@@rexstil Best❓ Best what...technical chops, groundbreaking virtuosity, a game changing, genre defining genius, a charming, heart warming icon. Or the FATHER of it all, even before Duke...the man who laid it all out there, setting the standard & example for everybody. Even the great Miles Davis admitted that Louis said it ALL, before any of us! Scholarly, former young lions like Wynton know the score...he'll tell you who The Man is. Sure, Trane's got a few of those covered and then there's Diz's blinding, Be-Bop mastery, bringing the Latin connection & so many other greats, but when the dust finally settles, there's only one. The general public mostly know him as the gravelly voiced charmer, but his horn is the beacon on the battlefront, that blazed through the frontier and eras...from it's Storyville birthplace and Buddy Bolden, past King Oliver, to New York & the World! 🌐

Makes me wonder how these wonderful and talented artists felt having to perform under segregation. Having to go through back doors and not being able to eat at restaurants and stay in hotels then to add insult to injury, being ripped off by record companies. Strong and brave people.

They were strong and brave...and talented. I remember an interview with Lionel Hampton where the interviewer asked him wasn't it awful that he had to stay in a black hotel when the rest of Benny Goodman's orchestra didn't. He just smiled and said, "You don't understand, that's just the way it was back then." I realize it's easy for it to seem like I'm downplaying it, because I was born white and always will be, but sometimes I think we dwell too much on the faults of the past when we should just be grateful for the music. I'm grateful for the music of the all black orchestras like Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Not because of the segregation, but because of the music those artists produced.

I hear you, JR. I think I could have worded that differently. It took me most of my life to realize I can't put myself in a black man's shoes. In the nineties I remember having dinner with a friend in Dallas, visited with he and his family, and when I went out the front door I realized....it really hit me....that I was white. That what my friend and his family still faced every day, I could just get in my car and drive away from. But I still dream that we can get to Dr King's dream, where we see each other's character, and not the color of our skin.

Sometimes I'm sometime struck by how Portuguese speakers, when they make a comment on RU-vid in their first language, are really only understood by people from Brazil (and 12m elsewhere in the world). It has to suck, at least a little bit, to speak the only language of the former world powers that's understood by so very few people. While I'd love to speak a few languages fluently, I'm glad my first language is understood by 75%+ of the total population of people in this world.

She sang with the Duke, she sang with Basie, she sang with Shaw, but there wasn’t any musician she admired more than Satch. Lady Day thought of herself as a musician foremost, and like every single jazz musician on every single instrument, even vocals, that followed him, she wouldn’t have made the magic she made if it weren’t for him. Louis’ shadow was immense. Still is.

Music has yet to evolve past Louis Armstrong. He is a fundamental part of modern day music. To the point where I doubt any modern day musician isn’t influenced by him directly or indirectly. It’s almost a GUARANTEE that their influences involved Pops. Example-Louis Armstrong> John Entwhistle > Flea.

I just discovered your father today when I bought five of his records at an estate sale. Wonderful music, I know you're very proud of his art.

If any person wants inspiration, mentors or people to emulate, look no further than the people who brought us Jazz and Blues. Their lives were condemned to poverty, discrimination, record producers taking advantage of their position,n and people owing them money. These people faced every unimaginable obstacle placed before them. Read their life stories and play their music, you will hear the feeling of every inner feeling a person can have. Take no notice of the feeble, shallow and self-absorbed Hollywood hypocrites. Look to these people for honesty, and inspiration. You will never go wrong. UK
