To answer one of your questions, I didn't consider losing everything when I got married. But after divorcing and being left with just a car with enough belongings to fill it and less than half the wages/savings I worked for (she didn't work) I definitely won't be in a legally binding relationship ever again. Here in Brazil we have 3 types of marriage agreements. 1 total separation, everything each of you has or buys after the wedding belongs only to you. Partial communion, you will only share the things you bought after the marriage, and total communion, after you get married every and each one of your assets will be split.

Divorce, court proceedings, lawyer costs and the fear of financial instability resulting from a divorce frightens men and is the number one reason most men will not get married, let alone twice. The amounts that are determined stem from a time in history when women weren't on any kind of a career path, but were homemakers that had no reasonable prospects for a fair, living wage. When society shifted and women became career-minded, considered "equal in the eyes of the law," and trained for their futures in the workplace alongside men that slowly respected women's contributions over time... and the alimony/support payments were still being calculated by the courts as if the wife were laboring at home, not earning a salary, and entitled to have a lifetime payment from her former spouse. And that's why men don't like the idea of getting married. It's not the lie that they don't want to be tied down, it's that they don't want to lose half of their bank account, pay for his lawyer, pay for her lawyer, sell everything he worked hard for to live his dream to pay those bills, including the house they once shared, or to pay for that house that she now owns as part of the settlement. It's one thing to love someone and be with them forever. It's another thing to enter into a legally binding contract that can be arbitrated and dissolved by a government official so you can walk away feeling like you didn't just lose a relationship, but you lost your lifetime of security.

Well it scares me, it's frightening to think that everything I've worked for, my cars, houses, investments could be taken away from me just because a marriage didn't work.
