About two weeks after you biked the Yamanote line, my girlfriend and I walked it on the last day of our trip to Tokyo. Took us 12 hours and it was awesome. I thought it was about 42 km long... We started and finished at Ueno Station, going in the opposite direction you went in. Can't wait to visit Tokyo again.
There is nothing like coming home from a 5h car drive, after moving out of a college dorm room, and seeing a video from you two. Perfect way to relax! I'd also like to say "Sup guuuuurrrrllll"
Excellent video as always, guys! 43:48 Yes, it's the theme music to the movie "The Third Man" made in 1949, and known as "the Yebisu Beer commercial music". From one of the best movies of that genre ever made, it won the Grand Prize at the 1949 Cannes Film Festival, the British Academy Award for Best Film, and an Academy Award for Best Black and White Cinematography in 1950. It's about a writer whose friend invites him to post-WW II Vienna. The friend dies in an accident of suspicious circumstance, and the main character then sets out to find out what really happened to his friend. Definitely worth a viewing particularly by fans of mystery movies.
Just found this video a couple of days ago and today I was able to visit some of these stations on my 1st trip to Japan. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Much appreciated.
It's a little surreal to watch through old videos, then these new ones, and realize you've been making these for over 5 years. It's almost like we (the viewers) have got to watch you two grow your life together and it's really cool. I hope you're still making these in 2019.
dillon keene Wow, I never thought about how you can watch the progression of us as people via the videos, which is funny as it's so obvious. I have felt that way about some people (musicians usually, Jeff Rosenstock comes to mind) in the past and always enjoyed it, hope you enjoy that aspect of watching us! -Eric
I've only watched the first five minutes of this video and I'm already loving it! Great job showing things about Tokyo that don't normally get featured.
We really enjoyed this video, and appreciated your effort. We were in Tokyo for the first week of April. After watching this video, we felt like we were in Tokyo again since we did not have a chance to get to all stations. Again thank you so much for sharing. Always enjoy your videos. Keep up with the good work and take care.
I had lived in Tokyo over 10 years, but I didn't know some of the information you provided in this video. I never noticed the sound of some stations are different. I used live in the area Komagome, Sugamo, Otsuka, so I know them very well. Regarding the bar/drinking/restaurant areas in Kanda, Yurakucho, Shinbashi, I think these are basically similar to the "Golden-gai" in Shinjuku. Now Golden-gai is one of biggest foreign tourist attraction places, but the foreign tourists don't know these ares in Kanda, Yurakucho, Shinbashi areas.
What a wonderful view into Tokyo. You two are so good at this and it is a pleasure to view your great, sweet adventures. Keep it up. You are appreciated!
I spent the whole time watching this like "I've been there!", "I remember that!" And "Just round the corner from there is _insert rad place name_!". Thanks for the mad memory jogs, yo! 😄
Memories came running to my mind with these amazing places you visited, like Shibuya, Ikebukoru, Yurakucho. Had a great time myself there earlier this year. Keep making long videos punctuated with random madness that you guys are good at! Cheers :}
Thanks you guys for your wonderful videos. Your videos are 1 of the small enjoyments I get, and every time I see them I wish I could be there enjoying the sights and sounds(and food of course) of Japan
We were staying in a hotel near by Naria Airport three weeks ago (just one night to catch a connecting the flight next day). We walked to 7-11 that's about a mile and half away from our hotel just because you guys showed all kind of food you can get from there. They are different than what we have here in States. We were not disappointed with the dinners and snacks we got from there (yes, the lady at the counter heated the food for us). I'm really glad we didn't eat the hotel food (there is nothing wrong with it). We are from Virginia (McLean), also!
I can't express how happy I am to see this! A good part of the experience of Tokyo was seen through the Yamanote Line for me. I've always regretted not walking the entire line but one of my friends who went drinking walked a good 2/3 of the line when the line went down and he said it was a very enjoyable experience. And I can confirm that I've never waited more than two minutes for a train and the other awesome part, it doesn't matter which direction you take, you'll eventually get there! Have you been to the zoo at Ueno? Saw a rhino have the most epic pee ever. I'm just blabbing now lol. I can't express how much I LOVE this video!! Thanks for sharing!!
I think this is my fave video from you guys so far. I've used the Yamanote line since my first trip to Japan and have visited many of the stations you guys showed. I stayed near Ueno station last March on my vacation and love the area. I agree with Eric's description of "good gritty". BTW, your mystery building is the NTT Docomo Building. Love its look too.
I was expecting sweat, blood and tears at the end of this video, but I guess making a brief stop at every station helped in a way! That little adventure seem so fun I would like to try it some day!
I will take the 5 minute and 2 minute wait time anyday over the MBTA here in Boston. Still amazes me how fast and efficient public transportation in Japan is. Their schedule are accurate. Each station looks unique and lol the duck butt in the hut.
I think I've finally watched all the videos ! Achievement unlocked! Sad though because I love these vids. Feel like you guys are good friends after spending all these "virtual" hours together lol. Keep up the great videos guys.
Jeremyy Ryann Haha, you watched them ALL? That's crazy! Now I need to make more! -Eric

That was awesome. Definitely one of my favorite videos so far ! Doing that is on my TODO list someday, great idea. I loved how you guys manage to give interesting facts on each station. And regarding the big nameless building, I had exactly the same thought when we walked past it.
What a great video!! We live in Atlanta but my wife is from Tokyo and I have rode the Yamanote line countless times in the last ten years!! Funny we were married in a Temple off of the Osaki Station that had no sign LOL!! That station is very special to my wife and I!! Keep the great videos coming. I will also support your Paetreon page as well!! I really enjoy you guys and the next time my wife and I are in Tokyo visiting family would love to take you guys out for dinner!! Take Care and keep the videos Coming!!
Kyde and Eric LOL!! As many times as I've been there I didn't notice!! I just know where to get off and didn't pay attention to the signs!! My wife said she never paid attention to that either!! LOL!! That's why you guys are there and we watch!! Thanks for the response!! Dinner is still on us!!
Well done. Your next challenge is the walk the full length of the Tokaido Highway.... Looking forward to that video. BTW, that tramline is from memory the only tramline left in Tokyo. You can see more extensive networks in places like Hiroshima and Kyoto.
I really enjoyed this. The Yamanote Line is a favourite of mine. I had hoped you'd show more of the places BETWEEN the stations. Maybe that's another video.
Your channel has been more binge-able than "Friday Night Lights" and is funnier than "Making a Murderer." The past few weeks I have been up way past my bedtime, laughing at Eric getting ice cream brainfreeze, and crying when Kyde sees Kumamon. I will be going to Japan in March for a couple weeks and your Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo videos have provided me with more useful information than any top ten list or guidebook could ever provide. I loved this video because I'll be staying near Shinjuku station and pretty much have a good idea of how to navigate where I want to go in the city now. Thanks! I just pledged to your Patreon today and hope you continue to be inspired to eat and adventure!
+Andy Chang Hi Andy! Thanks so much for the kind words! I love that you have enjoyed our videos so much, and doubly love you have found them actually helpful in planning your own adventure to Japan! Also, thanks a lot for becoming a patron of ours! That helps us immensely and is a huge part of the reason we are able to keep making videos! By the way, this document we have might also help a bit in finding some things to do, especially in Tokyo. docs.google.com/document/d/1DOUoFuDJ9I7hTIUCFkyAdnY_Q2jvZ-c84bezj8PyuPU/edit -Eric
+Farin Lindley Haha, glad you are enjoying so many of our videos! That'S wonderful to hear. We wrote that document together...but I'm OK with her voice being the one you heard! Haha. -E
We've just learnt hiragana so we are trying to translate all of the signs in the vid. When we got to the sugamo bit we were like 'oshiri?!! that can't be right' lol then we listened to erics explanation haha love it!!
Thank you for the great video! For example, you have another small "streetcar" tram between Kyoudou (Setagayaku-Akadutumi) and Shimotakaido, very old like, a 1950's tram, slow, nice.
Thanks for your great video! I don't know if anyone else did the same thing before, but you made the best work. I am enjoying your bike trip a lot. By the way, that bear and panda drawn by the elder are amazing!
The descriptive vignettes are really useful for understanding (a little bit) the neighborhoods in which the stations are located. The tower at Yoyogi Eki is Docomo Tower (a wireless provider), but you probably already know that by now. It is modeled on the Empire State Building, but not a clone.
Enjoyed your RU-vid video, my husband has been to Nagoya to visit his son (been in Nagoya 10 years) good base to explore Japan, safest country to visit, Respect is part of Japanese culture, low crime rate etc., reasonably short trip from Brisbane, Australia ! ! !
Amazing video! I watched the whole thing haha, but now they are building a 30th station on the Yamanote line, hopefully you'll also make a video about it! :D
I love trains! And wow, that duck mascot has got to be the strangest and cutest thing ever. I wish we'd do more fun things like that in the U.S.! I think it would make everyone's daily commute a bit more pleasant!
Amazing post, really enjoyable! Thanks for your hard work guys! Next time you are near Nippori eki check out Yanaka, lovely big cemetery area and lots of little temples/shrines and old buildings (it managed to escape a lot of firebombing during the war)
I wish I had known you guys were so close to otsuka station when I was there. I stayed in the manga cafe just off to your right (video right) and ate some onigiri for breakfast when there was an earthquake while I was hungover. Cheers.
Loved this video... I just can't get enough of ur videos and u two.. Love seeing all the travel videos that u have posted . Also how many countries have u guys been too 😊
i thoroughly enjoyed our bike ride thru the 20'ish miles of the yamanote line guyz!! Thanks!! ALWAYS great fun exploring the sites, sounds, scenes, foods, history and ambience of what your "home city" has to offer....great delight swaggering with ya as ALWAYS !! ....... though my butt & knees do feel a bit achy, maybe next time imma opt for a mountain bike with bigger wheels and comfier seats ;-).
oh really?? i thought you and kyde get to biking often as i remember you guys rode more in your early years teaching and living in japan....i remember kyde had to borrow a coworkers bike as you saw her off on her first day at work and you went and bought an unfolding bike as you cruised around town.....but i guess you guys have progressed to the JR rail and car rentals to get about most of tokyo......
I've really been enjoying like all these videos, they are nice to just watch! The brief second of Akihabara made me so jealous. I wanna go there so badly! Anyways I love these videos, Keep it up!
Duck butt station!!! Aww! I can imagine walking home from the station after a long, bad day, and passing this cute mascot's butt, and WAHBAM! Can't be sad anymore!
Rewatching this video after knowing you guys got sick after riding around Biwa. At 1:04:00 when you ask Kyde how she feels after a day of bike riding, she says she feels slightly ill. Probably a coincidence but it felt like foreshadowing
I was at one or two of those places during my week in Japan (2015? let's see= that makes it 22 years ago this summer). Amazing place! I'll have to remember Eric's Shoe Stop, started with a 5 character. By the way, I just got a new 3 mil full wetsuit, turns out 5XL fit me pretty well (6'7"+ and around 290'ish. -from seavenger- just in case ya'll start playing in the ocean more/ although over there you may be able to get a custom one more affordably than here.
Don't know if it's been mentioned already but there's a marathon going on called the Yamathon in May! It's a charity walk/run where you go through every station on the Yamanote line and all the proceeds go towards the Tohaku Earthquake victims. I'm gonna be volunteering there while I'm visiting Tokyo for a month and thought you'd be interested!
Havent even had my first cup of coffee and I've already seen Eric squishing a giant duck butt in the giant duck butt hut and watched yall eat weird snot spider webs. I liiive for your guys' adventures. Also it's really cool you post longer videos, thanks a lot for all your work 32:28 Eric we need to talk about your obsession with bits lol my goodness
May I give you guys a tip on video editing? Try not to abuse the "fades to black" when you are closing a topic like a station its okay, but when is just a fast take like the giant ball (hahaha) you just go with a simpler/faster cut! And this video was amazing! I'm considering writing a book about the Yamanote line from both historical and from a more touristically perspective as well. As a final note... The best couple j-logging on RU-vid!
I know what you mean about the editing, but I sometimes like to intentionally place cut styles where they don't belong to make pacing less obvious. I just go with my gut instinct, I'm not trying to make things "by the book" perfect. Glad you like the video by the way, a book on the Yamanote line is a fantastic idea! -Eric
Japan = Trains arrive every two-to-five minutes on time and are super fast. UK = Trains are ALWAYS late or delayed, slow, and if say a signal glitches out, the entire thing is cancelled or delayed by two hours. Fun, fun, fun.
Just catching up on your vids now guys !!!!! We were in Ginza , asakusa , uneo , shinjuku just few days ago !!!! P,s I can eat most things in Japan just natto smell gets me all the time !!!!!
As you rode all the way around Yamanote Line, it would have been better to introduce each station as the terminal for which bound. For example, Nippori & Ueno are for less expensive Narita Airport Sky-liner, Ueno & Tokyo are for Tohoku, Joetsu & Hokuriku Shinkansen, Tokyo & Shinagawa are for Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku & Ikebukuro are for Narita Airport Express, Shinagawa is for less expensive Haneda Airport Keikyu Line, Shinjuku is for Hakone, Mt.Fuji & Takao-san and Ikebukuro & Ueno are for Nikko.
Narcisa Eral I am replying on behalf of the poster. You would stay in Shinjuku probably or Shibuya possibly. If you arrive at Narita Airport, take Narita Express because it's easier. And if you have to transfer to Yamanote Line, take Keisei Sky Liner because it's less expensive. If you arrive at Haneda Airport, take Keikyuu Line except the case you rarely stay in Hamamatsucho because it's less expensive and easier to transfer to Yamanote Line and subway.
