Andrew Peter Motion is a English poet, critic, biographer and lecturer. Being born in London on 26 October 1952, he read English at University College, Oxford. Further, He taught English at the University of Hull (from 1976-81) where he met the poet Philip Larkin. He writes poems that are both lyrical and concise, direct yet reticent. Often personal or narrative in character, they frequently treat themes of loss and death. His first volume, The Pleasure Steamers (of 1978), was recognised with critical acclaim. His Other verses collections include Independence (in 1981), Dangerous Play: Poems 1974-1984 (published in 1984), Natural Causes (in 1987), The Price of Everything (in 1994), Salt Water (1997), Public Property (in 2003, this is a collection of poems written by him while he was poet laureate), and The Cinder Path (2009). In between the years 1981 to 1983 He served as editor of Poetry Review and was Poetry Editor and Editorial Director at London publishers Chatto & Windus between 1983 to 89. Now, He has been Chairman of the Arts Council of England’s Literature Panel since 1996. It was in 1999 when he became Poet Laureate succeeding Ted Hughes. And He was also knighted in 2009 . Among his biographies are The Lamberts: George, Constant and Kit (of 1987), Philip Larkin: A Writer's Life (of 1993), and a life of John Keats (of 1997). While his autobiographical prose includes essays in Ways of Life: On Places, Painters and Poets (in 2008). and has written the novels such as The Invention of Dr. Cake (in 2003) and Silver (in 2012), which is a sequel to Treasure Island. Along with hull university he also taught at the University of East Anglia (during 1995-2003), and currently teaches at Royal Holloway College, Univ. of London (2003-).
