l live and work in Boston. Spending most of your time in the city can really provoke a burning desire for true nature. I also love bike adventures, so I found one of the best ones in the world. The North Coast 500 of the Scottish Highlands. The NC500 covers the entire perimeter of the Scottish Highlands , beginning and ending in Inverness. So I crossed the pond, rented a bike, strapped all my camping gear and everything else to the racks and set out to conquer this breathtaking ride. It was the most beautiful and brutal experience of my life. Here is my documentation of the journey. I hope you join me and feel inspired to head out on your own epic adventure!

I have taken up longer day rides along the north norwegian coast, where i reside. Lonely and haunting to be riding along those roads at times, but unbelievably breathtaking (for referance, im south african). I have often wondered about scotland, because i think that region does have something incomparably special about it.

Great to see someone without a helmet and on an appropriate bike with flat bars. You had it lucky with the weather on the Bealach nam Ba - (pronounced Bee-al-ach nam Baah) even if you have the muscles the wind can blow you off the road. Glad you enjoyed Scotland, it is cycling heaven if you choose the right roads.

Great video and some fantastic memories (I cycled the NC500 in June 2023). A note to others watching this and who are thinking about cycling the route, some of the shots in this video are out of sync (for example there are views of Suilven and a chat with the hiker at Kylesku before the filming in and from Ullapool, but you go through Ullapool before heading north towards Lochinver and Kylesku). But it is a great representation of the route. I am from the Highlands (Inverness) although I live in Yorkshire now and, although I know the area well, it was still an amazing experience and everything you come across (the people, the places, the weather, the scenery) contributes to an adventure you will never forget. One other point to note, food and drink stops can be few and far between in places so make sure you do your research and plan where you will stop for a coffee and for food before you go (and check days and opening times as these vary throughout the season).But just do it!!

Thank you Ross! Yes this adventure goes down as the best experience of my life so far. What an extraordinary place in the world. I truly loved meeting so many friendly people in the Highlands. Richard the hiker, I talk to all the time still. And great advice about the food! I did not realise how few and far between food opportunities would be. I quickly learned after a very hungry night at Gruinard Bay, where I was out of food and there was no where to get any. That was rough after riding in the rain for several hours. But I fell in love with the Highlands and I can't wait to visit again. Thanks for watching, cheers mate 😊

If you ever come back to Scotland you should do the Hebridean Way. All the Hebridean islands plus could go see the Isle of Skye. Beautiful beaches, especially on Isle of Lewis/Harris. Best to start North to South I reckon. Can get ferry to Stornoway from Ullapool, then travel up to Northern most point (Butt of Lewis lighthouse) then travel south. Make sure you visit Luskentyre beach on Harris when the tide is out 😍

Your opening video shots, sucked me into this and then I stayed the full course. Welcome to the UK and Scotland in particular, and since I live in England I have also travelled up to Scotland and the outer islands quite a few times. And it is incredibly beautiful that road up and over to Applecross is quite amazing. So massive. Congratulations for having cycled the whole route.

Great video and soundtrack, your Scottish accent isn’t too bad either. 😂 There is now a new NC500 cycle route which avoids the A9 you’ll be pleased to know, I hope to try it next Spring.

I had a lot of time to practice that accent over the course of the ride! After about day 6 I started talking to myself quite a bit, mostly in a Scottish accent😂 wise man you are finding an alternative to the A9. What roads are you going to take??

Congratulations Oak you did it. I've ridden most of it but on a motorcycle so I do know how tough it is in places. You certainly didn't make it easier for yourself on that bike with straight handlebars. Glad the weather was with you unlike when we went to your home town on a coach tour for a day. We had torrential rain all day and just managed to have a walk around the Tea Ship Museum. Shame as it looks a great city. As much as I like the UK & Scotland you should think about cycling in France as its made for cycling & motorcycling. Stay safe out there.
@OakElliott
@OakElliott Год назад
Thank you so much! Funny you should mention France, I have that high on my list for next destination rides. Believe me, it rained, alot on this trip. Just didn't film most of it. Was constantly on the side of the road changing in and out of rain gear. Too bad to hear you had nasty weather in Boston! It is definitely a magical city to explore in good weather. Thanks for the comment. Cheers !

I thoroughly enjoyed that and well done to you for fighting through to the end. I actually live on the NC500 (in Caithness) and I would endorse your views on the A9 north of Inverness. To add to all the NC500 cyclists and hikers we also see a lot of others doing the John O'Groats to Lands End (far south of England) thing. During my many trips up and down that road I genuinely fear for the safety of the walkers and cyclists. The road can be narrow, twisty, hilly, busy and fast so if anyone is thinking of travelling up or down the A9 on foot or on a bike please get the best hi-vis gear you can afford and use lights on your bike at all times. I also think it's important to emphasise just how long and steep some of the hills along the route of the NC500 can be. It is not uncommon to encounter gradients of over 15% and that last for a mile or so. It takes 90 seconds to go down the other side and then you are faced with another monster climb before you have had time to recover fully. Oh, and I really loved how you put your video together.
@OakElliott
@OakElliott Год назад
Thank you for the kind comments and glad you found the video enjoyable! And yes your spot on about the long steep hills. They just don't stop coming. I trained for an entire summer to gain endurance for this ride. And good thing I did, cause I would not have been able to conquer those hills otherwise. Cheers and thanks for watching!

What road would you recommend if not the A9 to get from JOG to Inverness by bicycle?
@yesemitesam333
@yesemitesam333 10 месяцев назад
@@bernieraverty4319 That's the problem: for most of the route there is no alternative. All north/southbound traffic follows the same route and not all drivers are as considerate as they should be. A hi-viz jacket; always using lights and keeping your wits about you at all times is essential.

Thank you mate! I was quite envious of you motorcycle riders at some points😂 I Only used 2 cameras, a Gopromax, and a DJI Mini 2. Although the Gopromax is sort of like 2 cameras in one, because you can shoot in regular mode and 360°. An amazing little camera it is!

Great video….can I ask you are those narrow roads two way direction? If so did you need to pull over each time a vehicle came the opposite direction?Also just a suggestion would recommend using a tail light if you are going to wear all grey….good luck with future trips.
@OakElliott

@OakElliott
@OakElliott Год назад
Thank you Tony! I had good weather and lots of rain each day. I should have filmed more when it was raining to show the reality. Just never felt like pulling the camera out in the downpours. I did see an alternate route to the A9 that looked much more appealing, but it would have added too much time and thrown me off schedule. In hindsight, should have taken it anyway, cause the A9 was terrifying 😂 cheers mate!

@@OakElliott ah ok, I assumed that you were lucky with the weather! Yes, the dreaded A9 😭, I don't even like driving it! For a section of it there's a cycle path below the other side of the road but it's easy to miss. Cheers mate 👍 Cheers

Well done man! I am having my NC500 bikepacking adventure in 2 weeks! Now also considering taking cameras with me and a speaker :D Any tips/advice on route or things you didn't take but wished you had during the trip?
@OakElliott
@OakElliott Год назад
George thank you man!! So, definitely bring a speaker. Earbuds dilute the experience and ya gotta have those tunes to keep ya going! You'll want midge spray and maybe a midge net for your face. Those bugs are vicious at morning and night. Also , be aware the stores in these little villages often close at 5. So if you're rolling into town after that looking for food supplies you may be out of luck. I made that mistake and had one very hungry evening. Make sure you have good rain gear. You will be riding in the rain ALOT and rain covers for your shoes. And biggest advice I can give you, is find an alternate for the last leg of the trip heading from Jon Ogroats down south on the east coast. Even if it adds more distance and hills. Don't ride the A9. It is a big busy highway that no one should ever cycle on. It was the scariest thing I've ever done, and it's just so dangerous and stressful. Stay in the nature routes! Good luck man, have fun!

NC 500 does include some of the best bits, but there are even better 500 mile rides to be found in the Scottish Highlands.Especially now the NC500 is so busy.. Cattle grids? Don't be such a wimp, just ride them without slowing.

@OakElliott
@OakElliott Год назад
Hi thanks for watching! So yes I definitely have some tips. Make sure to have midge spray and midge net for your face. Those little flies are brutal at dawn and dusk. If you're restocking food supplies daily , make sure you get to the town you're staying in before 5PM . Most stores in these small villages close at 5. Have high quality rain gear too. It will certainly rain often, probably daily. Biggest advice is , don't ride the A9 highway. Far too dangerous. Find an alternate route. Safe travels and have a fantastic trip to this magical place!
