Jazz vocalist Billie Holiday was born in 1915 in Philadelphia. Considered one of the best jazz vocalists of all time, Holiday had a thriving career as a jazz singer for many years before she lost her battle with substance abuse. Also known as Lady Day, her autobiography was made into the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues. In 2000, Billie Holiday was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. #Biography

Her best friend, talented saxophonist Lester Young, died about a few months before her (also too young) - she then said "I'll be next". The saddest thing was that she was right.

I really would LOVE to see more of these short (under 4 minutes) biographies on historical & cultural figures. In my history class biographies longer than that are simply too long to use most of the time. Thanks.

Good singers have either a good sense of pitch or a good sense of rhythm.............GREAT singers have them both! She did not have the range that our culture commensurate with greatness but she sang in the way as did many jazz instrumentalists did with her voice. She revolutionized "pop singing" the way she improvised her songs. Every singer behind her owes her a debt of gratitude. She changed the way songs are sung.

Yes she made the vocalist as important as the band. She was brilliant and influenced nearly every vocalist that came behind her with her timing and phrasing.

Her mama had her prostituting right along with her at very early age& she beat the odds& made something of her life ppl on here arguing she wasnt a prostitute she wrote it in her book okay?& one of her boyfreinds started her smoking opium way back it wasnt heroin at first. None of this matters to me bc she was a real cool lady ive listened to her interviews& she had a gift from God w that VOICE! So lets take her advice& dont talk about her when shes gone!!! Respect... Much love to LADY DAY!!!

she was not a prostitute. thats not true. The white band that she traveled with throughout the south introduced her to heroin. To ease the shock, and anger she felt when she saw the black bodies hanging in the trees, she wtote Strange fruit after witnesses such violence, when she had to stay hidden on the bus, when the kkk approached, when she had to use the bathroom, she had to hide on the side of the road. They told her heroin would make her feel better.The band used heroin, and introduced her to it. She was arrested over, and over for its use, but they weren't. Racism, drugs, and frustration killed this great songtress.

Rap doesn't suck it's just different genre different voice of expression not all blues is foo not all music is good ughhhhh ignorant to say rap sucks I'm not a fan of country but I love certain groups and artists depending on lyrics and song arrangement I guess rap sucks it's easy to say rap and country suck cause they are strong music genres but only dumb people who don't know music claims a whole genre is bad
