The John Muir Way is a great beginners bikepacking route. In this film I talk you through the bike and kit I used for cycling the route. If you have any detailed questions, please leave a comment below and I will try to answer your questions as good as I can.
More about the route can be found at www.bikepackingscotland.com/jo... or www.johnmuirway.org

Hey Roos, this is great to hear, thank you for the feedback! I am just working on a series of shorter films for day trips on the route too.

What a great video Markus, I have been making some too but they're nowhere near as good as this. Your film is inspiring and has given me something to strive towards. Thanks for making that.

Really nice video. I never did tubeless but my rims are tubeless ready so I think I should try something new for the next trip.

I think you should. I have cycled the Atlas and Silk Road Mountain Races tubeless, and would not go back honestly.

Great video, thanks Markus. Really helpful. Do you wear regular shoes and have flat pedals? I ride with SPDs normally, but that means taking an alternative shoe for off bike. Not sure if that's a good solution for bikepack! Also, how do you keep your bike secure, when in shops etc, if you're riding solo? Thanks

Hi Steven, I use the Giro Rumble and now DMR V-Twin pedals. The rumble is fine for walking as well, but a bit softer, so those pedals are great to compensate that, and also fine to ride with normal shoes if needed. For security, I just leave it outside. Small shops are better, or small villages, never had a problem so far.

Great video, I have the same bike, though my frame is smaller, so I’m not sure the frame bag would fit.

There is a smaller version of the Apidura Race frame bag too, which should smaller frames. Less storage space, it might be worthwhile utilising the fork as well, their fork bags are pretty handy too.

Not sure if this helps 2 months later, but on the Apidura website under each frame bag type there’s a chart where you can check what is compatible with each major brand model and size. 51cm Tripster frame owner here, the 3l frame bag fits, as does the 6l full frame one.

Tip: create an affiliate with an online seller (amazon?) and link to the products. Might help you financially.

Not Amazon out of ethical reasons. But looking into other ideas, which are more local.

How did you get on with the tent & sleeping bag?
@reizkultur
@reizkultur 3 года назад
I really liked them. The next is not cheap, but packs very small, which is an advantage. In terms of value for money the sleeping bag is really good, as it packs small, and is warm enough so far. I will test it next week in Germany too.

Lezyne Macro C - I don't understand why this is a good thing to take when it needs to be paired with a phone, as the phone has a GPS and can give you turn by turn navigation? What am I missing?
@reizkultur
@reizkultur 3 года назад
Hi Robert, I simply don't like mounting a phone on handlebar, and also to use it for navigation. The Mega C app connects to Komoot, so I can follow the route on the GPS, and put my phone on airplane mode or use it for filming. And it's good to have two devices, as one might either run out of battery or have other issues. While I don't think a paper map is essential any longer these days, having a backup is good.

@@reizkultur Thanks for replying Markus, I used Komoot the other day after seeing your recommendation and it was great. Gonna ride from Leith to the Pentlands and back tomorrow using it again. Keep the videos coming they're inspiring and very useful! (Also thinking of buying a Kinesis)

So what about doing this on a hardtail, emtb?

Loads of fun as well. You'll very much enjoy the downhill from Gauk Hill I would say. And if you want, possibly take a few detours as well, I would highly recommend the MTB trails in Callendar Wood in Falkirk.

Script on screen goes by to quickly, there were only brief flashes of the bike, I would rather see the bike and scenery than the speakers face, we know what he looks like already. I have enjoyed this guy's videos for a long time, but it's always a struggle to understand him and difficult to read the screen.

Hi Frank, thanks for the feedback. Feedback taken on board, I normally subtitle the films for that reason, in English and German, but didn't do this one. Good ideas for future films, thanks!
