‘Levi Stubbs Tears’ is the first single released from Bragg's third album Talking with the Taxman about Poetry in 1986. NME ranked the song at number 207 in their list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time in 2014. It’s a typically poignant paean to the power of music in the face of personal adversity beautifully performed here by Billy.
The Million Things That Never Happened' is out now on CD and Digitally. Buy on CD, stream now and pre-order the 12" vinyl LP to get it at the earliest available date BBragg.lnk.to/TMTTNH

Lyrics:
With the money from her accident
She bought herself a mobile home
So at least she could get some enjoyment
Out of being alone
No one could say that she was left up on the shelf
It's you and me against the World kid she mumbled to herself
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi Stubbs' tears run down his face
She ran away from home on her mother's best coat
She was married before she was even entitled to vote
And her husband was one of those blokes
The sort that only laughs at his own jokes
The sort a war takes away
And when there wasn't a war he left anyway
Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong
Are here to make everything right that's wrong
Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too
Are here to make it all okay with you
One dark night he came home from the sea
And put a hole in her body where no hole should be
It hurt her more to see him walking out the door
And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the floor
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
She takes off the Four Tops tape and puts it back in its case
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi Stubbs' tears

I saw this video once on a telly in 1987, instantly fell in love with it, and then I spent next 6 years trying to find an album with it, which was not an easy task in socialist Yugoslavia. I eventually did find it in Italy in a small record store in Bologna. Now, almost 35 years later, I still love it like the first time I heard it.

I know you gotta move on, grow your repertoire, collaborate with folks-but I still cherish these early solo songs the most. Not to flatter you with outrageous praise, but you can acknowledge Dylan’s work with the Band as part of his creative peak…and still recognize that it was those first 3-4 “urban troubadour” records that made him what he was, and what made such a deep impression on music and culture. This is your most impactful work, always will be.

This spoke to me as a 15 year old boy growing up in the North East of Ireland in the 80s. I’m 50 now and like to turn the lights out, lie down and let this invade my soul.

I bought 'Talking' as soon as it hit the shops, and this song stunned me, moved me to tears. Here we are, so many years later, and it moves me still.

One of the greatest lyrical songs ever

The lyrics are amazing right out of the gate "With the money from her accident. She bought herself a mobile home. So at least she could get some enjoyment. Out of being alone." That opens enough loose ends to write a novel and somehow Billy Bragg ties it together in under 3 minutes.

Every bit as emotional and powerful as a Four Tops song featuring the lead vocals of the legendary Levi Stubbs himself

My mum founded and ran what used to be called a battered wives home back in the early 1970's, grew up being sadly aware of what men can do, everything about this song reminds me of the women my mum used to help sadly

Listening to this repeatedly to try and make myself cry proof before seeing Billy Bragg live this week. Its not working. Over 30 years of listening and it still gets me in the heart.

I lost my baby a year and a half after I had my human baby. That Billy Bragg song, “When the world falls apart, some things stay in place,” always felt like it was about him. He was my one thing that always stayed in place no matter how bad things got. I miss him so freaking much.

I love this song so much. The lyrics are so perfect, such great turns of phrase. “He was one of those blokes that war takes away/when there wasn’t a war, he left anyway”…goosebumps
