The first time I heard this song was on the school bus in 1984. I was 14 and loved this song and Billy Ocean's other songs. I sang this song so much, so much that Billy ended up telling me what was in my future. I married a woman from Trinidad, the same country that Billy's from. We're still together, going on 28 years, with three grown children. Thank you Billy!

I dunno, the things that define 80's music is more to do with the gated reverb, usage of synths, saxophones, and a very strong hook. Clean lyrics aren't really specific to the 80's as previous decades had that too.
