Omg Layne you are such a lifesaver! This makes so much sense coming from a history of anorexia and then gaining 20kgs (over 40 pounds) over the next year and then losing 10kgs again from calorie restriction. I finally understand why just cutting calories is a really bad idea and why I am maintaining my weight on such a low caloric value! Thank you so much. I am going to try what you are saying, slowly increasing my calories and restoring my metabolism!

Awesome stuff. Wish I knew this before I completely screwed my metabolism with extreme calorie restriction. Only 4 months in and still a long way to go on my road to recovery.

I dieted for a year w/ terrible results. Eating 1000 to 1400 calories max for an entire year. A 150 lb male, 5 foot 7. This guy is spot on, I stopped dieting one day because I was fed up w/ no results. So I saw no reason to continue. Anyway a year later I'm still 150 lb but eating 2500 calories a day. Thanks Dr. Layne norton videos really helped me.

Great video. I’ve been a trainer for nearly 15 years and many of my clients have been college age females. I can’t tell you how common this is. I used to call it the rebound effect before people finally started talking about it. Unfortunately, everyone wants the quick fix and the diet industry wants to make money. This perpetuates the idea of restriction and dieting. I have a client right now who I started working with because she can’t lose weight and when I looked at her intake, she was barely eating 1,000 cal a day...and has been doing so for 3 years. I have her on reverse dieting. Every week she comes to me talking about cutting. I’m sending her this video. Thanks for making it so straightforward. I always come to your channel because I know that you bring the experience and you always reference actual imperial research.

I am really glad that someone else other than myself is finally saying this! All too often I have seen so called "coaches" go and starve their athletes and have them spend half their lives on a treadmill going at 1.5 miles an hour. I am really happy to see that thousands have taken the time to hear the lesson. It's about time!

My boyfriend showed me this because I'm struggling with eating enough because I was stalling in my weight loss and getting upset. So, virtually, I was starving myself. Thank you for this video. It helped open my eyes.

I realize this was posted years ago, but thank you. This explains a lot! I'm sure, 8 years after my last cut, the metabolic damage has been reversed. But the,way it jacked with my way of looking at food still has me, to this day, having a hard,time fully committing to normal and healthy weight-loss methods for regular purposes The worst damage for me was psychological. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Many have helped me. I appreciate you.

You hit the nail on the head Layne. I am one of the many people who have experience almost all of the situations you talked about in the video. This video clears up SO MANY questions that I have had. I was wondering how you felt about weighing yourself weekly, biweekly, or monthly. I feel as if part of my problem was that I was dropping calories too fast and not giving my body enough time to respond to the new caloric intake. Thanks again for what you are doing, this helps a lot.

Layne, I want to thank you for making this video. I'm a personal trainer, I have so many clients as well as friends who struggle with this type of thing. I will be sharing it with a lot of people because in my opinion you are THE expert when it comes to nutritional information! You understand it from both a scientific as well as practical perspective and that combination is both rare and very refreshing (compared to all the Bro science out there, or the academics who don't work with clients).

I dieted to 800 calories per day. I am 5.3 and weighed 121 pounds.. but I had tummy fat and I tried everything but couldn't get rid of it. Suddenly 1 day I started loosing a lot of hair and doctors found out I have hypothyroidism. I chose not to take the medicines but to get to the root cause of the problem. I read alot of literature and finally found that calorie restrictions for a long time can result in hormonal imbalances. I dieted for 4 years on 800 calories per day. Now m slowly eating 1500 calories per day. I have gained some weight back but I don't care coz I wanna get my hormones balanced. Thank you for the informative video..

@@biolayne1 Dr Layne, I know everyone's body is different, but typically how long does it take to slowly ease back increasing our calories to repair our screwed up metabolism from very low calorie diet and quickly refeeding to the point of we retain fat now? Is this (reverse dieting) something that normally takes up to a year for the metabolism to get back to work as per normal? Thanks.
@C0d0ps
@C0d0ps Год назад
@@summerrose1545 In this video I think he said 6-9 months after his 7 month cut. Which roughly translates to a 1:1 ratio to cutting and re-feeding cycle.

Excellent post! As a trainer, and someone with a chemistry background, and who does constant research into actual scientific studies instead of reading the junk that's out there for consumer "diet" info, I've found very similar results to what you say. Good job, I'm going to forward this on the sites I mentor. Everyone needs to watch this.

Layne this video was EXCELLENT. This topic is so crucial for competitors and non competitors alike. There are (as you said namely women) many out there who are experiencing this and don't even compete or think about stepping on the stage. Starvation diets and overtraining (way TOO MUCH cardio) is practiced by so many regular folks in the gym thinking they're bettering their health and body composition. Thanks! I'm definitely sharing this with everyone I know.

Layne, you killed it with this vlog. I wrote a whole 5 page essay on metabolic damage and most of the citations were Scott Abel and the rest was straight up talking to some people who suffered or suffer from metabolic damage (they were very hard to come by) so the prof. thought I was slightly looney but I wish you had this video out back in Oct. lol.

I followed over from SouixCountry thread re: met. damage. Thanks for a great video. Although not a competitor, I (likely) suffer from severe MD from too many years in endurance sports at 1200-1400 calories per day, including a half-ironman with only 1500 calories on race day. After walking away from endurance for 2 years, I've watched a 50lb gain and no idea how to stop it. You've been the first resource to really say how to start working back to a normally functioning metabolism. Thanks!

It is such a relief to know I don't have to feel guilty or tired all the time because of food. I've maintained a weight loss of 35 pounds for a year. Currently, my cal. intake is lower then ever and my cardio is higher then when I lost the weight and I've been so frustrated I haven't had success losing more. I consider myself a 'clean' eater until this video. I'm scared/nervous to SLOWLY up my intake but I researched macros and look forward to getting fit rather then trying to be skinny. THANKS!

Usually if something only happens to a minority of people, many will say it's not true.
