Insane right! Bro back when I was in high school, all the hip hop heads was saying that the artists were putting out too much music and it was ruining the quality. It was mostly mainstream cats doing it at that time. Couldn’t imagine that some of the best artists on the planet would be putting out multiple fire albums in a year 🔥🔥

Haha I love it! I probably couldn’t do that with most abstract rappers - like with Elucid or even a Earl sweatshirt - it takes me multiple listens to really start getting a grasp on wtf they even talking bout lol but with Billy woods he does a great job of honing in on particular themes. And even though they have a lot of depth, you can still find meaning on one listen. Preciate the love brodie!!

Another thing that’s cool is on Schism, there is a complete beat switch halfway thru the song. The second best is made with the same beat as No Hard Feelings from Athiopes. Either Messiah used the same sample or he sampled No Hard Feelings. Either way, it further adds to the representation of a “schism” or division. Now, I haven’t done enough digging, but I wonder if there is thematically a schism as well. Either from the first half of the song to the second and/or from “No Hard Feelings” to “Schism.”
@BSideRapReviews
@BSideRapReviews Год назад
Dope insights!! Yeah I think you’re right…I was kinda getting the impression that the “schism” was between making it out of the hood (the perspective woods rapped from) and getting caught up in the hood lifestyle (fat rays perspective). See I was trying to figure out the same thing. I been listening to both back to back and trying to find the link. Fat Ray is the one who said “no hard feelings” but I don’t quite see the link No Hard Feelings had to his verse outside of the sample. I will say though I feel like “no hard feelings” had this similar imagery of a black man making it out the hood that’s “schism” did. And also I think the woman he started hinting at in “no hard feelings” may be the same women he talked about multiple times on this album “Church”

Ayyy I really appreciate that bro!! I think some of that a lot of that is a testament to Billy Woods. I typically don’t react to abstract rappers because I wouldn’t be able to add that much value on 1 listen but woods does such a great job of honing in on a particular topic. That plus i edit out stuff like running the song back or spending minutes in deep thought on what I just heard so the video ain’t boring hahaha! I check out pretty much every artists the community recommends to me, but I honestly haven’t reacted to nearly any of those recommendations. Right now every video I react to I factor in 1) what the community is interested in 2) what albums get me excited 3) what albums can I give actual good analysis too and 4) i prioritize new albums. @@BSideRapReviews I was actually not a big fan of Haram on first listen, but when I discovered Aethiopes it really blew the door open for me on both of them. No doubt woods is among the elite! For my tastes, and focusing on rappers that are active right now, the absolute top has to include woods, Roc Marciano, Mach-Hommy and Earl Sweatshirt. These guys just have the ability to make insane and unique lyricism seem effortless. It was also fairly mindblowing to discover that billy woods started his career like 20 years ago, and then he just fits perfectly into the abstract wave we're riding right now.

man...just got around to this one I only got into Woods in like 2020 so I've been taking my time with his stuff since its so dense. I agree with what you said about ELUCID, his delivery is so fucking dope. Kinda reminds me of why I love Schoolboy Q. They each kind of emphasize different syllables than you would expect and it makes their shit really pop. Woods just endlessly has these lines that make me wanna google shit, which I love. Mach-Hommy got me reading about Haitian history and the IMF while Woods has me looking at all sorts of shit. I need to get into Akai Solo as well so his discog is on the list. This one hit at just the right time for me. I JUST got into Fat Ray actually. He popped up on "This thing of ours 2" EP that Alchemist put out in 2021 as part of Bruiser Brigade (Danny Brown collective out of Detroit). His verse on that track is crazy (anyone with bars and a dope DOOM reference is going to get a look from me). Fat Ray's 2021 "Santa Barbara" project was pretty slick and I need to hear more. So when I saw him on the feature list for a billy woods project I was surprised in a good way. Love how he showed out on those bagpipes. Woods' dad was active in the civil war struggle in Zimbabwe so when he says shit like "after the revolution, they ate the same bowl of porridge" I wonder if he is recalling the struggle his father and those revolutionaries went through not being very fruitful? I love that Woods shouts out Roc Marci and I know he praised Ka in a previous interview. I see Marci, Ka, Woods, Earl, etc all part of that DOOM lineage. Ka + Woods is my ultimate wish list even for just one song. Love this project. Keep going man. Really appreciate your passion and knowledge. Happy holidays.

I'm in the same boat, I found out about woods either 2019 or 2020 - I checked out History will absolve me first then Hiding Places. The song SpongeBob is what made me a fan. Haha wood/Q is such out of the box comparison but Ima have to agree. Billy woods is more mellow but they got that same way of using different vocal inflections. I didn't realize Fat Ray was in bruiser brigade. I remember checking out that song, but I didn't know enough about the members to pick out anyone except Danny and JUS. I really rock with his performance here though - Ima dig into his discog. Ima have to read up on that Zimbabwe history. I went down the same rabbit hole you did with Haiti haha. Honestly been thinking bout learning some phrases in Haitian Creole cus right now I only know how to cuss people out (thanks to mach lmao). But that's dope that he incorporates that into his storytelling, he had some similar civil war imagery on a number of projects. Big ole facts. Doom is on of if not the most influential underground rapper of all time. Those rappers def carrying the torch. I could see def see a Ka and Woods collab being really dope - shoot for a whole album really. Concept wise, Ka has been pretty straightforward his last couple releases but he can get in that same highly conceptual bag that Woods gets into like he did on Dr. Yen Lo and Honor Killed the Samurai. Their deliveries would mesh really well too. That would be sick.

Roc and Al might be number 2, I’ve been listening to Elephant Man’s Bones HEAAAAVVVVYYYY Don’t know if he did it intentionally (he must have), but Fat Ray actually says “No Hard Feelings” in his verse over the same sample as on Aethiopes. I also liked his simple movie reference bar: “now go Get Shorty and Kill Bill on the way back”

Hahah nah facts gimme something I know cus soon as he start talking bout wars and historical events, my public school education ain’t built for that 😂😂😂 Crazy enough I think there are a solid 5 albums that’s could have been AOTY last year. I think Mr Morale, Forver Story, and Aethipoes all woulda bested pray for Haiti which was my AOTY, and the Roc and Al and melt my eyez woulda been in the convo. I missed that cus I couldn’t remember the name for he song but I think it was def intentional and a dope nod to the song. I think it is pure coincidence, but the Tarantino movies also subtly reference each other.

@@BSideRapReviews I’ve listened to that song maybe 15-20 times since it dropped (trying to not overlisten and ruin it) and every single time, without fail, when the beat switch comes a tear or more comes out. One of the best songs I’ve ever heard, no bullshit

On that last song, the woman is in an abusive relationship. His friend or her BF is telling him “she don’t wanna be saved.” She’s posting selfies with a split lip. He heads to save her and she ghosts him, most likely due to the control her man has on her. She was likely forced to pretend that Billy was a chump. Or she got beaten more. Or he took her phone. Or he killed her. We don’t know what happens to her. If you look at the statistics of crimes against women, she could very well have died. But either way. It’s sad af.

WILD!! I thought the song was already dark enough but that’s even darker. Def see the messaging of all those things too now when I listen. I will say that’s phenomenal story telling!

Did you already react to hiding places?

Nah, I prob won’t. I only did 1 reaction to a project that came out before the channel was out - it be hard enough to keep up with all current stuff lol. I rock with it heavy though. History Will Absolve me was first time I heard Woods, but hiding places the project that I feel is my actual intro to him

Soooo you saying Billy better than Earl 👂🤔ijs?
@BSideRapReviews
@BSideRapReviews Год назад
Fasho and pretty comfortably. I think Billy woods easily got the better discog of the two - esp if you only factoring in last 5 years. I think it’s a little closer if you wrap up wooed the same super lyrical way that he did early last decade but his more slowed down, introspective, style I think Billy woods had the same level of introspection but does it with better story telling, better flows, cadences, and better rhyme schemes. I think Earl’s the better puncher out of the 2. Some rap songs prob my fav album out of both their recent albums but in genuinely thinks, Aethipoes, hiding places, and Haram are all better albums than that. So yeah I think Earl is up there but I got Billy woods pretty comfortably as best abstract. Closest competition to me is Mach Hommy if you consider him abstract (I personally don’t though)
