Bill Kazmaier dominated the Strongman scene in the early 80's and was decades ahead of his time when it came to static strength. When I think of Strongmen from that era who could compete against todays athletes, Bill is always front and centre.
Here I take a little look at his progression through the sport and some of my favourite Kaz moments.

Keep in mind that 40 years ago when Kaz was benching mid 600's he was doing it after squatting almost 900 in a full competition and it was with a mid width grip and no real arch. He was also in his mid 20's with a world of potential. An injury sidetracked his bench but those who observed him felt that in that era he would have been the first man to bench 700.

Bill Kazmaier is a legend. It's insane that he won three WSM titles, wasn't invited back for 5-6 years, comes back and then gets 2nd?! All that time away from WSM and he was still an absolute monster. The man won Iceland's Strongest Man and didn't even live there. Wild stuff.

I agree. And that also says a lot about Brian. Four titles, which Kaz most certainly would've achieved as well if he'd been allowed to continue, maybe even 5, but then, four years older than Kaz was when he came back, he came second to a blooming Tom Stoltman, the start of the next generation of Strongman. And he wasn't far off from the other two former WSM winners this year either - he could've maybe gotten 2nd place then too. It was close.

@Natural Creature He had a very hard time training squat because of his shoulder mobility, after training heavy squat he talked about how the next day he couldnt even bench 100kg because of how fucked up his shoulders were. If he could train Squat with a Safety bar, both his bench and squat would benefit. Also, he wouldnt injure his peck during the barbending if he competed later, and that also hurt his bench.

I’d imagine similar. A lot more people in the world, more involved In athletics that help prepare athletes for a potential transition to strongman. I’d imagine he’d be competing for titles and world records with modern training, recovery etc.... right with the likes of Big Z, Shaw, Thor, Eddie, Martins, Novikov, Lalas, Mateusz, Stoltman etc...... Kaz started at a time when they took people from other sports, that didn’t train for strongman. Kaz looked like a modern day strongman where most of his competition wasn’t close to him physically. Kaz would likely be bigger and better than he was, but the competition is a lot better.

Bill is the epitome of pure, classic strength. I love watching those old competitions during my training. The passion these gentlemen carried with them. Awesome content as always, Loz Thank you!

Ego??? What Ego does Mr. Kaz have? I’ve the honor of meeting him and even giving him a lift from the airport one evening while he was waiting on a taxi up here in Anchorage Ak about 10 years ago and the man was so damn humble. I dropped him off at his destination and one of the people in that neighborhood was loading a bunch kids soccer balls to start a practice and Mr. Bill instantly started signing some of the balls for the man to raffle off for a fundraiser the gentleman was gonna have to raise money so the kids in the Mt. View ( hood ) area of town could play soccer even if they didn’t have money. The dude was so happy. It was amazing really, he automatically just started helping. People up here love that man.

Great content, as always Loz! Thank you for posting. Hmm... two guys, 3-letter nicknames that end in "Z"... massively strong. Coincidence? I don't think so! Kaz was and is a beast. Intense and scary when he set his mind to something and you were in his path!

Grew up in the late 80's and 90's. Used to watch strong man all the time, and specifically loved watching the re-runs with Kaz.

Video did not show it but one of his greatest dominating events was the KEG Loading event. I believe it was 6 Kegs that had to be lifted and put onto a flatbed truck. Most if not all of the other competitors first lifted the kegs then ran/walked them over to the truck 10-' to 12' away. KAZ picked up the first 4 or 5 Kegs and THREW them through the air! It was pure domination.

Kaz wasn't just respected, he was feared. That's why he wasn't invited for four years running.

He held the world record bench press at one time for his weight class at 660lbs for the 245lb weight class, just insane

One of the things overlooked by some is Kaz's mental attitude towards self-improvement as well as lifting heavy weights. Good stuff.

The only person in modern times who could rival kaz for pure static power and self belief is Eddie hall in his strongman prime. It's like they both really hate themselves if they fail anything

It's worth noting that had Kaz not torn his pec while doing the bench press in 1981, he would have continued to break his own records. He also fought with MANY injuries and never backed down. A true warrior.

How much Kaz has contributed to the strength and well-being of American kids especially, but kids all over the world, can never be overstated. Watching him as a kid got me into lifting, which got me through the tough years. I know I'm only one of countless millions. The kid in me still gets adrenalized watching these old feats of his, while the grandfather in me is just grateful, knowing I'll pass along that inspiration to my grandson in just a few years when he's old enough to start lifting. Thank you, Kaz.
