He found writing songs for records really tough because he always expected more from himself. He could never live up to his own standards. He still writes music, mostly just instrumentals, just not for publication. To him the music is enough the words are extraneous. To fully appreciate how talented he is you need to check out “New York State of Mind” live from the Old Grey Whistle Test. It is an amazing performance.

You are right about what Billy said, he hates the songwriting process but he loves performing. He stopped making albums when he was having the least amount of fun anymore. He made 12 (pop) albums, the last one in 1993, but he's still performing to sold out crowds to this day! 74 and living his best life, tbh. Have you checked out Scenes From an Italian Restaurant yet? Studio or live version (Live from Long Island is my fave) you can't miss.

I went to 8 different schools in 11 years and We lived in the same house all that time. It was Chicago in the 60's. {bussing}. I hated school too.

This song and the songs Billy did around this were so classic and loving to a certain type of American music. There are many types of classic American music, i.e., jazz. This was in no way negating those influences, but paying tribute to the songs our parents and grandparents grew up with. Very well executed. A love song to doo-wop.

Great song. Joel has a Christmas-themed song, "She's Right on Time", if you're looking for something seasonal. Otherwise, I recommend "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" for your next song from him.

Beethoven was the same way about composition, BTW. As powerful and soaring as his music was, he sweated and strained over every note. Ultimately that's why Billy Joel eventually quit writing new songs. He didn't think any of his compositions were good anymore, so he just quit. He still performs, but he doesn't put out new material.
