In today's episode we are talking about some of the most petty real estate disputes that I have ever heard of. First, we start with a story about a billionaire who is accused of stealing sand from a public beach in Malibu. Then we get into a story about a "California Karen" who claimed part of a beach as her own in front of her beachfront mansion. And last we talk about a petty dispute between billionaires around a glass art sculpture outside of their beachfront properties.
I hope that you enjoy this video and if you have comments please leave them below! See you next video!

@@stenbak88 I live here too and I heard the same . But really, everyone of those people roped their spots there forever ago and I don’t blame them. The beach they roped off wasn’t wide, maybe just enough for a couple of lounge chairs, and frankly they needed a cushion around their homes. The way people using beaches here behave now, I would not be at all surprised if owners woke up one day to find strangers making coffee in their kitchen while waiting for the load of laundry they threw in the owners machines. I would not live on that beach at all under any circumstance. I live a thirty second walk from there, and I just can’t take it anymore as it is, so I’m moving. People using the beaches are the worst now. If you live here, you know.

A few years back a Wall Street currency trader wanted to expand his estate in New Jersey. He tried to buy public park land that abutted his property. The authority that ran the park told him that park land was not for sale. Not long after a hiker was walking a trail through the woods in the park only to find that the trail had been fenced off and tennis courts had been constructed. Puzzled by this the hiker made his way to the park police station and asked why the park had constructed tennis courts in the middle of the woods. This was news to the police who, being the inquisitive fellows that they are, investigated. As it turned out the wealthy currency trader had fenced off acres of park land, had most of the trees removed, had tennis courts constructed and was planning to construct a pool and pool house. The currency trader's lawyer claimed it was a 'survey error'. The currency trader paid to have the tennis courts removed and paid for the trees he destroyed without admitting any wrong doing. He did no jail time. That's what will happen here. Oopsie! Did I make a mistake? Here, let me paid for the sand. We're good now, right?

A similar thing happened in the Hamptons over a decade ago where a billionaire (one of the founders of Blackrock the world’s largest hedge fund) did not like the dunes that obstructed the view from his newly bought waterfront mansion. These dunes were a protected area under nature conservation rules. Well one weekend a bunch of heavy dozers pitched up and flattened the dunes. The local authority prosecuted him and he got a big fine and supposedly has to pay for a team of conservation experts to rebuild the former habitat. But the fine was a drop in the bucket for him and the dunes are no longer blocking his view (rebuilding will take generations if at all) and he does not give a proverbial about what he did. Zero morals. The story was covered in Vanity Fair.

There’s a billionaire in Massachusetts that did the same thing to his neighbors. Ernie Boch Jr. inherited the car empire his father started. He bought an old mansion that had most of its former land surrounding it turned into a middle class neighborhood. Boch wanted the land back to create the create the estate, build pools and a huge garage for his car collection. Some of the owners wouldn’t sell. One was also a car dealer, only much much smaller. First he started cutting down trees that affected only their property. And kept escalating from there. He had bright lights on all night and also blared music late at night. He’s also a musician with a band. This went on for a couple of years. They all ended up moving and Boch created his estate. He also built a mausoleum where he will be interned. It’s near the sidewalk and road with houses on the other side of the road.

This seems reasonable and would annoy sand guy in the right way by denying him a story. He couldn't brag to his friends; "look at that sand patch, cost me millions, fought the neighbors, the law, and won, see, there it is." This is like admiring your neighbor's lawn a few blocks away and then just taking it with a huge excavator, mid-day, while they were home watching.

Hmm, what if a billionaire actually builds a beach from nothing? Spending millions to basically dump tons of sand and maintain the erosion over the years, would it still be considered public? The moment he stops maintaining, that beach would likely be gone in a decade, so idk how it would work to consider it public if it can't even exist without the billionaire being there to build and maintain it.

Just speculation, but maybe the contractor is removing some sand to be able to install some large boulders and rocks as a surf break to stop the erosion. The sand would more than likely be used again in the surrounding area.It appears that he already had a concrete wall built because it looks new and the rocks would slow down the erosion against the wall. I couldn’t imagine someone, contractor or otherwise, doing work on the beach like that without some kind of permitting. I’ll reserve judgement until all the facts become known.

It’s fairly common for people with property near the beach to post signs saying private beach or private property. Another tactic is to put signage on a public access trail to the beach claiming that is private. Any alternative path to the beach may then be at such a distance as to discourage beach goers from visiting that section of the beach. Some property owners go further by fencing off the “private” portion of the beach. A property that claims to abut a private beach will have a higher value than a property that is next to a public beach. You can in California own a path to a public beach, and decide to forbid everyone from using that path. However, some claims to ownership are spurious, and could be challenged in court.

Not the same thing; ( but similiar), my Aunt & Uncles Neighbor has been building prohibited Seawalls on the Shoreline. These Sea Walls here in Hawaii cause massive erosion to the shoreline. This is killing the Reef, Sea Life, and rapidly eroding what beach & land separate the Sea from the actual Houses. In older Sea front homes, often the sewage was built in the yard on the Ocean Side of the property. Back when these homes were built; ( early 1900's forward), the land on the Sea side was a LOT bigger than now ( but due to uncontrollable erosion its shrinking rapidly). Building the Sewage system on the Ocean side of the land used to be no big deal. Now, each time there's a Storm or high Waves, more of the land is pulled into the Sea, pulling with it Sewage from the deep underground system;(Sanitary Sewer). This type of Waste system spills waste into the dirt.: Each time my Uncle's Neighbor builds a Sea wall, he's fined $50,000 by the State of Hawaii. The waves regularly bust down his silly wall, then he immediately rebuilds it. This is causing my family's historic Beach home to get closer & closer to the Ocean. Many homeowners are pretty wealthy in this area, especially those who own these shore front homes. Other Home owners also rebuild the Sea Walls, along this same stretch. The substantial fines are not enforcing the erosion/ Sea Wall problem on Oahu"s North Shore.😔

I doubt the guy having the house built knew anything about the sand dredging. That would come down to the contractor and those he hires.

The h*** with Gilligan's island theme. You go by yourself cement mixer, from Harbor freight, then you go to home depot, and you buy a couple dozen cinder blocks, you put the cinder blocks n the concrete mixer, and you've let it run all day long top off when needed. Perfectly legal neighbors can't do a thing about it

A truck load of sand cost a few hundred dollars a load. Cheaper and easier than doing what they did! Cost of labor and equipment is much more expensive and way more trouble!!!

Oh! No. If a billionaire will steal beach sand, that is only a “gsteway” crime and what will be next? Rocks?

The 'lady' with boundary jumpers had a defender who wrote that Teddy Roosevelt gave the previous property owner the land (beach) from 'some point' into the ocean. Haven't seen any more on that argument. That sounds interesting.

Beach lady- If I was the one she’s trying to get out she’d still be standing & fussing at me. She’d flip out hopefully.

Oh yeah, you have to get permits to install stuff like that and you need permission of any neighbor it affects.

You want sand from a river not from the beach, it has salt. Bad for concrete or your garden.
