He shorted Tesla well before it was over valued. He shorted Tesla before it was clear Tesla would survive. A short can be seen simply as a bet (a prediction) but it’s also a vote. If you have a massive short on a company AND you have a public image, you can help move the sentiment of the market towards the company in your favor. He strikes me as very dishonest. How can you say you’re about renewable energy and then short the company doing the most to create the future you claim to want. Hopefully, it’s simply that he wants his companies be the winners in renewable energy but it *feels* more nefarious than just that.

In Elon's biography there is a topic about this, he said it was simply because he thought Tesla would devalue. Later he also said that selling half a billion dollars wouldn't hurt Elon at all, he was just saving his own money
Because Tesla is not a huge contributor, it was a huge competitor. In 2021, Tesla had 79% marketshare in EVs. Instead of focusing on that, Elon said he didn't want Tesla to be an EV company, and so its marketshare is now down to 49% and falling fast (about 15% per year). While Ford, GM, Kia and Hyundai are all producing new models this year and next, Tesla has done nothing..

It's very telling how the conversation on climate is so pushed forward but not so much on environmentalism. We all know the trade off - convert to electric to reduce emissions BUT increase pollution of ground and water due to by-products of refining rare earth materials... One of those affects billionaires less (it's the pollution one... Billionaires are worried about flood, weather and heat, not so much pollution)
Because he is a realist. No country or company is going to harm their GDP or profits by cutting back on consumption in any meaningful way. There are little things he pushes to cut down on consumption, but the reality is that energy is profits.

I mean, "talk" IS the action in many contexts. Sometimes when the dichotomy of talk versus actions is framed, it's hard to then shake that again in contexts where that doesn't make sense. One example is politics, it's all talk: negotiations, presenting and pleading ideas, debates. People sometimes think that politicians just do nothing but talk all day. But that is just a huge part of their job. It's convincing people, because your policy needs to be supported. It's talking to sectors, because politicians aren't the experts. Scientists also publish research and journals to communicate things. I feel like "talk" is an often overlooked but very important part of the process towards having action be effective and targeted. Having actions be understood and supported. Having action be coordinated. We can't just send people out and say: "I'd love to see what you all come up with by looking out the window and noticing the change." The innovations will be presented first. That's all talk.
I really want to like Bill and he's unbelievably brilliant and admirable in a lot of ways. But he comes across as very inauthentic, calculated, careful, indirect.

In China they actually don't emit that much per person. In the west, the lifestyles of people make it so that we emit less overall, but if you just divide the total emission by how many people there are, we are far worse. That's something we don't want to see, so we only ever use the other statistic. But it's like saying that they need to stop showering so that we can eat 2 steaks a day. In India and South America they're doing even better than both us and China. Just look it up: CO2 Emissions per capita. The problem isn't in the places where individuals live more humble lifestyles, but they are with more people. The problem is there where people live exorbitantly. Not to mention we let our dirty work be done there. Edit: by the way I agree with you that billionaires aren't the angels they want to seem, obviously. I appaud his efforts. Lately I feel like we are too far down, but maybe with lots of solutions we could make some progress. I think ultimately we also need to have less kids as a Earth population. I think around 1-3 billion would be optimal. Think about all the crowded places and how with more people it would be even more crowded. And more people means more forests cut, more pastures, more soy planted, more grazing. Less space for wildlife and biodiversity.

Nonsense. Livestock production takes tons of land to grow the crops to fatten the cows, pollutes the land,, and cows are significant source of the greenhouse gas methane. The world would be much improved if people ate plants directly instead of feeding 16 kg of plants to get 1 kg of beef.
