That's B.C. in a nutshell, beauty and destruction. I always come away from a trip there with greater appreciation for nature.

you can search rail trails features on AllTrails app and website. I've had limited success when combined with google maps satellite view and hours of trial and error. But it's worth it. If you're serious about it let's share our alltrails or you have other methods or repository of rail trails / pipeline trails

Alltrails is kind of a mess imo, good granular detail for small trails but not a good place for high level details and planning information for longer trails and routes. I usually find a KML file or other gps track and pull it into offline maps on android, and then download whatever layers are most useful (usfs topos are great out west in the states, osm hike and bike & outdoor layers are generally useful too). Locus Map Pro also has a good elevation layer for getting a sense about topography, and some different mapping options. I'm usually on foot for most of my trips, so there's often a specific app for navigation like Guthook also. I haven't been on the Kettle Valley out there, but I would have assumed navigation was fairly straightforward.

@@davidsixtwo thanks for the tip AllTrails really is a mess. But I never paid a penny. I'll try Gaia which a Vermonter told me about. It connects to the same map that Locus is using and seems to be less euro-focused. It seems it will cost me tons.. The other stuff you mentionned seems to be for touristy areas or a very limited list of curated trails which is much more restrained than AllTrails so I'm confused or I misunderstand. I'm more of an explorer and trailblazer so I need the old overgrown trails and private roads

@@captainLoknar Gaia is fine, I just don't find their basic map layer to be very detailed. I think they're popular because they were one of the first to market on the iPhone. The free locus map has most of the features of the pro version. I'm not sure how coverage is in Canada but I also have a lot of success with Avenza Maps, they bring in layers that aren't attached to gps/navigation anywhere else, but you do have to pay for some of the data. You're right that guthook is for specific trails and not a general mapping app.

@@davidsixtwo Gaia free topo has nice terrain colors. I can identify restricted areas like the military base nearby - which Free Locus Map doesn't. Not that it matters I'm gonna break in anyway but still good to know I need to dodge bullets. Locus did not show 90% of the trails I'm aware of, either. Basically if there isn't a public park or a google defined road, these apps free versions don't have it. I wonder if the paid versions are better and how can I know. The only reason they are better than just using google is the topography, terrain type - but they are inferior with the satellite pictures so it's a bummer. You know, in a way this makes me kinda glad - so that most people will have no idea there's a trail in that forest and I'm truly alone apart from wildlife (and some hunters). Yeah Alltrails sucks guys don't bother even trying it!
