The best concert of my life was at Duke Cameron Indoor Stadium about 1968ish and seeing Billy with 'Dreams'. It was a last minute concert where they substituted for Janis Joplin who was snowed-in somewhere. We heard about it on the Duke FM college station and the 'interesting' players in the band. We sat on the gym floor right in front of the bandstand which was only a couple of feet off the floor. The concert started about 11pm. All I can say (as an inspiring drummer of 15 at the time) is that Billy was the most powerful drummer I'd ever seen in my life...still so. My god, he AND the entire band was awesome. Sticks were snapping and flying off the stage. They also took an intermission where they just hung out at the stage and all my bandmates were able to chew the fat with 'em (including the Brecker Brothers and Will Lee ). Oh man, what a night! Listen to the Dreams LP 'Dreams'...(New York, 15 Miles To Provo, Devil Lady)....incredible!

After Billy came on the scene, the drumming world completely changed. All of a sudden, things that appeared impossible became possible. The gauntlet had been thrown down and you were challenged to meet that degree of excellence, to what ever level you could attain.

Absolutely! Billy is my greatest inspiration and I am still trying to comprehend some of the things he does on the kit!

I got to meet him at our drum corps practice for Blue Devils in 1978. I had a broken hand so wasn't practicing that day and asked him tons of questions. Our top snare drummer played his solo and he was impressed. Now that guy is the percussion director (Scott Johnson)

In 1989 Billy Cobham did a clinic in Albany, NY when I was 14... I was a young rock drummer with a very limited musical scope. The extent of my jazz knowledge was a couple records my mom had: Brubeck, etc. Stuff every suburban household has at least one of. That night changed everything. I went with another drummer friend and we were stunned. The ambidextrous playing was only the beginning... he did a Q&A afterwards and it taught me a great many things. Thank you BILLY COBHAM! I think my motivation advanced about 5 years in one night.

So entertaining and informative! BC has been my hero since I first heard him on tape (Birds of fire with Mahavishnu Orchestra on cassette) in 1975. He is the Bill (namesake!) Cosby in the drum business. Unbelievable energy, groove and chops in everything he does. I wish I have some of his vitality at 70 years plus!

I Love Billy Cobham . Forever thankful for his funkiness . And larger than Life Fills , if its just on the snare or over six Toms . First time i heard his music was in Spain on a camping ground and a DJ played music for us Teenagers . And he played from the B.C. album . Mendocino, Dana, The Lonely Bull etc. I convinced the DJ to lend me the Cassette and i heard Bring up the Houselights , where billy is having a lotta fun chatting with George Duke .... a LONG LOST Friend :-). over a relaxed but intense Funk Groove . CHECK it out

In 1973, just after the Mahavishnu Orchestra released 'Birds of Fire', CTI arranger Don Sebesky released an all-star studded album called 'Giant Box' on which the first track was the Mahavishnu tune "Birds of Fire" as part of a medley with Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite". Billy Cobham plays out of his mind on this must-hear track especially during his brief solo just after the 8-minute mark. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zc6sZVhdOXw.html
