I think this shows the feelings and ups and downs of a codependent toxic relationship. Shes closing every door that he's not behind. She opens up a door to see a whirlwind. It looks dangerous, destructive, and she doesnt know whats past it but walks in searching for him. I think showing how we sometimes walk into and allow negative behaviors, people, and things in our life in search for what we think is love and intimacy or hoping that the people we love will change. She finds him in the hallway. They fight but she seems happy that she's leaving with him. They are toxic but they always search for each other. As he searches for her while she's walking outside feeling herself. She tries to run away but they get into this playful match. We can't tell if they're playing or fighting at times. In these types of relationships there can be glimpses of hope where the world at times looks beautiful with them but you're really drowning and losing yourself.

The camera movement, Billie almost stumbling up the stairs...this exactly describes what it's like to be in a love/hate relationship. That fighting scene nearly made me tear up. i think the doors at the beginning represent an "exit" to this -relationship-, an opportunity to get away from her partner. But she closed them, she WANTED to be with him but he didn't want to. Lead to an argument and them running away together kinda represents a mutual breakup kinda. Her finally being outside shows us that she's 'free' from this relationship, only for him to appear again, now wanting her back again. This time theres no doors to close or open. and then he finally caught up to her, this relationship is back but she's drowning from it. But that smile at the end, haunts me because it means one thing. She liked it, she 'liked' being chased (and maybe even purposefully getting caught?) EVEN when she knows she's drowning from it, fully knowing that its a toxic relationship. That's my interpretation of this MV, NOT Billie love life.
The fact that Billie directed this makes everything perfect cause it represents exactly what the song means and it also gives you that rollercoaster feeling. A piece of art just like the song.
There is this haunting sadness and unsettling anxiety that builds up throughout this entire song for me. The music video only exemplifies those feelings. Being in a toxic relationship is much like drowning - it starts with little things, the occasional wave crashing over you as you try to keep your head above water. But soon, the waves become larger, more frequent, until you're gasping for air constantly. This is shown perfectly at the end with the production, the visuals, and the vocals. In the last minute of the video, where it cuts between them fighting in the grass and Billie falling, it’s showing how the toxic relationship she was in made her lose herself. She was falling further into this toxic cycle of fighting and making up but she was losing her real self.

shouting this into the void. This song has been helping me process very old grief. When I was kid, my neighborhood best friend was one of the few people to smile when they saw me. It had been a few years since we were close, I was 9, she was 10, and I remember finding her at a party and we both got so excited seeing each other again, she smiled so big, I'll never forget how it felt. She always looked like Chihiro from Spirited away - and I loved Chihiro for that. That was the last time I saw her in real life. A few months later, her and her new baby nephew were murdered - they died because the killer hurt them then barricaded the door, preventing EMS from getting in to save them. Open up the door. The last time I saw her was in a dream, where I asked her if it hurt - she said it really did, and then i never spoke to her again. I'd never really acknowledged to myself how Spirited Away reflects my grief - until this song forced me to see it - where everything about its influences and lyrical connections force me to confront my loss. In a very real sense this song put a closed door in my mind and I've somehow always known what was behind it - but I've never let myself try to open it. Yeah I kinda thought of it more as someone who depressed or trapped in the same situation trying to find a way out. I also thought of the idea when shes says "saw you turn around, but it wasn't your face" representing growing apart from someone so much that you no longer know who they are even when they have the same face technically but it isn't the face you know. I feel like this song can have many different meanings which is super cool!
