Bikepacking the Empire State Trail from Albany, NY, to New York City, NY. This trip was taken over 4 days during the 4th of July weekend of 2022.
After setting out from Albany, we stayed overnight in Germantown, New Paltz, and Ridgefield.
This is a great trail network, and definitely worth the trip!

I am planning to do this trip, and this is the best video I've seen of it yet! Great soundtrack as well!

Thank you! It’s a great trip. Just make sure to really figure out the accommodations in advance, that’s the toughest part of this tour in my opinion

The Empire State Trail is a gem. I've done the Erie Canal part and the NYC-Albany stretch all the way from NYC to Kingston, will be closing the Albany-Kingston gap this summer. I have the Rousse Point stretch on my bucket list. Great to see you enjoyed it! Very well done video!

Geez... I would have appreciated it if you guys had hung around and helped me remove that downed tree at 6:15 instead of just climbing through it. That's okay... the 9 guys touring north that came through when I started clearing it didn't help either. 😉 I got the tree at 6:35 too. BTW, the big washout south of Breezy Hill (before the trestle) is fixed too! That was a bad storm...

This is my route next week. Planning to do it in three days. Did you stay overnight in Kingston, any campgrounds there? Thanks for the preview. Posting my video after my ride. 👍

Good luck! Didn’t stay in Kingston, but it’s a moderate sized town so there’s definitely a chance of campsites. Will say that campsites were unfortunately sparse along the route. Great besides that.

@@Liston611 I see that after Kingston is Creekview Campground I try to get there. It's gonna be a long ride but I can do it if the weather and wind direction is in my favor. I rode the Erie Canal Trail last month from Buffalo to Albany now trying to finish the entire Empire State. Trial.

Any tips on camping along that route?

Honestly that was probably the most difficult part of the trip. We stayed at a hipcamp, which imo was overpriced ($90). We got lucky in Germantown since the BNB was full and a townsperson let us stay in their back yard. For the last night we stayed with a warmshowers host, which was incredible and free, but we had to detour to Connecticut which added a lot of elevation. Hopefully as the trail develops there will be more places to stay that pop up. As of now it’s still pretty fresh and there isn’t much built up to specifically cater to bike tourists

I’m gonna do Albany to Buffalo and back . Any insights to share?

For this trip we only went North-> South, so didn’t do any of the section that goes out towards Buffalo. Did run into some travelers that came from that way though, and they said it was cool to see the canal.
