I've been in southeast Michigan for decades, and go into Detroit about every other month. It's really been in the last 5 to 10 years that Detroit has really been pushed towards revitalization. There's been a lot done to take care of the urban blight especially in the Downtown area. Belle Isle, for example, was basically abandoned 15 years ago, and has now become a highlight of the city once again.
There's also an abandoned velodrome on the east side of Detroit at Eight Mile Rd, Mound Rd and Outer Drive. Abandoned around the 70s. Used again about 5-10 years ago for mini bikes. I visit it every few years but it's not used by many, cracked, overgrown and outdoors. I enjoy it 😊 Love biking and Detroit!
Welcome to Detroit. LOVE RIDING IN DETROIT! I’ve been riding in Detroit for 13 years now. I’ve personally witnessed it coming back to life. There so much to see by two wheels. There’s so many group rides that go on all the time. Please come back & adventure more by bike.
I live in Windsor (just across that bridge there, in Canada) and I've done several night rides and even some cyclocross events in Fort Henry and the Detroit Invitational CX at Doris Park, which has an old cement velodrome. Great time over there and lots of development going on around the downtown. Glad you had a great time and thanks for shining some light on the scene around here.
4 generations of Detroit in my family, but I was raised on the west side of the state. I love bringing my bike to Detroit and whipping around with friends. Some of the neighborhoods are fascinating and the art scene is inventive and vast. Some of the rougher roads and areas of construction are avoidable with a lot of new bike infrastructure. Great video!
Sitting here like, "That's a pretty fixie. That dock looks familiar." Cuts to the boat house behind. Was just there last night, wading in the fog covered lake. Now as I look to move to Detroit, I find this, to learn of the area's bike stuff.
Great job man. I've been to Detroit a few times because I have family there. Unfortunately non of them ride, so they didn't know of any dedicated bike paths. Next time I'm there I will definitely go for a ride in and around the city of Livonia.
i like a lot that you're going to different cities and biking in them and telling us how biking there is because im looking around for a city to move to
I ride in the city every week -- sometimes more than once/week. Just did a ride that started in the middle of the night and ended near Belle Isle on the RiverWalk watching the sun come up. There were about 25 of us that one. The Joe Louis Greenway was dedicated last October, and eventually it will encircle the city -- hooking up to other trails already in existence. The Southwest Greenway was just dedicated hooking up the River Walk to the Michigan Central Train Station in southwest Detroit. Biking in Detroit is my favorite thing to do. And yes, there are an abundance of trails too -- out in the suburbs. I ride those too. Biking is just a wonderful thing.
We're doing the Tour de Troit in September '23 and would really like information on riding and what to do outside of the architecture and historic sites. It would be great to find a city bike map if there is one. We live in Indy and have biked NYC, Cincinatti, and various rail-trails, as well as Eurovelos. It is such a great way to explore and experience the places to visit.
I live just North of Detroit. Macomb Orchard trail is awesome, the smell of all the orchards and fruit farms is amazing. I work close to the start of Hines drive and am buying a used Wabi this weekend to leave my State at work. Can't wait to ride when i get off everyday!
@@miatomi Nah that can't be it. We have to assume that Zach is making videos just for us and when he doesn't we hate on him for not catering to our narrow view. How dare he think that people might want a video on a different subject! Silly Zach.
I've lived in detroit for about 5 or 6 years now, and I've been a bike commuter for 3 of them. It's know as the motor city, but it can be an amaing city for biking aswell. The dequindre cut to river front ride ride is one that I would recommend to anyone visiting. You can take it all the way to belle isle for a longer, more scenic route. It has its challenges like any other city, but the people here are (for the most part) incredibly warm and welcoming. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
So glad people are speaking the truth Detroit’s image. I’m not from there or anything, but having your home city being trashed constantly has to be aggravating. The people that care are putting their best foot forward to improve the city and it’s a great thing to see.
I'm going to miss Detroit, I've made a lot of friends in the area over the last 4 years. But I'm moving to Delaware this week, and it's going to be interesting to explore and learn about.
I go to school in midtown Detroit. It’s fine. If you don’t like hills, you’ll be fine here; but it leaves a lot to desire if you like climbing - but that’s just what comes with being far from any mountain ranges. Oh yeah and it’s cold. 6/10 personally, objectively a 7-8/10
Fyi kenosha wi has a velodrome just north of Chicago, and i figured ild point out while your in Midwest theee is a island called Mackinac Island, its a small car free city and state park , horses and bicycles only
It’s really crazy. Even people in Michigan perpetuate the horror of Detroit. It’s a nice place to hangout just have to keep your head in a swivel just like every city.
I lived in Michigan for 21 years and want to move back if possible I will be taking my trek with me It's nice to hear things are getting better but the covid destroyed most of the different music festivals and ruined the Detroit I used to love to visit Maybe cycling w1will revive the city
If you move to Detroit, I recommend living in a suburb outside of the city. I lived in the city for a few years and it’s not fun. Plus, there is an extra 4% income tax just for living in the city. Trust me, I had the same idea when I moved downtown, like “oh I love the city, I should move downtown!” No. Just no. There isn’t an affordable grocery store within 12 miles of the city and the city services are horrible. I remember I heard gunshots near my place and called the cops and they sent me to voicemail. Believe me, you will regret it.
FAKE NEWS. 😅 I lived in Midtown Detroit for years while going to Wayne State University and also while working for GM and LOVED it! All of my coworkers at GM also loved living in the city. I never had to drive and if there was ever a problem where i lived, i could call Wayne State Police on speed dial and they would be there in under 60 seconds no joke. You must have lived straight up in the hood 😂 Lastly, all of the art music and culture is in Detroit. There aint nothing in the suburbs except strip malls, bad food and forgettable architecture.
@@GEN_X_ I actually lived in New center, right up the street from Wayne state. And yeah, if you’re living in your little bubbles of Wayne state and GM, I can see how you were coddled to the point that you had a better experience, but that’s not the case for the majority. Also, if you think there is something funny about people that live in the hood, you should check yourself. They are just as human as you. And lastly, you’re also wrong about the suburbs, that’s how I know you were just in a bubble in Detroit. From Pontiac up to Ferndale, all the way down to Dearborn and beyond, there is a lot of culture that you have missed out on because you put your blinders up. Don’t be so quick to judge people that you don’t know.
@@michaelslifecycle If you lived in New Center than you are blatantly lying as the Headquarters for the Wayne State Police Department is literally in the New Center district along with parts of Wayne States campus so that's your lack of education on calling the Detroit Police instead of the Wayne State Police. Weird how you didn't know that... Also Junior, I finished at Wayne State in 2004 when it was actually hardcore to live in midtown and actually dangerous to walk down Cass. But you were probably in diapers then so you wouldnt even know. LMAO. And yeah i do think its funny for some suburbanite to think he's living in rough areas of Detroit when really its not bad at all. 🤣 Pontiac is boring and ghetto, Ferndale is overrated and basic, Dearborn has nothing at all going on except a movie drive in, middle eastern food and Greenfield village.. not much. Ive clearly lived in much more areas of Detroit than you and my family his lived in Metro Detroit since 1830 and helped build the city so try again.
