My mum had Tourette’s quite badly but it was just put down to ,bad nerves. When is realised that she must have Tourette’s ( they used to call it St. Vitus’ dance ), she madly denied it and said it was her nerves. Poor old mum. Miss you xx

One of the biggest music streamers on twitch has Tourette's too and he's been plastered all over twitch billboards and promotional stuff: MrGregles. along with of course sweet Anita. Someone as big as Billie is nice to know, but as far as i know most music artists and creatives have some sort of neurodivergency or mental illness they have to cope with.

I was diagnosed in 6th grade. My parents didn’t know what my future would look like with this disorder but I got my masters and have a family of my own now. It’s an extremely challenging disorder but doesn’t mean you can’t have a great life!

I have very very few ticks, they came and went over the years, and they occur rarely now, but I still have them and am aware of them, but I just mostly notice after they happen that I just had one.

My mum repressed hers quite heavily around my father - she was scared of him as we all were. She suppressed them in public too, but she could never suppress them completely. Without suppressing them, she would be quite loud with her voice, and bashing bench tops, the wall, and me as I walked by lol. It used to drive me nuts it really did. And I felt terrible for that too. I wish they had known more about it back then. My mum could laugh at herself. She was quite ocd as well - everything had to be in threes. Even if she dropped something and it smashed, she would have to pick it up twice more to drop it again. I really loved my mum. I wish she hadn’t smoked and she would still be alive. Smoking helped her tics.

I'm actually really confused at the moment because I sort of do what billie did in this video but more still, (I've been doing this since I was young) like sometimes I have to open my mouth really wide and slightly slanted to the side for a few seconds in a way stretching my jaw but if I don't I become really uncomfortable and sometimes I hurt my jaw because of it any advice please let me know also if I'm just talking rubbish and being offensive feel free to say!!!

@@LuHanmore I would mention this to your doc. What you're describing sounds like a milder motor tic. When they are milder they can go undiagnosed. I don't think you're being rubbish at all.

He’s had this Netflix talk show and beard for a while.

I did not recognize him, he seems quite nice and laid-back here.

Letterman's always been a better interviewer and thinker than a comedian. I always thought the Late Night talk show format got in his way because it forced a clearly troubled man to cram in jokes and be funny, rush his guests through interviews (that most of the time were just promotional tours) to get to the next item/guest on the itinerary, chase trends/watercooler news, and plug products.

As someone with tics, you sometimes can’t even really suppress it. You can try really hard but it just makes your brain more eager to let it out. You put it really well in calling it an extremely psychologically exhausting disorder.

It’s hard to control because you’re not supposed to try and suppress them. Suppressing it makes it worse

She actually mentioned it in her interview on Ellen in 2019 I believe. Also, you see her tiks more in her doc.

She said that she suppress her tics until the interviewer asks a question because then the camera won't be on her as she tics. People first started noticing her tics (and she quickly confirmed that she had Tourette's) in 2018 when she was 16 and an unedited interview was posted. Almost all videos are edited to cut out questions or pauses, so this was less common with a 10 minute interview that had her on screen the entire time. Fans noticed that she'd turn her neck to the side, roll her eyes in odd ways, or raise her eyebrow repeatedly.

There are older interviews from years ago where she tics, but I always found most of them were pretty subtle...like shaking her head, raising an eyebrow, subtle facial expression changes, etc. You can also suppress tics for a while, but they come out eventually either while in private or during breaks in between etc

I remember when she dropped that first music video and she did like a BTS thing and she ticked the whole way through. So i admired her for being 1.) Only like 16 and sharing her story and 2.) Because she was open. I've got so many mental health problems from trauma that idk how I made I through school so when she started talking it was like "oooooo so my thoughts/feelings aren't unusual the church just wants me to believe I'm crazy". Sorry but you can't pray away trauma you just can't. Not my kind at least.

Completely. If we expect others to know (mind-read) what is going on with us...and then every other person, with their own idiosyncrasies, expects that of others too, it's not realistic. It also tends towards egocentricity. It's up to the person offended (for whatever reason) to not take things as personally (which involves questioning one's narratives etc) and to advocate for oneself. Communicate needs, boundaries and clearly and calmly state them. Breathe and move on. Not one of us has it all figured out about others...so we can't expect others to have it figured out regarding our unique realms either. Connection happens through vulnerability, sharing, openness. Disconnection happens through being easily offended, assuming, personalizing etc. If we want people in our corner, we need to chose things that encourage connection.
