Study creative melody making and harmonies as well as some slick production ideas by working through Green Day's 21 Guns! Billie Joe Armstrong delivers a fantastic, yet straight forward performance that leaves lots of room for the arrangement.
The subtleties in the recording techniques and the vocal performance work together to serve the 'less is more' value system and... It's just a great song!

While it's clear there's lots of pitch correction here, if you've listened to Green Day live performances or albums from before pitch correction existed you'll know that Billie Joe has great pitch. I think his singing ability is a huge reason Green Day became so much bigger than other punk rock bands of their era. Granted, the catchy melodies don't hurt either.

There's always a difference of a singer using pitch correction for the sound to evolve the sound and a singer using pitch correction coz they're shit at singing

I think the reason why GD got so big is because of his voice, just like the way it is, this configuration of things in your throat what make you sound exactly as you are only person in the world. so, the people who are born in this era with this voice that sounds good it always sounds good, like even if they try even if they talk not singing it also sounds good jaja

Billie is one of my main inspirations, he has a crystal clear voice which I really like. I followed his stuff for a long time and I'm really surprised that you immediately noticed that he is "anti-nasal" and he cuts off nasal resonance with his soft palate. You sure are a professional! Great analysis.

This is a great example of how you can analyse every aspect of what’s happening & technically do everything right but there’s something going on that can’t be defined, it can’t be taught & everyone has they’re own unique version of it. It’s electric, it’s lightning in a bottle. You can call it talent but I like to think it’s the art of telling a story & the narrative that holds the impact of the performers ability to keep your attention. Substance = impact of expression. Just tell your own stories, be honest even if it hurts people & don’t over analyse everything.

I haven't visited in a while, but good to see ya again lol, I can say I have DRASTICALLY improved my voice by just watching your tips and training, I now do karaoke regularly (something I would never do before) and get applause. It's all about not being afraid to sound like a dying cat (my neighbors love me) but just finding those breaking points, or just going "what if I do THIS..." and trying something, you'll see how your voice flexes, the ranges, the power, the dynamics you're capable of. That's why I love your training, it's outside the box and open-ended. Love ya as always. 😎

Great video and lesson. I'll say though, as someone who started playing, singing, and writing songs in 94' specifically because of Green Day, one can mark a huge sea change between anything American Idiot and before vs anything after American idiot. Billy and the band just simply got tamer. Billy decided he wanted to learn how to "sing" sing. I get it. But it changed the band's sound and direction.

What an interesting video! First off, I'm not in the slightest a professional 😂 just an average music lover, I don't play an instrument or have talent to sing...That's why I'm kinda nervous to write something dumb now (😅) but I always thought that Billie sounds 'nasal' / as if his nose is clogged. In some songs significantly more than others... Especially in Basket Case. If I understood correctly (I'm not a native speaker ) he does this on purpose? 😰 I always thought that's just the way his voice is and found it kinda 'cute' 😳

If not, give them a try! Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band, but singer Floor is Dutch. She has one of the best female voices in metal today. She is a vocal coach herself and can sing with an operatic approach, pop, rock and even grunting. Their live performances are epic. Listen to the song Ghost Love Score, there is a lot for you to analyse. It was recorded at Wacken 2013, in front of 82 000 people. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JYjIlHWBAVo.html
