Such a powerful ending. Would have loved if Mrs. Wilkinson was there at the end to watch him too. If it wasn't for her he may never have even got into dancing. It would have been a nice full circle. Although I suppose it was more powerful to have his father there, showing his complete acceptance and pride for his son.
It was a timing issue, this scene wasn't in the original scrip and after the movie was edited they realized it needed another scene but when they called her she was out of the country working on another movie and couldn't get back. But I agree it would have been better if she was there.
@@hamie58 I`m sorry i do not agree it would have bin nice if she could see it but his father thiks of his wife and how proud and happy she woukd have been
Well, I for one think it would be great if she had been there. I don’t think she’d have missed it for anything other than that hand-in-the-garbage-disposal event earlier in the day. 😟
I am overwhelmed by how Billy's dad rises with emotions as his son reaches his climax of glory and the dad discovers the Peak of genuine fatherhood. It destroyed me with tears. Simply divine
I love the symmetry in this film. The father emerges from below the earth - urged on by his elder son - up escalator - contrasted with the miners in the lift being transported under the earth. Both son and father are released out of struggle. darkness and pain into light and life. The sheer power of this film monumental.
I love how all the dancers rush out in excitement to look on as Billy comes out for his part and his fathers expression as Billy jumps. Movies like this aren't my thing just kept hearing about it so much so decided to see what all the talk was about and I watched this movie numerous times since. Really good Movie.
Maggie Chau The father had grown up in a culture where it was the man that provided for his family, and did so in a physically challenging way. Thatcher put the miners into poverty and the necessary strike emasculated them. ThE father was struggling with his own self worth and wanted the best for his son but couldn’t see it happening through ballet. His community recognised the shining light of talent born in the stark, painful reality of their lives and helped him escape.
You can just tell his maturity and power from his physique, his prowess from his stance. We somehow know that he hasn’t become a mediocre dancer. And the father’s reaction is just pure excellence.
Bloody fantastic film. I love swan lake. I’ve been to a few “swan lake” ballets but the ending of this, is just magical. The music is so powerful, and the dancing is superb. Watching his father tear up, and gasp when his son makes his appearance, it gets me every time..
I love ballet and I've seen a few different international companies perform it over the years, always blows me away. I saw Billy Elliot live in Sydney twice it was brilliant, and watch the movie once a year and I always cry when the dad nearly breaks the picket line so he can send Billy for lessons.
A father's great sacrifice fully repayed. Extraordinary finale. So emotional and commovating. It teaches us the lesson of what family pride is all about. A perfect example of what Parents love can transmit to you. TIMELESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, try not to cry.... Very Profound.
You can almost feel his father losing his breath seeing his son jumped like that. I never get tired of watching this scene. Crying yet again. I love this movie
Beautiful end to a brilliant film. I read in one of the comments here that this ending was done at the last minute and Julie Walters was committed elsewhere and couldn't appear. My lovely late mother used to say that Julie should have been there, I used to patiently 'correct' her by saying that her absence shows that nothing in life is EVER perfect. I wish she was still around so I could tell her she was right all along, that the producers wanted Julie in but she couldn't make it ! BTW - the T Rex music somehow fits wonderfully perfectly all through the film.
This is an actual performance, not just a bit for the movie. The dancer is Adam Cooper, star performer of Matthew Bourne’s 1997 all male version of Swan Lake, performed by the Royal Ballet in London.
I watched this movie three times, so charming it is. And every time my breath was taken away by the final scene..Dream came true. Raised in the best classical traditions of Russian Ballet, I find this version of "Swan Lake"amusing and funny, but regardless, Adam Cooper is a true super star , artistic, atletic and masculine at the same time! There is so much dignity and style in him. A gentleman, indeed.
Qué maravillosa película, la he visto muchas veces y no me canso de mirarla... Es conmovedor cómo el papá trae el llanto a flor de piel y hasta el rudo hermano de Billy no puede ocultar su emoción!
@Anadance No! that's the whole point, it's just perfect the way it is in my opinion, seeing his father's face after all the sacrifice he has made for his son, fullfilling hs dead wifes wishes aswell, it's heartbreakingly wonderful. It's almost as if that performance is just for him and his father and nobody else, it's an absolutely wonderful ending.
One of the best British films ever. The acting is so good. I've tried to find faults in it. But it's hard to find faults when you're sitting crying like a big girl..lol.
Ah - the wonderful, wonderful Adam Cooper. I saw Matthew Bourne's production of Swan Lake (from which this excerpt is taken) in London in the 1990's with Adam Cooper as lead and it was the most fabulous and memorable production of anything I've ever seen. Everything about it was perfect - the set, the dancers, the choreography, the amazing and innovative costumes and, of course, Tchaikovsky's music. It was a perfect ending to Billy Elliot.
