts some flex, i.e.a motorcicle covers or somthing like that. Would be cool to watch gow you would paint ir
Do you have any tips on removing the sticker from the frame without the color coming with it. I tried it before but then the color ripped of in some places. love your videos :)
Hey Martin, organizing myself for my first DYI - can spraying my alloy frame. I am struggling to find Ammonium Hydroxide 29% solution ( i am uk based) does it matter if its 28%? i can find "Ammonia Solution 25-28%" will this do the job ?
You mean the country with tons of morons leaving the European Union? Do you still have toilet paper, or is it out? I suggest to use what you can find on this Island.
According to you´r links, you used a plastic primer, is that right? I´m having trouble with my primer and are trying to find a working one. Tried Montana aluminium primer, but it did not work right, and then an etching primer, but it did not etch...
Guten Tag dir.
I hope my comment will be noticed. Can you make a video of rigid fork and rim that will suit at that color of the frame? I am building a bike and i want that color. Thank you.
Great video Martin, but a little confusing. I want a gloss black fade into bare aluminium but I think you used to say transparent aluminium primer is not available. Looks like you got a good result from adhesion promoter for plastic. This is what you linked in the description. Shall I try this too?
Hi Martin, keep the good work, amazing job. I have one question i cant find those colours from spray max, are they anodized or candy? I would like to go top quality so if possible use all products from Spray Max Thanks
While this is clearly an aluminium frame, I wonder if you could advise if you need to sand a Matt black Chinese carbon frame or if it’s ok to just prime and paint over?
Love it. Painted my own bike after watching many of your vids and it’s turned out stunning...the primer/base colour/ top colour/holographic paint all went on great...apart from the clear coat! I used the 2 coat system you have here...and tried twice...but both times got orange peel and not a smooth finish. Any tips?
Clear coat is the most difficult thing in custom painting. You need a lot of experience to do it right. That's all I can advice. Just try and practice more often.
My amateur DIY paint trick for clear coat - i put the frame under the hot afternoon sun until the frame is a bit hot, then spray the clear coat under the sun also. It minimized the orange peel effect a lot, although not as good as a professional result, but not bad for a DiY. Try it to see if it works for u
One of the main reasons it will peel or crack is that the other paint you've applied hasn't fully cured so waiting up to 48 hours than clear coat would make a difference.
how come the can that you are spraying with in the video (red) doesn't match any of the cans in your links? Is it a different brand from what you are linking?
