I wanna say thanks to Billy for this song. My daughter sent it to me 3 years ago and I was messing up bad with drugs. This song woke me up and changed my life forever. God bless you and I thank you for this song. I been sober for 2 years and I owe it to my daughter and you Mr Currington.

my Dad may be an alcoholic but he still held down two jobs to get us by when my mama left when I was a baby. Not every alcoholic is a bad person or abusive. He still taught me to respect my elders and hold my own in this world. Granted it took a turn for the worst when his dad died and I've been in the hospital sitting with him several times due to it almost killing him but is a good man regardless he just doesn't know how else to handle what HE'S had to go through. Alcoholics have their own stories too. And he means the world to me and idk what I would do without him. Love you Daddy!

Understatement of the century. I remember buying a dozen cd singles for this song for their jewel cases because they were like 50 cents each thus it was cheaper to buy these than new cases to replace my broken ones. I played the song and have loved it every since. Best way to lead is by example.

When I see my son start becoming reserved and not laughing like a child should, this song always reminds me to straighten up. I don't drink but a couple beers a year, but this song doesn't necessarily have to be about being drunk. As parents we all need a reminder to walk a little straighter.

There are little eyes upon you and they're watching night and day. There are little ears that quickly take in every word you say. There are little hands all eager to do anything you do; And a little boy who's dreaming of the day he'll be like you. You're the little fellow's idol, you're the wisest of the wise. In his little mind about you no suspicions ever rise. He believes in you devoutly, holds all you say and do; He will say and do, in your way when he's grown up just like you. There's a wide-eyed little fellow who believes you're always right; and his eyes are always opened, and he watches day and night. You are setting an example every day in all you do; For the little boy who's waiting to grow up to be just like you.

My dad was an alcoholic all my life. A lot of rehabs and sober homes but never got him off it. I remember we were watching this video and when the dad gave him a pocket watch he went and got me the pocket watch he always carried around. I was maybe 7 or 8 when that happened and only got a few more years with him after. It’ll be 10 years since he passed this September. Still have that pocket watch in my truck.

its astounding how often parents forget that every moment someone is watching them. Not judging them per say, but watching and looking for guidance down the road call life. All our actions are noticed and they in one way or another influence someone else. Either negative or good someone is following in your footsteps be it your children, your friends, or a stranger that passes you by. Know that those who strive for the stars may never notice the light they shine on others, but the good you do will be noticed whether or not you do it. But unfortunately any little thing you might do for whatever reason if its seen as bad more often then not people will pick up on that quicker than the good. Because humanity is always looking for some way to destroy each other or bring them down a notch.

I use to blast this song when I was about 10. I'd go see my dad for a weekend visitation, and I played this on guitar for him. (at the age of 10). he chose beer over his children. I love him so much, and always will. but he's not a good man. I haven't seen him in 8 years. if he had been in my life, I might not have got raped by his drinking buddy, my brother might not have drowned when he was 4, and I would have someone to call dad. occasionally, I go over to the home I grew up [my moms house] to do yard work, and I'll find an old empty Busch beer can in the woods. I always think of him, and this song plays in my head. if your out their daddy.. I love you, and always have. I forgive you. I only hope your doing well, and have managed to kick the can. if you haven't, I still love you. perhaps you'll find peace in the next life.

Thank you so much for your comment I wish from the bottom of my heart that my son will forgive and think about the good deed that he did and love his son with all his heart. Sometimes he could not the love and caring the way that his heart wants to. I wish my son would read your comments and forgive him. We cannot deleted the bad memories but we’re all can recognize the great part of Father. No one meant to be a bad parent. We can’t go back to correct our past but as a mom that’s still alive I will do my best each day no one knows we will see tomorrow. I always pray for my son to forgive his dad. Mother that s always be right here for her son to come around.

This song really shows what it's like living with an alcoholic. My stepfather is an alcoholic, and even though he has made many mistakes I have never stopped loving him. He stopped drinking about a year ago, and by the Grace of God he's stayed sober. I think a real turning point for him was when I came home about two years ago and he was lying, unconscious, on the back porch. I had to drag him inside and give him water until he recovered. It was hot outside and he was drunk, and passed out on the stairs. He was there for three hours before I got home. Something about having your 13 year old stepdaughter drag you inside tends to show you that you need to change. It took several tries, and many nights shivering under the blankets, hoping against hope that He would make it till morning alive, but he's now one year sober. Through all that, we still love him and I know he loves us. to all the alcoholics that think you can't get sober, you can. Don't let alcohol be the reason your life ends too soon!

SuperWhoLock14 amazing that your dad sobered up. Even when I was 12 and carried him inside with neighbor help, my dad still drinks. He's made promises to drink less or even quit but my faith in him has pretty much dried up because I'm 23 now and all I hear are empty promises. I love him, and he's the only dad I've ever known. But He's shown me what not to do, what not to look for in a partner for life.

My son stood up to his abusive father after 14 yrs of taking more than any child should. (He was protecting myself & his lil sister). Though his father didn’t drink all the time, it was enough. More than enough. And of course he had an abusive father too. But my son ... I was so proud of him going chest to chest w him, telling him HE HAD ENOUGH. He said to his father the exact same words he’d heard so many times before: “If you ever touch me or my sister or hurt Mom again, I WILL beat YOU within an inch of your life. You always said you were bigger, meaner, tougher than me but truth is you’re NOTHING! Go ahead dad, bring it on”! ✋🤚My son said, shoving his chest toward his father. (I had been extremely ill w Lupus since my pregnancies but now miraculously in remission). His dad turned around & left, FOREVER! We just finished a 3 year divorce which he fought me for custody! (this guy is a great actor, would win an academy award). He APPEALED our divorce to the Supreme COURT & I just won 3 weeks ago. Now I am trying to help my teens.

When I first heard the song, I gasped for breath. I wondered if whoever wrote the song heading on me personally, and had known my dad. I also waited by the door for him to come home. He would also passed me bye go straight to the refrigerator, grab his bottle and sit down in the chair. He pretty much disappeared after that. He was there, physically, but not mentally or emotionally. My entire childhood was this way. I was never able to get close to him. I was the oldest, and my brother and sister halfway through their childhood got to know him sober. Because eventually he did quit drinking. We get along and I think you trying to make up for lost time. I don’t hold a grudge and I let him try to make up for it. At least he quit drinking. And I’m proud for that because so many don’t I know this because I’m a hospice nurse. I see many people dying of cirrhosis.

My daddy was an alcoholic all my life, but he still was someone i admired greatly. He was there when i graduated high school, and university, he walked me down the aisle when i got married. He was there when i had my two children and when my daughter had two boys. I never drank when raising my kids. He passed away two yrs ago and it completely broke my heart. Later in life he became one of my greatest teachers and best friends. I hated yhe alcohol but loved my daddy very much.

This song hits me on so many levels. My daddy isn't completely in my life. I love him so so much but he's never really been a father figure to me. He missed my high school graduation & didn't wanna be at my wedding (he never said it but I could tell). We barely speak now & it hurts me. When I have children I'll never treat them that way. Daddy I love you, nothing will ever change that. I know we'll never have that close bond & I'll never be a daddy's girl (even though I'm your only daughter). It kills me knowing that, but I guess we were never meant to be close. I'm sorry.

I proud of the fact my mom pulled me away from this type of life when I was only 2. Lord only knows where I would be and what I would be doing. I am thankful to this day for the 22 years i got to call the man she remarried my Dad. He helped me become Who i am today. Even though I was an angry teenager and still fight with these anger issues. I put that man through a lot but I am thankful he didn't stop loving me. I love you daddy continue to lead me from heaven.
