He had not completed the requirements for the Command Sergeant Major position, so he was returned to his previous rank of Major Sergeant. He would have been the senior NCO for that battalion, so his departure left a gap in the unit's leadership. He wanted to be all that he could be, unless it involved "being" in harm's way...

QUESTION: I watched an interview with a retired National Guard member saying that Walz has Stolen Valor - meaning his military career isn’t all that is public. The story goes that Walz reenlisted for 6 years and about 2 years into that period, his NG unit was being called up to go to Iraq. Then, suddenly Walz retires early and leaves his junior troops missing senior enlisted guidance. Then, the story goes that somehow the reenlistment period was stated as on 4 years not the 6 and he only retired 2 years early into his term. YOU need to dig dipper and tell us the story. 1:54 he retired as a master sergeant but only because he was demoted from command master sergeant because he refused to go to war with his unit and instead retired. To his National Guard Unit he was a coward and deserter. To tax payers he was a sponge. Accepting the pay and benefits of the national guard until he is called to duty, then retires as an E-9, the highest enlisted rank in the military, and receives all the benies of that rank, forever.
