she’s said the song is somewhat based on having sleep paralysis. but I feel like another analogy could be fame itself. I don’t think Billie enjoys being “famous”.....as she said before, being famous makes her feel like a “toy”. but there are tons of hints in the song that point to the music industry. I think the words spoken by Crooks: “come here”, “listen”, “careful” might be stages of her fame. in the verse after “come here”, it could be the moment when fame knocked on her door. she says “what is it exactly you’re payin? is the amount cleaning you out? am I satisfactory?” so, possibly, that was her desiring to get into the industry and being hopeful of what it held for her. then, Crooks says “listen” which could be the point where she starts to realize what fame truly means. she says: “Keep you in the dark, what had you expected? Me to make you my art and make you a star and get you connected?” as well as “calling security, keeping my head held down.” Billie is very much someone who does what they want, when they want. I’d imagine having a whole management team and security and crazy schedules would be frustrating. she also says “for the debt I owe, gotta sell my soul. cause I can’t say no, I can’t say no.” which is the clearest sign pointing to the music industry. she feels trapped in this world now and possibly, the only time she escapes is when she’s asleep.

She's asking him to end her so he can live without this paralysis. She's the good demon, wanting to help even if it means an end to herself.
