"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on RU-vid. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on RU-vid, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Including buying a home or a new car. Meaning, MEANING a large amount of people who make the money to make the payments, can't get their homes, cars or children because they can not overcome that debt to income ratio. And of course to add insult to injury if a person has a master's degree and Does manage to get a home loan even with that student loan debt ratio, they are typically.charged MORE I'm interest. Not that they need to, but that they can get away with it. Disgusting effing country we live in this day and age

This is a great point. There are so many negative feedback loops in our economy. We've been marketed the American Dream: college, car, job, marriage, house, kids (more people are choosing not to have kids). All of these are immensely expensive for anyone without the proper capital (almost every young adult). So, we go into debt to hedge our bets on the future. It's no mistake that most of these things are what people usually get loans for. As you mentioned, loans will generally increase in interest if someone has a lot of liability already, e.g. student loans. All of these commodities we use to invest in our future go up in price at an alarming rate. If your credit score is low, good luck too; all interest-bearing accounts and even car insurance will go up. My general theory on why the economy is so off the rails is what I like to call, "debt economy." Before credit cards were common it was much more difficult to obtain liability. The most common forms were: car, house, store-credit, layaway, and business. Banks were much more cautious giving out loans. The economy will generally adapt to what people can afford. In our current economy, a person could technically have: 10k+ car debt, 10k+ college debt), 100k+ house debt, sometimes thousands of credit card debt; this is on the low end. This isn't advisable, but essentially how much of our economy is in a bubble? Based on what people can "afford." Prices go up faster, because anyone can literally levy their future towards all commodities. Other predatory practices aren't even considered.

So tell me this, I did everything I believed was right, didn't put myself in massive debt, worked in many cases two jobs to pay for tuition and books, and I have worked in my field for the same as you, 15 years, I don't have debt but how can I not feel punished? I chose not to take the loan. While I agree something needs to be done, I don't believe this is the way to do it. You have your story that fits this narrative, mine is similar but I paid upfront instead of over time. Why do you deserve forgiven tuition and I do not? -Now before the haters come, I do not disagree with a plan that helps everyone, I think a plan that forgives some peoples debt and not others is counter productive, all I want is fair for all college students, and tuition that is fair.

Respectfully, the problem is college tuition, how is forgiving your debt because you took a loan and ignoring my upfront cash I worked upwards of 70+ hours a week sometimes to pay for more deserving? I understand we agree on the problem, but we are worlds apart on the solution. If Bernie had a solution that impacted a favorable resolution for all college-goers then I believe everyone would be on board. When I returned to a very wrecked job market I couldn't get a job for various reasons, one of the most prominent being my AA didn't match my BA. Now that I was firmly off disability, with no money, and competing with both Boomers, and millennials at the time I made the decision to go back to school and sink myself further into debt in order to keep a roof over my head, because good paying jobs were non existent and hope that an MBA would open doors to a good paying job once the recession was over. News flash! it did not! Like millennials and now Gen Z I had to take jobs in Amazon, Staples, and now finally the post office in order to make ends meat. student debt forgiveness is not even far enough IMO, there needs to be government-regulated tuition control, because it is so far out of control at this point it has been outpacing inflation by 3 or 4-to-1, and that is just since the beginning of the century, this outpacing has been going on since at least the early 90s when I was in college.

As a hiring manager in the tech industry, my perspective is that we have already lost the education fight. In so many countries, it is possible to earn a degree in tech at no cost. Thanks to the internet tubes allowing (talented) remote workers to perform software engineering off-shore for a fraction of the cost. Add to that US corporations require the degree check box and the fact that if you leave your job, you lose your health insurance, makes a major impediment to entrepreneurism. More power to them, but the Red State rubes need to realize that these high-tech jobs go to our global friends becuase, by and large the high-tech talent pool in the US is shrinking. @CyRxJustin
@CyRxJustin Год назад
@@cobyjohnson415 "when you forgive debt you have to have first GIVEN the money that is no longer going to be paid back to the tax payers." No, that's not how it works. First, the obvious problem with your statement, is interest. People aren't paying back their loans, they're paying back their loans several times over in interest. Forgiving a loan usually doesn't mean total debt forgiveness, it just means that a portion of it is forgiven: sometimes the principle, sometimes the interest. Second, college prices are grossly inflated because of market manipulation. You are disqualified from many jobs unless you have a degree of some sort even if it's unrelated for no reason. We're also told over and over again that the easy path to success is through college. That means that even though in 1970 it cost $350 / year ($2,400 adjusted for inflation) to attend college, in 2020 the average cost had risen to $10,000 / year. A $40,000 loan at 5% APR over 10 years would end up costing you almost $11,000 in interest. Yet kids are forced to make these expensive financial decisions under the false pretense that a well-paying job is waiting for them when they finish, only to find out they were lied to.

OH MY GOODNESS!! I have to say it again, ...when you here Bernie Sanders speak he immediately grabs your attention. He articulates like and professional speaker (because he is one) and makes very clear his point/s and messages with absolute ease and without the need to think or pause to conjure up ideas. He simply expresses himself very well. When someone can do this, it is a result of their knowing well the subject they are speaking on. They are engaged with the words and the message coming out of their mouth simply because they passionately believe it. Even a less versed or educated person can pull this off when a subject near to their heart or a subject they are very familiar they wish to share. BUT, inversely, when we have to sit and watch the president of the United States, Joe Biden, say even the simplest of things or broadcast the smallest amount of any information he stumbles and stammers and takes painfully too much time to look at the ceiling or look left and right as if he's making like he's trying to engage people with eye contact where he is actually just trying to buy time to organize a tired, confused and vacant mind. It's pathetic for that person to hold such a lofty and important position. And completely unbecoming of a president of the most powerful nation on earth. So before Biden, we had Trump!!!...an abhorrent narcissist and ridiculous laughingstock with his similar but different limitations with oration or providing information through public address. Age my be a feature with Biden. Maybe!!?? Bernie Sanders is 14 months older and yet he can debate anyone or broadcast information with lucidity, crafted precision and intelligence like any well versed thoughtful person can do. It's not a special feature he has, Obama could also intelligibly pass profound thoughts similarly through public speaking. But its a feature that is very important for us voters to seek out among the other presidential features a candidate should possess. The political views and content of these clearly presented messages is obviously another extremely important part of the features of our candidates we want them to have. Its important of course, that person, the president, will have the greatest of influences on the direction of our world and lives. He must have control of profound thoughts and demonstrate clear vision. The current and and former president DO/DID NOT HAVE THIS. Bernie, age is not a thing for you. Not even a little bit. It may have affected Biden??!! ..but personally I think he's just plain dim. But, Bernie Sanders, you are sharp AND you got this. And literally millions of "fans", "the people", will have your back more than ever before. Your name is world famous...your brand is clear...and and your influence could positively change our world direction we so desperately need. Yep. I'm a very poor and self supporting college student. I'm at community college now, I lost pell grants. I can't afford tuition or living expenses working minimum wage. And internships pay $900/semester. Federal work study pays $13-$16/hr at 20 hours a week. I simply cannot afford college without a scholarship.

So, Bill says student debt relief is "giving money away", so what would price gouging be then? Hmm, Billy? So, the students would only spend that free money on drugs/ alcohol or stuff? Ok, what would the wealthy spend it on?

Exactly. It's not a giveaway, it's a social investment. These doctors, nurses, engineers, coding majors, business majors, etc., will all contribute back far more than they take. And we NEED those professionals for a smoothly operating system.

@joshmatthews3450 Год назад
What do you think would happen to those professionals if we didn’t forgive their debt?
@RBEmpathy
@RBEmpathy Год назад
@@joshmatthews3450 we're already dealing with shortages of professionals in many sectors. We have a serious shortage of doctors and especially nurses and less people deciding to take on more debt in the future will make these issues worse. Look up the relevant statistics - we already have difficult economic circumstances that are causing labor shortages, and student debt doesn't help. Arguably, people are less incentivised every year to become a doctor or nurse, given that because of the shortage and the high debt involved, that means that schedules of doctors and nurses are SLAMMED full from day one, causing them to miss out on family and friends and hobbies and interests. Having no life makes people less interested, and a part of all of that is student debt.
@joshmatthews3450
@joshmatthews3450 Год назад
@@RBEmpathy I’m talking about forgiving current debt of people currently in these occupations, that’s the bill we’re talking about. As far as the future, this bill does nothing to address that. Of course we should mandate administration reductions and restrictions, that’s where the ballooning costs have gone.
