But I suspect that our definitions of "evolution" are just different. To me, you may be mistaking "evolution" to mean "improvement"? As always, semantics is key here, especially if specific nomenclatures of different scientific fields (biology, history of religions and cosmology) are involved. Evolutionary biologists like Dawkins, Coyne or Shubin mean something quite different from cosmologists or astrophysicists. You could boil all of it down to a common core of »change over time«, but then you just say »everything changes«, and all you have left is a truism.

I stopped at 46 min because I just couldn’t take the very weak arguments that only take a little bit of reading, exegesis, and scholarly work to understand. Disappointing. P.s. I'm not here to troll. I'm here, because I find the presentations to be fascinating. The historical critical method is taught not as an exercise in apologetics, but rather as a way to bridge the hermeneutical gap (i.e. the cultural and historical differences that prevent us from understanding the text). While the application of scientific method and literary criticism to "holy writ" is troubling for many seminarians, I find it to be quite invigorating. However, I realize that I am not the average parish pastor. Years of teaching comparative religion, my background in philosophy, and participation in interfaith dialogue place me at odds with many of my fellow coreligionists. While some may view historical critical method and the religious practices to be at odds, I like to understand them as being locked in a dialectic. The ancient Greeks understood the complementarity of Logos and Mythos. Logos (logic) and Mythos (mythological narrative) are not mutually exclusive; they are complementary. Logos creates artificial intelligence and Mythos helps us to understand its meaning. While I teach scripture using historical critical method, I will present the narrative in mythic form during worship. However, I do not confuse Logos and Mythos (e.g. I will never promote a creationist / literal interpretation of the two and a half creation myths found in Genesis). Perhaps this approach can best be explained by Joseph Campbell's quote, "If you treat myth literally, you pervert it; if you ignore myth, truth sneaks out the back door." In my opinion, religion becomes a toxic liability to society when it seeks to promote its Mythos over Logos. Cheers, George

In fact I haven't been able to go back to Bart because my initial assessment was that he was too bullying for my taste. That interview was with Seth Andrews, who certainly didn't do anything to antagonize him. Seth is always a gentleman. This presenter here made some great arguments with direct quotes from the OT to substantiate his opinions, which he freely admitted. So I credit him for that.

When one attempts to read the Bible to understand Judaism and Christianity [in this case, the Old Testament], the most important thing do is: 1). Study by comparison of more than one translation; 2). Have a Strong’s Concordance at hand to establish the correct translation from original language; and 3). Read the text for what it actually says, not what you might have been taught that it says.

@Eric You might find value in reading about the Gnostics, specifically the Sethians, who believed that 'Yahweh' was a trickster god (like Lokey) who created the world but was a jerk to it, and that Jesus was sent by the supreme high god to save the people. Also, they believe that the serpent in Genesis was Jesus incarnate, trying to save humanity early on. Notice that the serpent never lied or deceived, he just showed Adam and Eve the path to wisdom, and understanding the difference between good and evil.

The problem is that people who are Christian tend not to read the bible in a metaphysically sophisticated way. If they did they wouldn’t be Christian. Jordan Peterson talks about the story of Christ bearing his cross as a message that we all should bear our own burdens. I can read that kind of meaning into Tolkien or JK Rowling. It doesn’t mean Aragorn or Ron Weasley are, or ever were, more than just fictional characters. Whilst the stories of a global flood, the fall, the exodus, the gospel etc. might have all been knowingly written by authors as allegories or fables, they are not viewed that way by most of the billion Christians around the world.

The defenders of reason never claim to have an answer to all the mysteries. They just debunk the hogwash of the religious and say that some mysteries of old are explained by science. The mistake people like you make is to think that we claim that science can answer everything. We do not make this claim. Science has it's limits.

The question is whether or not people recognize the truth value within the stories at all. In the modern era I would say that the vast majority of theists read the Bible with far more metaphysical depth than most atheists, who in my experience tend want to read it almost exclusively as a historical/scientific document. Granting that Peterson has changed this somewhat. The problem with conservative or fundamentalist readings of the Bible is not that they lack metaphysical depth. It's that they also want to give it historical and scientific credibility. The depth of the Bible's message is substantially more than just 'bearing our own burdens.' Peterson has gone far beyond just that in just his Biblical lecture series and he only just made it through Genesis! Not only that but, most of this conversation is focused solely on the Bible itself, but a tremendous amount of work has also been done elaborating on the symbolic framework contained in the Christian story by later Christian writers, especially those in the eastern orthodox tradition, most of which atheists tend to be completely unfamiliar with. I'm a huge fan of both Tolkien and Rowling but neither of those stories has even close to the level of metaphysical complexity that the Christian tradition does. There's no Sermon On The Mount or Book Of Job in Tolkien. Not only that but neither of those stories could have even been written without the benefit of the Christian tradition. Tolkien was himself deeply Christian and acknowledged very openly that he borrowed heavily from the mythological structure of Christianity in the story of middle-earth. Also, it's worth noting that Peterson is not the only voice in the academic world who's bothered to take the Bible more seriously. He's far less well known but Rene Girard has written extensively about this subject in ways that anyone who is a fan of Peterson would likely find very interesting. While it's become very commonly accepted to say that the Bible is just another set of mythological tropes, Girard's interpretation uses an anthropological analysis of ritual sacrifice in mythology to show how the Bible is actually much more historically unique than is generally recognized. He was able to show that upon careful reading the Biblical stories are actually complete deconstructions of the mythic motifs that proceeded them, and that rather than merely copying those tropes it actually completely subverts them in key ways. For this reason he called Christianity "the end of mythology" or "anti-mythology."

Jerusalem was sacked, the temple destroyed, the Jews taken into captivity, in 589 BC, by the Babylonians.. it is reasonable to assume that whatever writing the Jews had at that time was also destroyed, and the Bible tells us that after the captivity, about 50 yrs later, Ezra collected together stories of ancient Israel.. Ezra wrote ancient Hebrew Mythology, not history.. Adam and Eve, the Flood, Exodus, and even the story of Moses, all Myth, probly.. there may be some history in Chronicles and Judges, probly not all is myth.. but we can be fairly certain that Ezra wrote the Bible, about 500BC .. the Scriptures were again destroyed, scattered, during the Maccabean Revolt, and later again, a new library was formed, after that disastrous war.. this is what the Books Of Maccabee's tells us..
