Back in the day, there was a Holiday Inn in Fairfax, between Rts 50 and 123. In the basement was the lounge, the "Fox and Hounds" room. Every Friday evening, about half the Redskins would come in, both offence and defence, pull some tables together, order up a few pitchers, and have a Team Meeting. Kilmer was the leader of the pack. One evening, a waitress came over and said there were a few kids from a high school team lingering at the door and would it be possible to get an autograph. Kilmer did better than that. He said so everyone could hear "Send them in here! Which one is the quarterback? I want to talk to the quarterback"! You KNOW that made the kids' day! I saw it. I was there. He was a class act. PS. If anyone can believe this, Joe Theismann was the understudy. He sat at the end of the table, watched and listened, and kept his mouth shut. I can personally attest to that also.

On the rear bumper of my 1972 Vega Gt was a "I root for Washington and I Like Billy" bumper sticker. Current NFL players have nothing like the guts of Old Whiskey!

Billy Kilmer was one of the toughest SOB's to play QB in the NFL, and this was back in the era when QB's weren't spoiled and treated like precious little girls like they do today. If Billy played today I have no doubt he would have played for 20 years too like Tom Brady. Billy could take a licking and keep on ticking - and he hardly ever wore a chin strap. That's why in almost every shot where he gets sacked, his helmet comes flying off

Great video. I grew up in Washington when Allen came to the Redskins. Lots of people don't know how tough Kilmer was as a player and how great he was as a leader. He may not have had the arm or skills of the top QBs but he was a winner and led the Redskins through many great seasons and playoffs. His opening day comeback against the Giants in '76 with a bloody nose is stuff of legends. That single bar face mask also defined his toughness.

Billy was a good player with a large heart, your eyes would good wide as his ducks filled the air, not confident who was going to catch the ball. But it was fun. The good old days of Redskins football, from St. Vince to Joe Gibbs. I miss it. Hail to the Redskins, hail victory, Braves on the warpath, fight for old DC! Run, and pass, and score, We want a lot more! Beat em, swamp em, touchdown, Let the points soar! Fight on, fight on, till you have won, Sons of Washington! Rah! Rah! Rah!

Billy Kilmer was a Football Player. He played running back, he caught passes, he quarterbacked his team to winning games. He was a Football Player. For a couple years, he was huge.

I remember watching Billy when I was a kid first getting into football. Sonny certainly had the better arm, but you knew the game was in good hands with Billy as well. He always seemed to find a way to win the game.

I remember 1977. Kilmer would lead us, but we lost the chance to go to the playoffs because of a point differential against the Bears. That sucked. The same thing happened in 1979. Of course we blew that last game, that 20 point lead in Dallas. Now that I am remembering, my day is ruined!

Billy Kilmer giving the game ball credit to the guy that stopped the bridge of his nose from bleeding. I was so proud of what my father at times called the "Deadskins" from earlier seasons. It's ok to be a loser. It builds character. Shows one the path forward.

I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan, so with the Cowboys & REDSKINS being in the same division, I got to see plenty of Kilmer (sometimes, more to my liking...lol). But B.K. was one of my favorite enemy QBs. Loved to watch him. Sonny J. obviously had an incredible arm. BTW..... I also loved Pat Fisher#37!🏈 God bless our pro football heroes from a by-gone era.

Growing up during my teens, I was a rabid Redskins fan. Even though I rejoiced when the Redskins beat the Cowboys, I liked watching the Cowboys play, Roger Staubach, their new shotgun formation, the fake stand-ups their O-lines did before each offensive play was intriguing. They had good receivers (Drew Pearson I remember), running backs... All bye-gone times...

Being from Minnesota, I was privy to watching another quarterback in the same vein as Kilmer, Joe Kapp. Those two were similar in they were tough as nails, did everything they could to win, couldn't throw a spiral but when needed the passes they threw were completed, shed blood every week, and most importantly, wore the single bar on their helmets. Of course Kilmer hated the chin guard while Kapp used one but it was rarely on his chin.

Joe Kapp played at Cal and coached them in the 80's after he was done playing. When asked why UCLA had beaten Cal for something like 21 straight years, Joe said, every time we have played them, they scored more points than we did

My dad grew up in Azusa and played with Billy at citrus college. My pop had 9.8 hundred speed and I’m sure Kilmer landed more than a few of those duck balls to him! Semper fi dad RIP!

i'd never heard of Frank Grant before. He was in half of the hilights both with Saints and Redskins. They were quite the duo.

Grant came on when Roy Jefferson (#80 scoring against the Rams) would get injured. By ‘75, he was their long threat, instead of Charley Taylor. In that one Saints replay, the #46 catching the TD against the ‘Skins was Danny Abramowicz, their best receiver from ‘68-‘72.

Thank you for this amazing collection. There was a touchdown pass up in Minnesota to Roy Jefferson that I thought was particularly gutsy. Skins were behind and recovered ball at midfield after Vikings coughed it up. First play Kilmer throws it deep to Roy. Instant six.

When I was a kid Billy was my man, my parents lived Sonny, seven had a statue of Sonny my dad painted on the t.v for twenty years,but always liked Billy for some reason.

So nice to see players back then when they scored a touchdown they simply tossed the ball to the referee or a minor spike. None of this bullsh..it dancing and strutting acting like scoring a TD makes them special.

I forgot how good Frank Grant was. The trio of Taylor, Jefferson and Grant was quite formidable. FYI: #5 must have been in 1971 not 1972 because they had "R" on their Helmet. In 1972 they had the Indian with the headdress.

Inexplicably left out is the pass Kilmer threw to Charley Taylor in the '72 NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys. The score was a tight 10-3 Washington lead in the third quarter when Kilmer threw a perfect spiral to put Washington up 17-3 (Kilmer normally threw a wobbly ball). Final score: Washington 26, Dallas 3. On to the Super Bowl where they lost to the only team in NFL history to post a perfect season - the Miami Dolphins.

The biggest thing I notices is how much classier players were back then. They are not jumping around and acting like jackasses after EVERY play. In todays NFL a DB will jump up and down and beat his chest AFTER giving up a 25 yard catch.

@@nflxfiles I loved Billy he gave his all a lot of times but out of shape the last couple years he couldn’t scramble at all and he was a tailback at one Time yes he played his heart out sometimes but the Playoffs against the Rams in 74 and Minnesota 76 he didn’t do nothing but get sacked... But that was George Allen’s fault he picked Loyalty instead of Talent..He wasn’t a good coach he superstitious and he was just motivator.. Traded all draft picks off old washed up players who I loved but out there limping fat bald..

@@chrisslaughter5552 I love your fandom and agree it wasn't always pretty. Billy was Coach Allen's guy. I have humorous clip I may put up soon of Coach Allen pleading for benching of Theismann in favor of Kilmer while broadcasting a Redskins game in 1978, he couldn't even help himself then, nevermind while he was coaching. I have to say, though, Coach Allen is one of the greatest defensive and special teams coaches to ever live, (DC of the 1963 Champion Bears and even awarded the game ball) as Director of Player Personel for the Bears Coach Allen was THE man who drafted Ritchie Petitbon, Mike Ditka, Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus. Coach Allen also essentailly invented Middle Linebacker position with Bill George (tho Sam Huff may argue) and was first coach to hire a Special Teams coach (Dick Vermeil) in 1969 (Eagles hired Marv Levy in same capacity same year and Levy later was Special Teams coach for Allen in Washington). As Head Coach of the Rams Coach Allen is the man who drafted Tom Mack and talked Jack Pardee out of retirement after he survived cancer. Coach Allen was also sued by Papa Bear Halas and lost but won (long story) somehow I deleted all this while posting For the Redskins he not only led them to their 1st Super Bowl but he also brought in Petitbon & Pardee as well Ken Houston & Roy Jefferson (both in steals of trades!) as well as John Riggins, Joe Theismann and even drafted original Hog George Starke. It was also Coach Allen's idea to build Redskins Park. When the CFL began, Coach Allen was the person basically in charge of scouting players for the entire league. @@nflxfiles please do I don’t even watch the game anymore but I love watching the old clips and I loved everything about the Redskins I’d cry when they lose and my mom would say they didn’t lose they just ran out of time..Love your videos I’m just saying things looking back at those days how we could have been better but The Redskins was my first love..And first heartbreak...At that time I hated to see Coach Allen leave In 77 but he was the exact opposite of Coach Landry he was a players coach and he was fun and he was a winner..Ramskins The future is now and he’d drink Milk on the sidelines he was a loyal coach who didn’t discriminate he hated the Cowboys I can’t believe they are no more

@@nflxfiles Yeah, Billy Kilmer's first season with the Redskins was 1971. The only seasons the Redskins had the R on the helmet was 1970-71. So the only season Kilmer was with the Reskins when they had the R on the helmet was 1971.

Gee, This will be a short list. Kilmer had NO arm strength. I remember Kilmer as a kid in the 70's. Kilmer's last season should have been Joe Theismann first starting season. He was done.

Billy had two bombs of 50 yards in the air in this video. Joe Montana said his longest throw was 55 yards and Drew Brees was the same. It’s not just about arm strength, but also accuracy and throwing on the run. The average long bomb now is 55-60 yards.

Funny, Joe Namath threw 173 TD's to 220's INT's with a 50% completion rate & played in same number of Super Bowls yet is in HOF. Kilmer also had 1,509 rushing yards and 288 receiving yards. Appreciate your opinion and thank you for watching.

Namath's influence on 1) Salaries - his first NYJ contract was the first time a player set the bar and led to a true bidding war between the leagues, 2) Super Bowl interest - just check out SB 1 and 2's empty seats and compare to the sold out Orange Bowl with the interest he generated with his pregame comments, 3) Making the sport 'cool' and driving female viewership, 4) Significantly spreading the use of football players in national commercial campaigns. This guy was at the forefront of driving football past baseball in the minds of the U.S. fanbase.

If sonny j had not been injured, and could play in the super bowl against Miami, they would have beaten the un-defeated dolphins for their first super bowl win. Liked Kilmer, but the red skins could just not pull off a victory with their second string quarter back.

He was tough and a winner especially with the Redskins. He got the job done. Had a 68% winning average and took the Redskins to 5 playoffs in 6 years.
