I can't believe this was 22 years ago man... *sigh* Thanks for posting this though Kevin, much appreciated on the 20th anniversary of his passing mate - "Vernon was a false prophet", long live Bill (and respectfully, rest in peace). Sacred Cow Productions changed more lives (mine more than most perhaps) than you could ever imagine by releasing Bill's work (both anti and post-humously), and of course your own wonderful work with the documentary "American Drug War: The Last White Hope". You have my deepest respect, admiration and gratitude. Safe journeys to thee and thine sir, Dream

I found the music in a comedy album, and/or in Arizona Bay specifically, quite enjoyful, soothing, really creates a peaceful atmosphere, kind of allows time to contemplate the joke, what it implies, also to contemplate Bill's life experience, the importance of his late work, of his late message. If nothing else, puts me at peace, in a world that is quite irrational and kind of just crazy.

I hate that he died and other hacks got to live and succeed. Bill was probably the most intelligent person out there spewing truth, him and Carlin.
@aleclaskaris6271
@aleclaskaris6271 3 года назад
Nothing Bill ever said was that novel or transformative. He never compelled me to reconsider a position I already held. Bill wasn't the funniest comedian either, he re-used a lot of material and went on to many anti-female/american rants throughout his stand-up shows. Lenny Bruce and George Carlin were far more insightful, talented, and original than Bill Hicks.
@happyfreeliferc

@@aleclaskaris6271 explain his popularity here and in the UK then.is it something he said that got your goat ? Carlin mention golf many times in his act ,I never took it personally, I love the game ,he and Bill spoke real shit that affects us all.CHEERS.😎
@jakobneville2917
@jakobneville2917 3 года назад
@@happyfreeliferc Bill Hicks was an overrated, immoral stand-up comedian who pushed for mandated recreational drug use. Hicks was never particularly popular in the United States, but he was unquestionably more popular in the United Kingdom. Because he had a lot to say about America, and it was never positive.
@Jack-in-the-country
@Jack-in-the-country 2 года назад
@@aleclaskaris6271 If there's one thing you can't say, it's that those guys were specifically more original than Bill. While I agree with you that he doesn't often make novel points, this is moot when you consider what his mission was: to bring important cultural insights to people whom he was right to believe were complacently missing them. But as far as my argument for his greater originality, Bill's strategy was to employ very surreal tactics in order to "break the spell," as it were, WHILE he is giving you these insights. His on-stage freakouts and apparent psychotic breaks forced you to REALLY be there in his anger, and in the tense awkwardness that followed the only thing remaining for the audience to hold onto was his point. Whereas one can easily watch Carlin and think, "yeah! You're so right man!! This is so fucking true!" all while remaining in the Kafkaesque hypocrisy of consumer Capitalism that those with sufficient knowledge live every day.
@crawlingamongthestars3736
@crawlingamongthestars3736 2 года назад
What a lot of people don't seem to understand is that stand-up comedy is generally not the place to turn to for terribly original thought, or even coherent, intellectual thought. For that, you have to go to literature, philosophy etc. Which is not to say that Bill Hicks and George Carlin weren't extremely talented at what they did, and weren't intelligent people, because they certainly were. There's just only so much that can come out of the artform, would be my point. And Carlin and Hicks were exceptions to the rule also (there are too many superficial, dull comics to count)... Most people are simply too lazy/impatient/dumb/consumed by their own lives, to really sit down and challenge themselves with say, difficult, mind-blowing texts, or sophisticated art film, or whatever else, so instead they'll turn to stand-up, or Marvel movies, or jackasses on Twitter, or a Netflix series, or the latest Assassin's Creed, etc, and think that what they're consuming are grand artistic achievements because all their friends, the TV commercials, and critics on Rotten Tomatoes or RU-vid endlessly praise and hype up this kitsch, drivel, mediocre-at-best crap... Most people don't have a clue, and/or don't want to have a clue. It just is what it is. Still, Hicks and Carlin were great, but it's not like they're comparable to high culture intellectuals and academics. It isn't the same thing, not even close.

Kev!!! This was such a legendary recording session. Resulted in so much great creativity. And that studio is so beautifully crude and analog. Love!!! I've always loved Hicks, but I never shared his sentiment towards drum machines and electronic music in general. I love live, analog playing AND electronic weirdness and beats as well. But I understood his sentiment towards pop and candy music in general. It's a fine line.
