My favorite year in music. The Bangles sent the first two weeks of the year making "Walk Like An Egyptian" a #1 hit for four consecutive weeks. Heart, Prince, Shelia E., Wendy And Lisa, Jody Watley, Smokey Robinson, Fleetwood Mac, Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine, Richard Marx, The Fixx, Company B., The Hooters, Def Leppard, Swing Out Sister, John Mellencamp, Squeeze, Tiffany, Belinda Carlisle, INXS, George Michael, Lou Gramm TWICE (his first solo and with Foreigner), and My two favorites: The Cars (their last), and Debbie Gibson (her first), ALL released albums in 1987. Whew, I'm tired.

1987 is the logical progression of popular music compared to the previous year. We’ve pretty much phased out New Wave and music is much more streamlined compared to before. The golden age was filled with a lot of small acts and 1 hit wonders, but now we’ve got plenty of big names. It would take forever to list them all, but this seems to be the year where all of the classic 80s stars made hits. Ironically, despite the charts being pretty much dominated with power ballads, hair metal, dance pop and the earliest versions of New Jack Swing, it actually feels more diverse than the year before it. Pop rock also makes a return to form, with plenty of old and new bands coming at the forefront, such as the newcomers U2 and their signature style of music. One last minor thing to note is this year has a large amount of cover songs that hit #1 this year. Alone, Mony Mony, Lean On Me, I Think We’re Alone Now and of course La Bamba all hit the top, which is pretty cool to me. Contrary to what other people would think, I think 1987 was a much better year than 1986. The songs that stand out are all-time classics, and songs sound a lot more different from each other. The ballads this year have a lot more power too it, both the R&B and rock-oriented versions. Honestly, I feel this year had a lot more energy than the previous year. While some songs are pretty forgettable or dated, if there is any year in the 1980s that can hold its own to the golden era, I would say it’s 1987. Check out the year end there are a lot of amazing songs that I wish more people talked about. Best and worst #1s of the year: La Bamba by Los Lobos (Staying true to the original version from the 50s, with only a couple minor touches to modernize it and it sounds amazing. A great tribute to one of the greatest rock n roll songs of all time) and I’ve Had The Time Of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

Interesting thing here was 2 remakes hitting #1 back to back with tiffanys "I think were alone now" and then Billy Idol with Mony Mony. Bet that hasnt happened very often.

Michael Jackson blocking both Prince and Madonna from getting a number 1 will forever be iconic.

Hard to argue against it. Tons of great songs that year. I dont like how "walk like an egyptian" is considered the #1 song of the year. Its garbage if u ask me.

I noticed that Michael Jackson's hit singles only lasted for a week. None of them were long lasting in the Billboard charts compared to Thriller album.

Why is it impossible to see the dates and songs watching on my phone? Even with my glasses on the letters & #'s are miniscule and blurry!

Billy Idol number 1 on charts was the live version of Mony Mony not the studio version from 1981

i think in certain cases he is limited by copyrights and certain versions, for example those lisa lisa sound clips are obviously not the original recordings.

Were they robbed? A look at the number 2 hits of 1987 and the songs that blocked them. Notorious - One of Duran Duran’s biggest hits. While iconic, it was beaten out of the top spot by the Bangles and I have no complaints. Not robbed. C’est La Vie - Ugh. Deserved to lose against Shake You Down. Not robbed there. At This Moment also blocked this which has to be among the worst top 2s in Billboard history. Not really robbed there either. Keep Your Hands To Yourself - Might be even worse than above. Thank you Livin on a Prayer. Somewhere Out There - James Ingram and Linda Ronstadt created magic here. I do think Jacob’s Ladder is still a good song. I’ll say not robbed. Let’s Wait Awhile - Great song by Janet. Club Noveau blocked her with Lean On Me which I’m more of a fan of the Bill Withers version. She was robbed. Don’t Dream It’s Over - While I Knew You Were Waiting For Me was a good duet by George and Aretha, I feel this Crowded House hit has a far bigger legacy today. Was robbed. Looking For A New Love - Jody was onto something with this song. It got blocked by the cheesy I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight and the iconic With Or Without You. It was definitely robbed by the former but the later is far more iconic. I Want Your Sex - U2’s Still Having Found What I’m Looking For is a lot to type but it’s a hit that has lived on for decades. I Want Your Sex is a great hit but George has many other number ones so he can take the L here. Not robbed. U Got The Look - Prince is a songwriting genius but Lost in Emotion is superior. Not robbed. Causing A Commotion - I can see why Bad beat out Madonna here as it had heavy rotation on MTV. I’ll say it wasn’t robbed there. I Think We’re Alone Now is a sweet teen pop song so I’ll say it wasn’t robbed there either. Is This Love - Such a great love ballad Whitesnake put out. Faith was a bigger song made by a bigger artist so I’ll say it wasn’t robbed there either but it’s close.
