Birmingham could've sealed promotion if they won this match but this defeat meant they still needed to get a result at Reading (who beat Norwich 2 days later) on the last day of the season to seal an immediate return to the Premier League, it also brought Sheffield United who beat Swansea earlier that day right back into contention. As for Preston this was a massive result because if they failed to win they would've been out of contention for a play off place but this win meant they still had a chance but they had to QPR and hope that Cardiff or Burnley slip up.
