President Rodrigo Roa Duterte held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 25th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) in Da Nang City, Vietnam.
This is the second meeting between the two leaders since President Duterte cut short his visit to Russia last May 2017 to attend to the Marawi crisis.
In his remarks, President Putin said that he is honored to see the Philippine Chief Executive again and said that terrorism is one of the common problems between the two countries. As such, Russia is ready to provide military and technical assistance to the Philippines. He also mentioned the need to improve economic ties since the figures are still low.
For his part, President Duterte conveyed his gratitude to the Russian leader for seeing him once again, and for understanding his reason in cutting short his previous visit to Russia in order to declare martial law and quell terrorism in Marawi. He emphasized that the recent liberation of the war-torn city proved that the Philippine military and police could accomplish such a task.
The President also expressed his appreciation to President Putin for Russia’s timely military assistance at the height of the Marawi conflict since the government troops’ supplies were running low. He noted the accuracy of Russian military equipment that neutralized the enemy snipers.
From the bilateral meeting, the two leaders proceeded to the Welcome Ceremony for the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Dialogue with APEC Leaders.
