The Carretera Austral runs for 1,240 kilometers (770 mi) passing through rural Patagonia. Because of the incredible scenery it is widely regarded as one of the the world's best roadtrips. It is also on the short list of places to ride for nearly every avid cyclist. A system of ferry crossings early in the route help to bunch people up traveling by bicycle and naturally "cyclist gangs" are formed. Our small group was nicknamed the "Dulce de Leche" crew. A reference to the sweet carmel syrup available in many of the small stores along the way. I would also run into friends Drew and Maggie from Minnesota as they did a trip southbound on the Carretera.
