Derek Walcott grew up in a humble abode with his twin brother Roderick, and older sister, Pamela. His father, Warwick Walcott, an artist and poet, died when they were very young. His mother, Alix was the Principal of the Methodist Primary School.
Derek Walcott won a scholarship to the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus).
Sir Derek Walcott was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992.
