I think this song can be interpreted differently by everyone (that's what makes art so beautiful), but for me I see it having two different meanings. Depression or Abusive relationship with another person or ones-self. Thought I found a way Thought I found a way, yeah (found) But you never go away (never go away) So I guess I gotta stay now In depression we, have fleeting moments of happiness. Moments when we finally think we have made it past the storm, but then we relapse and we don't have the strength to pull ourselves out, so we just stay in the pain until the next moment of happiness breaks through. In abusive relationships, sometimes we find the strength to break away from the person holding our chains, but some how we manage to get pulled back into it. By their charisma or empty promises to change. We stay, out of shame or the belief that maybe this broken relationship is all we deserve. I feel like the box signifies depression or other mental illness. The chains represent all the negative thoughts weighing her down. I think the chains khalid has on either represents his own problems or maybe he's tried to help her and only got taken down further himself into feeling depressed. The box got long representing it never ending. And finally they gave up. The box is now empty ready for it's next victims. Could be wrong but I feel close.
