When it comes to aquarium filtration there are so many companies trying to over complicate the process when it is a very simple one. This just brings it back to where it should be. Simple and effective. Groovy.

All the Biohome media can be bought here (I supply worldwide): www.filterpro.co.uk (also has links to other suppliers) This media combines the ultra porous structure of Biohome mini ultra with the added trace elements found in Biohome plus to create the Ultimate filter media. With the available surface area supporting aerobic bacteria and the protected inner core supporting anaerobic bacteria, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are processed effectively. Works well at high and low flow rates so forget about having to force the volume of your aquarium through the media 'x' amount of times per hour as you would with other types of filter media. Perfect for both fresh water and marine systems, biohome filter media will replace any ceramic or plastic media in external canister, overhead, trickle, shower, hang on or sump filters. The added trace elements and open pore structure in Biohome Ultimate offer the ultimate home for all beneficial bacteria, cutting the time taken to establish a strong fully functional bacterial colony a matter of 2-3 weeks and include the following: Silica, Titania, Alumina, Ferric Oxide, Lime, Magnesia, Potash, Soda, Phosphorus Pentoxide, Chromium Sesquioxide, Manganic Oxide, Zirconia, Hafnia, Zinc Oxide, Barium Oxide, Strontia, Stannic Oxide, Sulphur Trioxide. (from XRF analysis) CHECK THOSE NAMES AGAINST THIS INFORMATION SITE FOR BACTERIAL GROWTH AND NUTRITION: textbookofbacteriology.net/nutgro.html US Biohome Stockist - greatwaveeng.com Any questions please contact Richard (Pondguru) 07772848730 or pondguru@btinternet.com Filter media does not get any better than this but for an extra quick set-up time each order taken from Ebay or through the website has free gel filter starter balls (5 per kg) to rapidly seed the filter with live bacteria. Forget about adding all sort of sachets and monthly chemical absorbers to your filter. Keep it simple and arrange the filter correctly with the best filter media available. Many of the filter products available are a waste of time and money and will simply mask the problems caused by an ineffective filter. See this video on setting up an external canister filter for directions on how to get the most out of your filter and have it working at maximum efficiency: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-szrUlHTW5Zo.html Simply protect the media with good graded foams and fine particle matting / pad to remove suspended solids (which clog any filter media) and your media will give you years of service. The test in this video is to demonstrate how easily the water can find the inner structure of the media as you can say your media has the largest available area for bacteria but if the water can't get there what is the point?. It is not part of a full comparison between filter different medias. That will come in a future video. Thanks for watching and check out my other videos. Subscribe for more: ru-vid.com

@pondguru
@pondguru 11 лет назад
Yes it supports both. Seachem matrix is also supposed to support it too but tests I've done and seen seem to show that water has a problem getting to the internal part of that media. If water can't get there neither can waste to feed bacteria.

I feel as if the pressure is off now as both myself and the guy who makes this for me have been striving to come up with the best filter product for years and this is it. I can't take much credit though as all I did was suggest a smaller version of ultra (resulting in 'mini ultra') then asked if the trace elements from 'plus' could be added to it. It was foing to be too difficult to get it all to bind together then one day I got a call to say he'd done it so he's the one who did all the work.

Glad it's all going well. It is indeed special media. Yes, it is all the same mix but during firing it changes colour. The internal part of the media is fired but since it doesn't get the intense heat of the outside (it is more dense too) it keeps its original colour. The pattern of colour demonstrates the anaerobic zone quite nicely on this media so I often snap some to show where the anaerobic bacteria live in the core.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 лет назад
No worries, man. It really is excellent media and the mini ultra and the ultimate are without doubt the best media you can buy. It will be monday before I can post out but it will go with the first post, no worries.

Yes, it is the same elements used in Biohome plus which has been used for years in marine systems with great results. Biohome plus is mentioned a few times on forums about use in marine and although the ultimate media is different structure, all ingredients are the same.

They are for water conditioning and they release a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal treatment into the water. They also can drop the pH if used in large enough amounts but most people use them as a background treatment for fungus / bacteria while breeding fish.

It just costs what it costs to send it. That is proportionally less with bigger amounts but it is expensive to send from UK to US or vice versa. I send quite a bit to Australia too and the postage is high there too. Europe is obviously less as it's not as far away.

I didn't even know Reef One made a marine version of the Biorb. We gave up selling the Biorb tanks years ago when it became apparent how unsuitable they were for fish due to the ineffective filtration. I'm not sure what is involved in the reef conversion kit so can't comment on that unfortunately. The Biohome media will replace any existing filter media but I'm not sure what the reef version of biorb have as media.

I am in the process of making prototypes for a new filter which uses Biomotion so once it is ready (and protected) for sale after Interzoo next year there will be a nation of videos about that filter (and other ones I am developing) which use media in the Biohome range, including Biomotion.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 лет назад
The word will surely spread about the new media as it is indeed very good stuff. Bot filters are internal but totally different types. One is as far from a traditional filter as you could imagine and the other may at first seem gimmicky but everything about it is designed to filter the water as efficiently as possible.

Like all very porous media it will break up over a very long time due to the lifitin in and out during maintenance. If the filter is set up properly however the disturbance will be minimal allowing the media to last a very long time.

@pondguru
@pondguru 11 лет назад
Yes it is already outselling the other forms of biohome media I have been selling for a while which is a great indication of how good it is. See the comment below from John Broderick.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 лет назад
Bacteria is essential as it processes fish waste from ammonia to nitrite and in some cases (if the media will support it) nitrate. There are aerobic and anaerobic forms of bacteria but most media will only support aerobic bacteria which results in a build up of nitrate which is removed by plants and partial water changes. If the media will support anaerobic bacteria there will be less nitrate and you'll need to do less water changes.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 лет назад
Oh right, lol. I wouldn't bother changing that personally as since it just sits at the bottom of the tank it doesn't really act as a filter. The only real filtering is done by the tiny foam in the bottom of the tank. The best thing for Biorb tanks is amano shrimps which will pick the alfagrog (lava rock type stuff) but like all shrimps they are susceptible to amminia and nitrite spikes which can plague biorbs.

Richard I thank you for biohome. I bought the ultimate and the bio gravel. I put the ultimate in my Fluval 407 and the bio gravel in my tidal 110. I have a heavy stocked 55 gallon mbuna tank that has always had issues with nitrates. I mean, 3 days after a water change and my nitrates would be at 100 ppm. I kid you not, in 2 weeks after putting the biohome in my filters my nitrates are staying steady at less than 40 ppm which is way better than it was. My goal is to only do 1 water change a week and it seems like I am well on my way. This stuff is legit and worth every penny. Oh, I also used the seachem flourish as you suggested. That could have helped as well. Again thanks and keep up the good work!!!

Oh my god I have just ordered 1kg of biohome ultimate, from your eBay store, and I am simply amazed. Delivery, arrived way before was expected. I am running 1 kg in a fluval 306 canister filter with some ceramic and foams in the other trays, tank size 125 Litre. I measured my nitrates before putting in and I am ashamed to say they were pretty high at 40ppm. I know bad me. I have run the media for a little over 24 hrs and tested my water, 3 time on different kits to be sure, as I was surprised to see that my nitrates are now at 0. I am so impressed with this media and will be stocking up on this to distribute to the other aquariums I take care of. This is just simply amazing.

Thanks for the order - That is a strange one as we've had lots of people say similar things about an instant reduction in nitrate like that and to be honest we can't work out why that would happen so fast. The majority would continue with no / low nitrate but some do rise again before falling and staying permanently low. We are speculating that it could be due to some of the trace elements having an immediate effect on nitrate but don't know for sure. Thanks for the report and I'd be interested to hear if levels stay zero or rise again, if so how long it takes to return down.

If you have 1kg of fluval media in there you will still need to get the 1kg Biohome. Biohome standard and plus will take up about the same volume as the fluval media and Biohome mini ultra and ultimate will take up more space than the fluval media so you should have some spare from a 1kg bag.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people go ape over matrix as if the water can't find the inside of the media then regardless if it has 'x' amount of surface area it won't filter any better than a cheapo media. The biohome media allows water (and therefore ammonia and nitrite) right into its core allowing for maximum efficiency. Thanks for watching and appreciating, man.

Excellent stuff. Firmly convinced that this media (and the little gel bacteria balls sent out with the filter kit) are the reason I managed a stable fishless cycled tank in three and a half weeks (125 litre tank). 1 Kg perfectly fills a tray in my AllPondSolutions 1000EF and I'm about to order another Kg to replace the remaining noodles and bio-balls and see if I can get enough anaerobic bacteria going to tackle my high Nitrates (roughly 40ppm out of the tap!). Very glad I stumbled onto your product before starting out keeping tropical fish, thanks.

Yes with 2kg in a system of only 125 litres you should have no problems nailing the nitrates down but the media does take a few months to mature to the point where nitrates fall (the anaerobic bacteria responsible for nitrate reduction set up much slower than the aerobic bacteria)

Rafal Balcerzak Yes if you have a mature system then only swap out about 25% of the old media each week so the change over takes about 4 weeks. That way you should not notice a dip in filter performance while the new media matures.

Watch the video 'How to set up an external canister filter' (either the short one or the 12 minute version which has more detail). The filter I used in that one took 3kg so compare yours to that and that will give you an idea on how to set up your filter and how much media you will need. Failing that send me the tray sizes you want to fill with media and I can work it out for you.

As each kg takes up approx. 1.4 cubic litres 5kg would fill 7 cubic litres, so just under half the bucket.

No worries, I generally just put out videos I think will help people. Some are on very obscure topics but others like the canister filter ones will help anyone with a canister filter so thanks for sharing.
