Billionaire investor Bill Ackman just issued a warning about the future of inflation. But don’t worry, it’s not all bad news, and you will see why during this video. For background, Ackman recently gave a rare, full length, sit down interview. While this interview touched on a wide range of topics, it was Ackman’s comments around inflation that really caught my attention. You are going to want to hear what he had to say. In this video, we are going to cover Ackman’s thoughts on the economy, why inflation is here to stay, and arguably most importantly, how you can protect your money from the devastating impacts of high inflation. Let’s get into it.
In order to prevent the US from slipping into deflation, the US federal reserve established a target annual inflation rate of 2% in the year 2012. For much of the next 8 years, the Fed struggled to get inflation up to that 2% target. As a result, many economists believed that inflation would never again be a problem in the United States. Oh boy how things can change and they definitely changed in a major way in 2020.
To understand why Ackman thinks inflation is here to stay, you have to understand why inflation occurs. In simple terms, inflation happens when the demand for goods or services outstrips supply. While that may sound like a complicated concept, trust me, it’s actually very simple. Here, we have a supply and demand graph. This line here represents the demand for a particular good or service
In this example, let’s say we are talking about used cars. The demand line represents the number of people looking to purchase a used car, and importantly, how much those buyers are willing and able to pay. Here, we have the supply line. This supply line represents the number of used cars available to be purchased at any given time. The point at which our two lines here cross represents the price for that good or service. So in our example, the average price of a used vehicle.
In 2020 and 2021, the US government and Federal reserve took drastic steps to prevent a widespread economic collapse. This involved sending cash directly to households, boosting unemployment benefits, and pausing required payments on certain types of debt. At the same time that all of this cash was getting pumped into the economy, the Federal reserve slashed interest rates to historically low levels. These lower interest rates made it less expensive for people and businesses to borrow money to make purchases.
Going back to our example with used cars, these actions resulted in an increase in demand for used cars. People had more money in their bank accounts to be able to spend to make the purchase. Additionally, the lower rates made it less expensive to purchase a car using a loan. These factors led to an increase in demand, illustrated by our demand line here getting pushed to the right
At the same time, automotive manufacturers were suffering through supply chain issues that limited their ability to produce new cars. Since there were less new cars available, people held on to their current car longer, resulting in less supply of used vehicles available for sale. Less supply means our supply line gets pushed to the left. Notice how now the two lines cross at a much higher price pointy

I received advice to diversify my portfolio among various assets, including stocks and bonds, as a means to protect my inherited $2.5 million portfolio. While I typically prefer buying and holding assets, this strategy doesn't seem suitable for the current market, which feels like a rollercoaster ride. Additionally, I'm concerned about the impact of inflation on my portfolio and my financial security in retirement.

Bottom line, there's always depression for some, and profit for others, it all starts from having the right mindset. That said, I've set asides $250k to invest for future, unfortunately I'm a complete noob.

My advisor taught me that diversification is important to balance potential opportunities and risks and to consider a combination of stocks, bonds and other assets. Although inflation IS reflected in the price of goods, it is caused by a growth in the amount of money circulating in an economy. It is a monetary phenomenon not a supply or demand problem. The confusion arises from the distortion of the normal free market pricing mechanisms. More money circulating does increase demand, but strictly speaking is not the cause. The increase in the amount of money circulating can be caused by both total money supply and velocity.

I notice that Ackman incorporates ideals from the Buffet/Munger school of thought. He mentions discounting back stock values at 9 or 10 percent. That's an element of the Margin of Safety Mental model from your episode on 2023-08-03 "Charlie Munger: 'I got rich when I understood this' (Mental Models)" He also runs $PSHZF on a concentrated portfolio which tells me he has similar mindset that guides Berkshire. That could be an effect of actually running the Opportunity Cost mental model or simply being confident and smart enough to increase existing stakes rather than mindlessly hedging with his "30th or 40th ranked business". You've taught me a lot.

Inflation has a greater impact on people's cost of living than a crashing stock or housing market, resulting in an immediate and tangible effect. This explains the current high level of negative market sentiment, and our need for assistance in surviving this challenging economy. The financial markets have underperformed due to fears of inflation, causing stock and bond prices to plummet. Despite sounding basic, consulting a financial advisor has enabled me to outperform the market and achieve a profit of $850,000 since June 2022, making it the ideal approach to enter the financial markets today.

Higher interest rates only slightly curtail demand in the short term so then it lowers inflation a little. Problem with higher rates, it actually slows supply too (longer term). So raising rates will reach a point of actually perpetuating higher rates. Playing with rates is not a catch all problem solver. so we got a problem since this is a supply side inflation disease. (before it was a demand side, this is a first). Switching gears: the stocks he owns , aint all that. I think Ackman says invest in inelastic industries and companies with monopolies..so he thinks thats what he bought. well for now, he is right but that can change fast. Inflation will be here as long as we have a supply problem. Only small businesses can dig us out with more productivity to end inflation.

Yes, 4% is historically low, but like all things financial, they are in RELATIONSHIP to other asset and debt prices. 4% rate applied to current inflated asset prices is HIGH. Affordability of ANY asset or debt is based on two things; asset price and cost of debt. Asset prices and cost of debt have FAR outstripped wages. I am so frustrated that many of the guys like Bill as well as ALL the talking heads, are missing this connection and focusing almost solely on percentage rates. Come on guys!

Now people live in debt and buy expensive cars and iPhones while eating out constantly and whine about being poor. I went from poor to wealthy just by changing these things about my lifestyle and investing the extra cash. People forget that in the past life was a lot more simple and cheap. A lot of traders also believe that inflation is an excellent time to buy stocks, mutual funds, and other equity-based assets, even when safer cash-like alternatives like Treasury yields pay well. I'm not sure whether to put $400k into my stock portfolio, but I'm considering it.

I was able to maintain my market position and increase my $430K portfolio to about 65% since January by speaking with a consultant. In a few of months, I was also able to generate over $950K in net profit from high dividend generating stocks, bonds, and ETFs. Consult an expert if you're uncertain about the market.

@albatkobe HEATHER LEE LARIONI guides me. She works with Empower FinanciaI services. But there are a lot of independent advisors you might look into. For me, her strategy works hence my result. She provides entry and exit point for the securities I focus on

My advice is don’t fight the fed.. Short duration treasury bonds are attractive.. Be defensive with your allocation to equities

Is this a machine-generated voice? It's bloody ghastly. I can't listen to it for more than a minute or so.

Ackman is spot on but your analysis when you picked some "resilient" businesses is too shallow. For example, what happens to RBI when franchisees run into problems due to high interest rates and dropping real wages causing customers to tighten up their spending on overpriced fast food in order to pay more essential bills?

Inflation is not the result of higher demand. What you are talking about is price increase, which is a result of inflated money supply

BS actual inflation is caused by printing too much money which is why increasing interest rates isn't fixing it.

I just sold a property in Portland and I'm thinking to put the cash in stocks, I know everyone is saying its ripe enough, but Is this a good time to buy stocks? How long until a full recovery? How are other people in the same market raking in over $450k gains with months, I'm really just confused at this point.

Yes, a good number of folks are raking in huge 6 figure gains in this downtrend, but such strategies are mostly successfully executed by folks with in depth market knowledge/professional
