Billie Holiday signed with Decca Records in the fall of 1944 and quickly went to the recording studio on 50 West 57th Street in New York City to cut some sides. On her second recording date on November 8th, 1944 she recorded her first versions of her song "Don't Explain", Leonard Bernstein's "Big Stuff" from the musical Fancy Free and "That Ole Devil Called Love". While the former songs' alternate takes have been widely available on box sets such as Billie Holiday: The Complete Decca Recordings, "That Ole Devil Called Love" has been released sparsely on albums long out of print and not readily available to listen to.
"That Ole Devil Called Love" would go on to be the B-side of Billie Holiday's first single (and hit) for Decca, "Lover Man", which was released in the spring of 1945. Here it is, I hope you all enjoy!
