Wherein Pran was the quintessential movie villain of top-grade films of Bollywood’s classic era, Shyam Kumar was the same in countless B-Films of the 1950s and 60s. And when Shyam wasn’t playing the baddie, he could often be seen in authoritarian roles such as that of a police officer or tribal chief.
Born Syed Gul Hamid Ali in 1913, he belonged to a Patthan family who had settled in Poona. His first film role was actually as a hero in the 1942 picture Sukhi Jeevan directed by popular action star Harishchandra Rao. Adept at singing, Kumar also did playback for over a dozen films in the 1940s and early 50s, but throat cancer robbed him of this talent and he thereafter put all his efforts into acting appearing in numerous fantasy and horror films.
A widower, Shyam Kumar died on April 22, 1980 and was survived by three sons and a daughter, Zarina, who acted in a few films of the 1980s.
