Angelina Jordan introduces Michael Jackson to Dave Brubeck. Brilliant arrangement. Perfect vocal execution. Stellar. This young woman is a complete musical artist at 15.

I'll go with Ginger on this one...I am 78, and the 80's pop era was something I did not embrace, and that includes MJ. So haters gonna hate, but Angelina's jazz treatment puts some life and story in this "classic" pop piece. Her story telling approach and vocal dynamics bring this song to life, IMHO!

The same with me, I started brooding about the narrator's and Billie Jean's mindsets 😆🤣. Even her "mistakes" are meaningful in this performance. For example, when she swallows the words in the 2nd time she says "don't think twice" (which is itself a twist on the original lyrics) it may represent the narrator's lost of grip of the situation. He starts wavering since he went too close to Billie Jean. Even the strongest advice fails when one smells Billie Jean's deceiting parfume.

Angelina’s manager from the beginning is her uncle Michael Astar. From article of Music Norway interview we learn that Michael was raised in Japan and music was always his passion. After his family moved to Norway, Michael became a hip-hop DJ. As a 16-year old he was a DJ at 21+ night clubs in Oslo, Norway, getting the gigs because he looked older and no one asked his age before being hired. After getting tired of being a DJ, Michael started a music management company in 2013, and 3 months later, with no clients yet, Angelina signed-up to try out for Norway’s Got Talent. Angelina’s first audition when 7-years old was a cover of Billie Holiday’s song “Gloomy Sunday” that went viral when it got uploaded to RU-vid. Then Angelina won Norway’s Got Talent, had other viral RU-vids, performed on Norway, US and other TV shows and her career started to take off. Eventually she had over 1 billion views of her performances on RU-vid and Facebook before Angelina’s appearances on the American’s Got Talent - The Champions show. Her performances there further accelerated her career. At this point, Angelina asked her uncle Michael if it was possible for her to move to the US to pursue her music dreams. Michael says this was a tough call, and he asked himself questions like; how on earth are you going to pull this off? What about a VISA? What about finances? Are you willing to sell everything you have and own, and also get a loan to risk everything? Michael related that “These were questions I had to ask myself, several times a day. Then, I remembered, what did my mom do when she went to Japan? She didn’t even talk Japanese or knew anyone. She did it because she risked everything for a better future.” So, Michael flew alone to Los Angeles, studied and learned anything he could learn from the people he got to know during his time in the Industry. After gathering a bunch of people, he came back to Norway and started the process. He indicated that “A few months later, I told her, PACK YOUR BAGS! We are going next week to pursue your dream! All in baby. Her smile made it all worth the hassle.” “We stayed patient because the way this industry works is bizarre and you have to dodge bullets right and left to get anywhere. But would I do it again? Of course! Life without challenge is boring," Michael says. For Michael, a lot of his time involves talking with industry people, to see what’s happening out there. Having recently become a father and with COVID-19, time has become even busier and more crazy than usual. “There is a lot of stuff happening with Angelina, and it requires daily briefings with a lot of people.” America’s Got Talent had always been interested in bringing Angelina to the show, but with their normal contract, artists are being locked into a label, management, and other things for many years. Michael says that it did not matter if you get exposure or not, it was out of the question to give away that many rights. This kind of patience eventually paid off. Michael said that “Some time passed and they again contacted me, asking if she wanted to sing on their show. I convinced them to give me a contract where Angelina is free from any deal if she performs, she is great for their TV show and Angelina will get the exposure she needs to breakthrough, because I knew, the talent is one of the kind like no other, I just needed her to be seen and was on a daily hunt for how to get the right spot for her in the USA.” After, Angelina’s success on America’s Got Talent, she eventually signed with Republic Records in August 2020 where Angelina was told she was Republic’s highest priority new artist. Michael says the commitment with the right interest in mind has been one of the most important things when choosing a team and partners to be part of Angelina’s team. “You also need to choose someone with the right chemistry. These are the people you have to deal with on a daily basis, you have to have a good feeling and chemistry with the team you choose.” Although no specifics yet, Michael says that the plans for Angelina include going global. Advice from Michael: “Go with your instinct, it never fails, crazy how nature does that. Always be humble, you get way further being a nice person, people tend to be nice back. Always read the contract. Find a good lawyer (It’s super hard to find the good one, but with dedication, you can). Don’t rely on people, you want something done? Do it yourself. If you are good at something, never do it for free (Quote from the Joker).”

I'm with Ginger, give Mike more cold water to throw on himself. There is a lot going on here. Angelina pays homage to MJ's original in several ways here (phrasing, timbre sometimes, etc.) as she almost always does in her covers while changing the genre of the song. But beyond that I think maybe there is a bit of a statement here as well. She is just sitting with legs crossed (no dancing or movement but in complete control) before monochromatic sets that say "listen, don't watch", and with her free arm remaining relaxed and quiet (no gestures, certainly no glove). There were not even any close-ups of her face as she sings. All these elements together say, in Angelina's sweet way, that she is intending to take territory with just her music and style, no gimmicks or supplemental fireworks. No fluff. MJ was an excellent musician and singer but often intentionally covered that up and had people talking about moon-walking, and gyrations, etc. Some may have never really paid attention to the lyrics here but AJ made you focus on the story. Thus her impact is explosive though her manner rarely is. Just my two cents.
@johnruplinger3133
@johnruplinger3133 2 года назад
She is polar opposite of MJ. She takes Billy Jean's perspective. Angelina slays the king of pop. So so much better. Not sure how intentional she is in all this. Angelina is in control, composed, thoughtful, at rest, modest. Vs. MJ unsettled, unsure, constant motion, denying even while confessing, panicked..... This is a masterpiece (Full disclosure: I don't like pop.)
@kenscott8966
@kenscott8966 2 года назад
@@johnruplinger3133 I believe we would be stunned to understand just how intentional Angelina is both in her lyrics and in interpretations like "Billie Jean". I think even in her song choices there is a message to the music industry perhaps. But like good songwriting, there is an art to leaving some meanings and therefore some questions to the discretion of the listener (vs spelling everything out). We know Angelina is a good songwriter so I doubt if my hypothesis above will ever have an answer. Time will tell.
@johnruplinger3133
@johnruplinger3133 2 года назад
@@kenscott8966 She definitely sent a message with "Goodbye, Yellow brick Road" to Simon. That was brilliant especially after her genuine enthusiasm about meeting him. Must have been disappointing for her to say no. I have to listen a few more times to her rewrite of Bohemian Rhapsody. It's very deliberately altered. I like what she choose to leave out. Still. As you say. Poets don't fully understand what they are saying. That goes for most if not all the greats too, certainly for at least Dostoyevsky, O'Connor but I suspect even Homer & Shakespeare. She's not their level. But she is a level above contemporary pop song artists

Ginger, you don't have to worry about saying you likeed this Jazzy version a little better than the original. I watched many reactions to this by other singers, vocal coaches, music teachers and the vast majority said that Jazzy version by Angelina was better than the original. Just a few reactors didn't like it as much (non professionals) because they didn't appreciate jazz as much. I watched a reactor who says he is a staunch Michael Jackson fan, listens to him everyday. He was convinced no one could cover this song like Michael. He wasn't a big jazz fan also. After hearing her amazing voice and the Jazzy Style she sang it, he admitted that her version was better. So don't worry about people that don't appreciate Jazz genre. Like the Retro feel. The colors, Dial phone, old style suitcases, typewriter etc. Angelina picks the songs she sings and does the musical Arrangements. She's 15 here. Angelina's music video of her original song "7th Heaven" takes place in a jazz club setting. Another awesome song by Angelina!

Being an 'older' guy, I was never in to POP music, and I was never a big MJ fan. Unlike most people, when I think of him, I think of The Jackson 5, and him singing "Rockin Robin" or "ABC". LOL That said, I wasn't real excited about this version on my first listen, but like a couple of others she's done, it's 'growing on me', and I do appreciate what Angelina did with it. No trepidation necessary... it truly is a different song. Ginger, I love what you pointed out. It parallels what another commenter said in his analysis (although his comment was a bit too expansive). You mentioned Michael’s “panic” that was conveyed in his voice. That certainly comes across in his original version of the song. You could argue that Angelina’s voice is almost from Billie Jean’s perspective... sad, and lamenting Michael’s denial, and rejection of her. Your way of putting in makes Angelina’s interpretation plausible, although the previous commenter I mentioned expounded upon that by guessing at Angelina’s motive (a distraction, at best), something that doesn’t honor AJ’s intelligence. It’s a fascinating exercise in attributing alternative emotions to a song’s different versions. Nice reaction... love it! 👍😉

Sadly, Angelina’s paternal grandfather died in March 2018 and her maternal grandfather died in November 2019. Angelina’s maternal grandmother Mery Zamani has had tremendous influence on Angelina and her career as she introduced Angelina to Jazz at early age. Mery is famous Iranian contemporary writer, poet and painter who was also child prodigy herself being on Radio Iran's Children program at age 4 and began writing poetry and painting by age of 9. Later Mery was trained in art at Tokyo Academy in Japan where she met her husband, who was Japanese, during her master degree's training in Japan. There is nine year old video showing some of Mery's artwork in home setting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i9NxX0tSjS0.html ---- Mery has RU-vid channel that supports Angelina called Angelina Jordan Fanclub Mosarz: ru-vid.com/show-UChM_lpT4shdnsez93QMJPig. There are lots of videos in it that could only have been taken by insider or family member. Mery is also widely known under artist alias name Mosarz ---- Mery illustrated book that Angelina wrote ("Mellom to hjerter" that translates to Between Two Hearts) and was published in November 2015 when Angelina was 9 years-old and became youngest published author in Norway. Book based on Angelina's notes in her diary/notebooks and describes her meeting with shoeless girl. Podcast was published by Angelina’s publisher, Cappelen Damm, in 2015. In it Angelina talks with Erling Kittelsen, Norwegian author and poet and friend of family, about her book. Angelina tells of her understanding with little girl that Angelina will not wear shoes when she performs and that little girl will pray for Angelina. During pauses in talk, we hear small extracts from book which should be on children's reading list: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6p6iL989P_8.html There are three published Angelina videos created and directed by Mery: ---- Fly Me To The Moon (as 10-year old performed in video. One of most viewed Angelina videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jnnzbdt4_RE.html) ---- When You're Smiling (as 11-year old. You will have to watch video to see what happens next: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bLuNQ6s7fCQ.html) ---- Shield [as 12-year old, Angelina wrote this song. As 13-year old, Mery did artistic video of Angelina performing song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8OCbAlr_48.html. She said that song Shield is about someone you love and whose strong love protects you wherever you are. Angelina said song's sound was inspired by Bond films. Her favorite Bond film songs are Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger. She sings few bars of Diamonds Are Forever a cappella. She said that highlight of her career was singing for Quincy Jones' 85th birthday concert in London. When asked if she feels like she is 12 years old, Angelina says she only does when she looks at her passport: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-97hjWg4ToRQ.html] ---- 7th Heaven (wrote as 15-year old. A beautiful song by a super talented performer. I also noted the cord telephone, the manual typewriter, the old timey phonograph, and other items that people don't normally use now. But I agree. This is the best version of 'Billie Jean'. Thank you both for this great review.

The thing about Angelina... she's never trying to be "better" than the original. She is only ever trying to honor the original in her own unique way. "Better" is subjective and everyone will have different opinions on what they prefer, but one thing is certain... every single thing Angelina does is going to be high quality art. Something I should point out though.. Sometimes when Angelina takes on a song this iconic, and changes it this much, it can throw you off on the very first listen. It's only after you hear it a few times that you really start to appreciate what she has done. ...so be sure to go listen to the original (linked in the description) many times ;)

MJ has ment a zero and nothing to me ....just so that is said... I don't see the greatness or what is so iconic with that song. The only measurement of something iconic is it being super commercial. The text with a content miles from anything of mastery.... How can a text repeating "...he is not my son..." ten times be of any great content...???? Not exactly Bob Dylan or Angelina level on it. Anyone can write something better. In case there are something it is the dancing ....but that does not change or improve the musical or text part of it. But then comes the master named Angelina and arrange it into something of greatness. There is musical freedom and genius creativity behind it ....and not to speak about her voice and way of performing it. I must say that I like that stuff .....even if the text still is the same.... Well....anyone have the right to their own opinion..... By the way let me applaud and wish you luck with your tireless work.....

Must agree with Ginger, but also with Mike - better than MJ is a step too far. We all know the voice. So extra props to the pianist here. Jamming so soft in the background - but still with such a "beat" and swing and "movement" as steady as a steam train for Angelina to syncopate off is just chef's kiss.

Hi, Mike and Ginger! Thank you for another excellent reaction to Angelina. A few months after her appearance on America's Got Talent The Champions was released, she signed a contract with Republic Records on what I understand were very favourable terms for her. Her Manager/Uncle Michael Astar negotiated on her behalf. It appears that one of the conditions was that Angelina would finish her education before there was any major promotion. Since signing, she has released two original songs, "Milion miles" (to which you have reacted) and "7th Heaven". She has also released four covers, and I link all of them below, in anticipation that you will consider reacting to them. Billy Jean is a cult piece. Certainly not for the quality of the text! We are far from works created by David Foster, Diane Warren etc. It is the iconic prestige of MJ that carries the fame of the song. That said, in my book, this performance does not rank among the pieces of anthology like the performances in Norway, outdoors, at 8 years old ... Like I put a spell on you ... Like Back to black. .. Like AGT cHAMPION... Why? Dissonance between music and singing in large sections of the performance. I add and agree with my opinion (!): The video turns out to be more of a distraction than a complement to the song. I prefer Norwegian videos focusing on the artist and the musicians. Back to this performance: what is it that creates this dissonance? By listening to the song again and again, Angie is equal to herself: tempo, rhythm, cadence ... And her stony voice ... It's her own style. New style but her style. The problem: timing! Why? The inappropriate musical choice or the pianist who struggles to follow the girlie? Because Angie is a dominant, a "boss" --- it's known! She doesn't follow the music, the music has to follow her according to her specifications. So, could it be the pianist? Is that music writing suited to the style she explores: pop-jazz and this specific song? We should ask David Foster: these days he's her neighbor ... He is a composer and a pianist... And a "hitman"...
