I actually started THIS channel to do what you are discussing at around 56:00 I would like to share my idea, outline, strategy, and curriculum to creating the "How to Create" material
One thing Jack Conte forgot to mention about Patreon that is a nice feature if you ever wanna take a break for a month or longer but don't wanna feel like you're taking people's money without posting anything new is stopping the billing cycle for the next month. Of course, you can explain yourself to your audience and see how they feel about it before and decide if it's necessary, but it's nice to know that a feature like that exists.
Yes, I do wish we could do half months because it's a lot to give up entire months income when you just needed two weeks off. But still nice to have and I understand why it would be hard to do half months off.
Interestingly, The Consouls (they do VGM jazz) told their fans in December that they were taking a break from streaming (not a break from Patreon) for January, and mentioned that they were aware that some of their subscribers might take a break too if there wasn't any content for that month so that's why they were letting us know. It was surprising for me to hear that but then I realised that being on Patreon , TwitchTV and Discord etc the band is really connected with fans, many of whom are quite young (I'm not so young!). The flexibility of the monthly option works for both creators and subscribers it seems.
Agree - this channel it just soo great, my channel has been really inspired by their content tbh. It's just crazy how they give such a deep insight into the creator economy. I really wonder how they make these simple podcasts so engaging, though, it's rare to see RU-vidrs keeping us watching for so long. Do you have any idea?
Watching this on mobile while adding my Patreon end screen on computer feels like a win :) ps. me and my wife are crazy coffee nerds. If she had to choose me or coffee I would probably lose. Going to enjoy the rest of the episode now, bye
Hey guys, been a quiet supporter & watcher of your channel for a while now. But these conversations are GOLD for us content creators. I appreciate you guys and these conversations/videos so much! The wisdom, love, and care you guys have for Creators is next level. Just want to say THANK YOU!
Hey it’s the great Nolan Molt don’t I know you from somewhere a little RU-vid channel called THINK MEDIA or something like that ;) ;) Well good to see you here and take care have a wonderful day evening or night.
Agreed, i'm actually kinda interested in it. Usually sponsored product ads are just something i sit through to support the creator and every once in a blue moon i see one that actually catches my attention as a product i might buy. This coffee one is now the latest one where i might actually make a purchase. it looks like a cool futuristic K-Cup/instant coffee but higher quality.

It takes a humble dude to ask for help when you know something isn't aligned with your passion, but needs to succeed. Inspiring story Jack and great storytelling Colin and Samir!

LETSGOOOO Pomplamoose was the first "creator" that I started following back in like 2011 and watching Jack's career develop has been so inspiring. Really needed something like this right now, thank you
I love you guys. You have inspired to finally give social media a shot at the start of this year. I began on Twitter using content to drive affiliate advertising. And some TikTok content. Thank you guys so much! I've learned so much. I'm very excited to one day invest in Patreon as long as RU-vid clubs doesn't take over.

Jack Conte is one of the most important figures of our time! I’m surprised the title of this video doesn’t say “Patreon CEO”, I thought that would get people more interested? Great video!
Very very interesting, especially the last third which really resonated with me. I'm sure you're not in need of video ideas but here's my struggle of the day/week/month/year if you'd like to go deeper. I'm at a point where I need to define the limit of my canvas and have someone checking that I don't go outside of it. However, I feel like by doing so it will become a heartless production. Videos that you create one after another that has no soul. It would not be craft anymore but an industry. It's a complete change of perspective. Is the grass on the other side still tasty? What do you lose? I hope what I mean is clear enough. Thanks!

Really insightful and interesting interview. When I get back to putting out one song a week I will definitely try out patreon for myself. Seeing as the cost of leasing one beat is around 30$ and I put out one song each week which accumulates to a couple of cents each month it's really not a safe way to keep going. I got some loyal people in my community though that I think would support a patreon with 1-5 dollars a month. I will probably not make profit off it, but it's a great way for a musician like my self to keep being able to put his art out there. Much love

This is the best Videos I have ever watched as a creator to hear that we all have the same thoughts, dreams & fears but we are a community of people changing the world as we create by sharing the dream of living life to the fullest doing what we love. Thank You for keeping the dream a live

I remember 5 or 6 years ago where even having a sponsor would have creators getting bad looks from their audience, god forbid they ask them for money. Then the adpocalypse happened. Now Patreon is not only encouraged, it’s many if not most cases, it’s essential for creators. Crazy how the online creator space has changed so much in less than 5 years

The canvas metaphor is exactly how I think about my business career and how my team work. And then there is a creator side of me that has to follow the same framework. This is the cleanest expression of that mindset that I’ve heard in a while!
Just going to throw this out here, I love how you guys find your niche and what you guys are good at! I enjoy watching your videos I seen the Conservancy but yet how are you guys add new tricks to the trade. I think you need a bush in your background LOL need more Color! Keep up the great work!

Hey Colin and Samir! Question for you: Why do you decide to post shorts on your main channel instead of posting them on a dedicated "shorts" channel? Do you find that RU-vid recommends your videos less if these shorter videos are lowering your watch time? Thanks guys!
@@TheJordanK I actually just watched that one! haha. They did talk about how its been really helping their channel but i'm super curious as to if theres any downsides they've experienced from not posting them on a designated shorts channel. Thanks Jordan, I appreciate your help though!
@@RyanWagget I don’t think anything bad comes out of getting people to you channel. They like your shorts, check out your channel, and now they see longer videos
@@Marcus96s well i’ve heard from other channels that it could hurt your average watch time bc a larger audience would be watching your super short 15sec videos. Because of this lower watch time, RU-vid would recommend your channel less. RU-vid would see it as “This channel makes tons of 20min videos but most their viewers only watch 15sec of their content”. BUT i’m also not sure how real this is haha
This is my first time seeing an interview with Jack, but I swear I have talked with him in person. He seems like such a sweet guy and I think we talked about creativity and finding what your creative talents can do in the world
After 2 months on Patreon, I can say that this is my future. For any creator that is thinking about jumping on the Patreon bandwagon, but has doubts. Just do it. Search me up on Patreon if you want to see that I'm not bullshitting.

I haven't been here since the beginning but I've watched every video of yours for probably 18 months and this one resonates with me personally more than most. Thanks for what you do
This was such an amazing interview. To hear about the inner workings of such an influential company in the creator space was refreshingly eye opening. Thank you Colin and Samir!

@@AlexsCreatorEconomy, I imagine it's due to their story telling process which they teach in their course. Structuring a story properly is, in my opinion, the key factor in whether your audience stays engaged.

Hey love the videos. I watch every single one that releases. I really think you should have a Description note that says when they apple podcast Video aligns with the youtube video. If I'm at home I watch videos on my second monitor while working and then I might have to drive someone where and trying to get that timing aligned is very frustrating. Example " 37:52 RU-vid video starts" Then i know im 30 minutes in I can pick up 67 Minutes etc...
What always puts a smile on my face is the fact that you two are able to bring so much quality to each episode and each one is so diverse when it comes to the insight and the lessons learned. Love it!

How did you not dive into what he said more at 5:00 that’s basically what your whole channel is in a nut shell. Would have loved to hear you guys elaborate more on how the “creative middle class” is more possible than ever, after he gave that stat 50% of people are earning under $10k on patron.
1:04:43 -- NAILED IT! "it's so important to I think get to a point where the creativity is fun and rewarding and you feel excited to wake up in the morning." - Jack Conte, Patreon.
Happy holidays. Pick me so I can give it to my wife 😄 Thanks for having Jack on. I love his musical groups and Patreon is groundbreaking for musicians/creators
If Jack Conte sees this: i read the "Getting things done" book you sent me and it seriously changed my life. I've never been so mentally clear before. Thank you ❤
YEAH COLIN AND SAMIR! I’m not a creator, but from watching your videos over the years I now brainstorm channel ideas all the time! I will definitely be setting up a channel sometime in the future because of your guys!
Hey! Could we get some videos of small creators. You focus a lot on those who have made it, but who do you think is going to make it big and why? Could we get some interviews of small creators? Their thoughts about creating even while it isn't sure if they are going to make it.
Guys, can you discuss what Business Insider just revealed about RU-vid Shorts? RU-vid has been secretly paying TikTokers and some RU-vid creators $50K to post shorts, which hasn't been disclosed, and since there are so many channels participating, I wonder if this money was taken directly out of the fund and that's why no one outside of this secret deal seems to be earning more than a couple bucks?
1:04:15 is so true. Creative teams will always do better. Teams are more likely to start creating and keep creating. Even if the team is just you and one other person. Like a spouse or family member. So what does that mean for all the creators who are alone and have no one to help them. You have to shrink your world. Simplify to the max. Dumb it down until its doable. The first thing a solo creator should make, is a creative system. When you have no one to help you, you have to make your friends. A good system will be your best friend. The only problem is that good creative systems are really hard to make. Which is why most creators (myself included) don't have one. And that's why ten percent of RU-vidrs get 90% of the views.
You should’ve spoke on how people like Lauren Southern and Sargon of Akkad were removed from Patreon for bullshit. Lauren Southern literally was treated under court as a corporation when she is a single fucking individual.

So i didn't know anything about Jack Conte before watching this. Maybe not monetarily or whatever, but morally, strategically, and intellectually i feel like Jack Conte is the CEO other tech/app/platform CEOs wish and think they are. Jack describing Patreon's big mistake from years ago is something no other big tech CEO would EVER do. They would deflect and not talk about something like that, and the fact that Jack answered that question, to the length he did, and with the honesty and really getting into WHY it was wrong. The self awareness when he was talking about his wealth too. Just wow, massive respect for this guy.
I'm probably more of a coffee nerd than ANYONE watching your channel. If anyone else has a La Marzocco Strada EP or an equivalent espresso machine in their kitchen OR has competed in the World Barista Championships... I'll delete my comment and eat a big piece of humble pie. :)
