Bio Dude Bioactive Bearded Dragon Terrarium 40 day UPDATE . Self Cleaning and Self Maintaining

This video the Bio Dude gives an update on his Bioactive bearded dragon terrarium that has been up and running since May 1st 2017, but expanded into a larger, PVC cage shipped by reptilekages.com. This video is approximately 40 days after initial transition. Featuring the Dude's one of a kind Terra Sahara. This self cleaning and self maintaining ecosystem is doing great with no problems. Utilizing the Dude's proprietary bioshot, earwigs, springtails, darkling beetles and isopods this is a fully self cleaning and self maintaining ecosystem.
With his upgrade video, I was very lucky to have the owner of reptilekages.com, Zach send me an entirely new PVC enclosure with the changes in which I requested to make these cages easier to use and maintain with my bioactive substrates. Better doors, aeration and other upgrades are included in this update and will be a set standard when offered on thebiodude.com. I did neglect to touch base on snakes, other lizards and protecting them from any heating elements they could come in contact with. There are many commercial bulb wire covers available on the market today that can be easily installed. I am looking to utilizing the first model cage received into a bioactive Blue Tongue Skink enclosure. I feel this will give me best of both worlds (besides testing with snakes) to see what additional steps or precautions one must make when using these cages. Overall they are GREAT!
I will be sure to update this video and thread with how well the ecosystem has established, grown and of course gauge Hercules' interest overall. I am very happy to be able to test these cages and if everything works out, hopefully offer them on my website with FREE SHIPPING. It feels great to continually update and prove that my products not only work, but are THE BEST when it comes to reptile husbandry and expertise. Lately, there have been some "mimics" that will try to replicate, but NEVER will compare!

I cant believe it was day 40 already! Its good to see the improvements done on the tank. Hercules is a cutie and I love how he massacres his plants. I started giving my dragons cactus because of you. They LOVE it!

in experimenting with my bioactive ecosystem tanks for bearded dragons, I have found that adding red wiggler worms to the CUC, was the one determining factor to bust the humidity down so that the CUC and plants were happy, as well as the dragons. Ive got them in all my tanks now, and, im finding that the CUC are surviving and breeding at a better rate as well. :-)

Ask and you shall receive! This is definitely going to be a consideration once i have room to upgrade my beardies tank when i have more space. I know you said you would be offering these tanks on your site at some point (I think?) but I didn't catch if you said that they would already come with all the modifications that is done to the one in this video or not.Thanks again!

Sooo excited for the bluey video, but I'm a little worried about the substrate depth. 4 inches seems pretty shallow for a species that loves burrowing. Interested to see how The Dude remedies this. Maybe Kages can come out with some sort of substrate shield accessory to put in front of the doors.

your videos are amazing dude, extremely informative and helpful. I understand they're less common in the pet trade, but if you wanted to do a video on maybe a set up for a desert iguana or chuckwalla, that would be amazing. there's virtually no information about how to set up for these lizards due to their rarity, so i've been making piecemeal of any text i happen upon. some of it is very, very outdated too.

The cage habitat looks great! I agree with you regarding the runners though. If the substrate got at all wet it would really gum up the works too. Do they have an option for a door that hinges at the bottom and locks at the top? I'd much rather have that than sliding doors.

Love the look, and style of the cages, getting one myself (48x24x24) for my water dragons to use while I save up for a larger enclosure later (the one I am getting than goes to my beardy Steggo). Been looking for some eastern beardies, since steggo is a central beardy though. also though quite enjoy the amount of info an detail you put into these both set up,a nd just what goes into your bio-active. been doing research to find the perfect set of soil/substrate, and plants for my dragons (beardy, and Chinese). Though wondering if it would be better change the decor set up every so often, and also swtich out some plants either when i change decor items, or when they have eaten or tore apart the plants. Also found all three of my dragons, steggo/Draco/Immugai, are escape artists as such a good lock is needed.

@Josh - These enclosures are good, but it would be a lot better if you and Zach figured out a better light setup with UVB and grow light fixtures pre-installed. I don't really like the modification for the grow light option. The light does not look that secure and you need to drill holes in the enclosure to make it work. Pre-drilled holes with more secure fixtures would be much better. When working with lighting, I would rather see a more solid solution than this. Other than that it seems pretty good. Some more natural wood exterior finishes would be a nice touch, but not a deal breaker. The lights are kind of a deal breaker for me though.

Aren't you worried about the dragon eating sphagnum moss? I did this setup but removed any moss on top, just leaving it underneath for moisture and cleanup crew food

I had similar problems. I salvaged a low draw computer fan and fitted it to circulate air. Seems to have done the job, he still a bit smelly..😕

Dude, love your stuff and videos been kinda following you since the Genesis days, one thing you should check out is a company putting out cages similar to the Kages that Zack has. One of the drawbacks on the cage Hercules is in now like you mentioned can't remove the doors and the ventilation issues. Doing research into larger cages I found a company called ZenHabitats, they offer 4'x2'x2' cages with a removable screen lid, sliding doors that you can take out, and substrate shields. You can mount lighting on the top of the cage or inside depending on the preference.

I hope you realize that's a minimum size so your just going to what give your reptiles the minimum cage when they deserve soo much more space then that would they only have 4 feet by 2 feet in their natural habitat nooo ofcourse not so why only give them that why not build a 8 foot by 6 foot enclosure like for a skink omg this is soo sad for those reptiles because its tiny tiny tanks lol

I bought the bio setup and included your large elephant feed plant before watching this follow-up video. Have you or anyone come across a safe plant that beardies don’t like to eat? Like with my goldfish they eat most plants, but Im able to have a planted tank because they don’t eat a few types like anubias and java fern. Is there something like that for bearded dragons?

@Josh, can you do a video setting up a Uromastyx enclosure? I've heard different opinions on substrate. They come from very rocky and dry places , so wondering if your substrate is dense and rocky like for the Uros. Also, how to avoid the humidity issues shown in this video. I think I will get an enclosure by Cuatom Kages. Also, with all the dry leaves and wood you put in, is there any fire danger? Seems like under the hot lights in a Uro enclosure, it might be dangerous? Thanks!

I sure can. I will be working on doing one for a URO in the next few months. After the move I will have a full recording studio to pump out GREAT content. I have never had any "fire" issues, but you need to be wise with how many leaves you use with a URO anyway since they really are not exposed to that much LL in the wild.

Do you think you’ll ship worldwide at some point in the near future? Hey there! no we did not, as it is PVC it would not be necessary as we can hold the proper humidity with hand spraying. Hope this helps!

I have a question: One thing I noticed with Bearded Dragon poop is the white thing which is not being broke down by bioactively. Should it still need spot cleaning? Or can I just let it be

Hi Babel. That depends, if you are only using the bugs as your cleaning aspect, you will still need to spot pick the rates. If you are utilizing our BioShot, it will break down the urates for you.

Kayla, I would use almost no to little AAA Spag. I would probably use a little more substrate (probably one extra 36 quart bag) and get some rocks in there. Uros love rocks to bask, love intense heat and will relish all edibles put into the enclosure : )

Personally, I recommend an enclosure that's at least a 4'x2'x2' for an adult dragon. Most often these are custom builds done by cage companies such as ReptileKages.com

Do you ever get concerned about them ingesting the substrate? I would love to do this setup but my guy was hospitalized once after ingesting his substrate. Also would love to hear your updated thought on mercury vapor bulbs!!

I'm very sorry to hear about your battle with impaction. Unfortunately it's common with synthetic substrate. All of our soils are organic and void of synthetic material, so no, there's not a risk of impaction when using our system. Most often impaction is due to a primary issue such as improper basking temperatures, upper respiratory infection, parasitic infection, suppressed immune system, etc. There's a great video about impaction here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vIHVJTWjZ0c.html

The Bio Dude Josh Halter a CT scan and surgery showed that he had this weird dilation/ out-pocketing of his intestines which was biopsied but we still don’t know what it was! They found a small amount of substrate in there but I don’t think it was his primary issue. I rescued him from someone who didn’t offer UV and they actually thought he was dead when they brought him to me. So he might always be a little abnormal. So I just figured I’d ask. He actually has an appointment next month for his annual exam and bloodwork

I'm sorry to hear that :( I hope they are able to figure out what is wrong. For now, I would hold off on going bioactive. I recommend not going bioactive with a reptile that has a compromised immune system or an internal issue. I hope your little one gets better soon!

Yes. It could burn your plant roots in extreme cases. A little more is fine, but I wouldn't double the recommended dose

I purchased a 75 gallon bioactive setup from the BioDude and received a discount code for 15% off my next order. For my next order I went to purchase a clean up crew of isopods and springtails but was told that the discount code does not apply to "bugs" despite what the discount code says. I was told I'd have to wait until Monday to speak to the manager and that the "bugs" will probably be sold out by then.

Hi Jesse. I'm sorry that your experience with us was not up to your standards, but as far as I know we went above and beyond for you. Our manager even pulled bugs from her personal collection to ship to you, packaged it herself, and sent you an extra cup that you didn't pay for! It was explained that the code does not apply to the bugs and only to select BioDude branded products. No where on the discount code info does it say it applies to everything. I am legitimately concerned about that bearded dragon. The fact that after only forty days, the ENTIRE front of the cage was COMPLETELY covered in scratches tells me that a lot of the time, that beardie wanted OUT. One of the classic signs of an unhappy animal is one that is constantly trying to walk out through the glass. If your animal is doing this, you're doing something wrong.

How do you draw this conclusion without knowing all of the variables? How easy do those panels scratch? How many of those scratches are from sliding the doors open and shut over time and not actually the dragon itself? It seems like those doors are also pretty dirty so how much of what you're seeing is dirt and not actually scratches? You're kinda reaching here, friend.
