Earlier this summer I was asked to come pick up a batch of records that was slated to head to the dump. The owner had them all his life but was moving to Phoenix, AZ, couldn't take them with him and nobody in his family was interested in them.
So I made the drive out and took a look. I couldn't even believe this was in there. I told him what he had (plus a couple of Bessie Smith records and another Billie Holiday on Decca) but he just smiled and told me he was glad they were going to someone who would appreciate them. I sure will, and now so can you!
This is the song of the century right here. Standing in front of this old player and hearing Holiday's voice come through was a visceral experience. You can literally feel every word. The imagery is so vivid and the feeling of fear, sadness, and helplessness is... well... you probably get it or you wouldn't be here watching this.
