Since making this video biOrb has re-released the Intelligent Heater system. See my new video: 'The best heater?' here: • biOrb Aquarium | Intel...
VIDEO DESCRIPTION...
There's a large range of aquarium heaters available on the market. It is important that you get the correct heater for your aquarium and a reliable product produced by a well known manufacturer.
Heaters covered in this video can be found here:
- biOrb Heater pack, including a fitting for "orb shaped" biOrbs: 50W: amzn.to/3vJ2mKg
- Hydor Theo 50w: amzn.to/3pIEq5J
- Hydor Theo 100w: amzn.to/3KcENxo
- Eheim 50w thermo-preset: amzn.to/3Cqe4L1
- Fluval 50w submersible: amzn.to/35R05C0
- Hydor Theo 25w: amzn.to/3IOWvXu
- Fluval P25 submersible: amzn.to/3KvYfFw
Getting the correct heating for your fish is important. Fish require a consistent, non-changing temperature for optimum health.
Unless you need to specifically adjust the temperature for specific fish species, a preset heater is probably the best choice as this will provide a constant temperature suitable for most tropical fish species.
TYPES OF HEATER...
There are two main types of aquarium heaters:
- Preset heaters: where the manufacturer has an already factory set temperature that can not be adjusted. Preset heaters tend to be between 24C to 25C, providing an ideal water temperature for most tropical fish. The heater will warm-up the water to the set temperature and then turn off (and on) in order to regulate and maintain the temperature. A preset is the best choice for aquariums and most aquarium fish and for tanks containing a mix of fish species.
- Adjustable temperature: Some fish species may prefer cooler heated water, whilst others may prefer warmer conditions. Adjustable heaters allow you to set a temperature to meet the specific requirements of your fish. These are a good choice if you need to maintain a temperature range that is below or above that normally provided by a preset heater (24-25C).
Both adjustable and preset are thermostatically controlled. They maintain the tank water at the set temperature. Thus, if external temperatures (e.g. a hot summer!) increase, the heater will heat the water less (and may turn off for long periods of time - only turning back on if water temps drop below the heater setting). There is no need to keep adjusting the heater temperature setting to deal with hot or cold weather seasons.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR...
When choosing a heater you will probably look for a heater that is:
- small in size and discreet. This allows it to be hidden within the biOrb and behind ornaments, plants etc without being visually distracting.
- fully submersible. Not all heaters can be fully submersed as some require a part to remain above the water line. This is very problematic in most biOrb designs. Fully submersible heaters can be placed at any height in a biOrb. In general, they can be placed lower down (i.e. towards the bottom) providing a better means of heat distribution within the water.
- can be used both horizontally and vertically. Many heaters are only designed for use in a vertical position. If you want to place the heater in any position you may prefer to have a heater that can be placed in either position.
It is advisable to choose a heater that:
- is produced by a very reputable and well known manufacturer.
- comes with a good guarantee period (e.g. 2 years).
- is the correct size for your aquarium. The general guide is to use 1w of heater per litre of aquarium water.
- With adjustable heaters, do not get a heater that is too small or one that is too powerful for your tank size

Hi Mark, Enjoyed the in depth information on the various heaters. One thing l would add is its good to have a spare one in your essentials kit (l do). It would be typical that your heater packs up when you are unable to visit the local shop or late at night. Dead handy to have one to put in straight away.

Yea thats exactly what i do, i have a spare for my Biorb but also a 300watt heater, so if i notice my water has gone real cold (that happened few months ago on my bigger tank with a Oase heater) then i throw in a bigger heater to heat it up real quick, you can use a overpowered heater, it just heats it up quicker.

Thanks Peter. Yes, it's a good point. You never know when a heater if going to suddenly die! I have spare heaters (now including all those I purchased for the video (I could now set up a heater shop!), and air pumps and even PowerPac that will run a tank in the event of power outage (the worst scenario).

Mark, I have enjoyed your videos. I don't know if it's worth your time, but if it is, you should see if you're able to post links for US buyers. I've been unable to use the UK links. Thank you for all the wonderful advice!
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb Месяц назад
Hi Jennifer. Yes, I tried that at one stage but found the links I provided went out of date often in the US for some reason. I have many times helped people to find products (or similar) in the US. As I have my own account with Amazon UK I will often get an alert if the products in my links become unavailable - this is helpful as it means I can update links or add alternative suppliers. My videos are watched in 6 different countries so its not always easy to guide people to products that I use or suggest, especially if those products are not available everywhere. When biOrb bring out new products it can often be many months before they show up in the US and other countries... the release of biOrb Pearly Media being a good example of how long those delays can be. Hopefully adding the UK links (products) allows people to find them or very similar (as a good starting point). If there is anything you are struggling to find let me know and I can certainly see if I can find things for you. Hope that helps. Best wishes to you, Mark

Hi Jennifer. The links are really aimed at trying to help people find things. I had a lot of requests, in the early days, to provide links to where people can get the products that I test and use. It is a subject I can often struggle with (links becoming out of date) but if those links help you find what you need, that is really brilliant! I'm afraid the aquarium industry is saturated with products, many of which are hype and make promises that will never deliver. I try to keep things basic and just focus on those products that I know work. They are the things I use myself for my 5 biOrbs (and garden pond). So, mission completed! :) My two boys (7 and 8) each have a biOrb and have names for every fish they have. I'm not sure how they identify each individual fish... but they do!! The Loop is a really lovely tank, I'm sure your twins will really love it. My videos hopefully cover the basics but please do shout if you need any support and guidance on setting-up the Loop etc. I'm very happy to help. Best wishes from across the big blue sea, Mark

Hi Mark and thank you for all the information you take time to puton step by step. I have a question and that is how do you deal with black Algee. I really appreciate it if you could help. Thank you in advance. Blossom.
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
Hi Blossom. First question... are you sure it is black/red algae (not staghorn)? It sounds like you have high phosphates (nutrients) in your water. Most algae growth is associated with not undertaking enough water changes (either the frequency of change or the quantity of water changed each time) and/or the build up of waste material under the ceramic media (over feeding). Or it could be related to high phosphates in your tap water (but, unusual!) Sorry, I do need to ask some questions: - What size aquarium do you have? - How many/ and what species of fish do you have? - How frequently do you undertake water changes and how much water do you remove each time? - Is there waste building-up under your ceramic media? - Do you use a vac to remove waste (under the ceramic media)? - How old is the aquarium - since first setting it up with fish? - Does your water supply (i.e. water company) show high levels on phosphates/ nitrates on their website? The bottom line is that algae will not have a detrimental impact on your fish! So, this is nothing to worry about at all. It can likely be fixed with changes to your water maintenance regime. If you can let me know the detail regarding my questions above I'm sure I can help reduce or fix the problem! Best, Mark

Hi Mark! Seems like a bit of a silly question but, how do you get the heater chord through the Flow30 MCR lid?
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 8 месяцев назад
Hi David. No, that's not a silly question... it is the one thing biOrb don't show in their product manual. To fit a heater, completely remove the lid insert (consisting of three sections: Large LED light tray (clear plastic); coloured plastic insert black or white; and the round LED light) from the tank. Add your heater to the tank through the large lid aperture (and place the heater towards the rear of the tank). The heater chord will come up from the heater and through the aperture (towards the rear of the aperture) . Then add back in the large LED light tray, so that the chord goes through the smaller of the tray holes (it is more of a large notch in the tray than a full hole and may have a slight key hole" shape). The rest of the lid components can then be added back to complete the lid tray. The larger hole, at the front of the lid section, is intended to be a feeder hole (not that I ever use it) but is also where you put in you finger to remove the whole lid. This hole is not used for the heater cable. Hope that makes sense. Best, Mark

@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb Год назад
Hi Stephanie. Thanks for watching. That's an easy one to answer...but it's not a cheap one. In my opinion, the best heater, for any biOrb (60L or less) is the biOrb Intelligent Heater. It is the heater I have in all my tanks and comes with a very fine cable (white). As I said, they are a bit pricy but sometimes the best solution always is! LOL. I'm afraid I am not aware of any other heater on the market that comes with a fine diameter cable, only this biOrb one. The heater can be placed anywhere in the tank and works well tucked in at the bottom (on the ceramic media) and amongst decorations, plants etc. The fine wire is easier to conceal and very easily fits through the lid of any biOrb. See my video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1rM3JRR3Jds.html. Best wishes, Mark

Hi Stephanie. Yes, you might struggle in the US and there are only selected retailers in UK that are selling it (the key one being Aquacadabra, but I'm not sure if they ship beyond EU). I am afraid I would struggle to find a supplier in the US. If you are unable to find it via the likes of Amazon or eBay then clearly you might struggle. Putting aside the biOrb Intelligent heater, the "standard" heater sold by biOrb is designed to work with all biOrbs. So, the heater cable will fit the lid of all biOrbs (amzn.to/3iJ5FwT) including Halo. This a 50W adjustable heater so is suitable for all biOrbs up to (and including) 60L. Best wishes, Mark

Another useful vídeo that brings essencial information on the moment of purchasing a heater. I don’t know if you agree but the heaters that have temperature adjustement are important to face the temperature oscillatons inside a house. For exemple, there are some houses that get more intense temperatures in summer, in that cases you can low the heater temperature. Keep up the good vídeos!
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
Hi Goncalo. Many thanks. Both adjustable and preset are thermostat controlled. Which means they both maintain the tank water at the set temp. In warmer ambient temps, such as hot summer beyond the UK, the heaters will basically heat the water less (they may even turn off for long periods during the day if the water temp is reached due to external temps). If the set heater temp is 25C, the heater will only heat (i.e turn on) when the water temp drops below this temperature. So, you shouldn't need to adjust the heater temp to match what is going on outside of the tank, the thermostat does that for you. The main difference between adjustable and preset is that with an adjustable you can set a higher or lower permanent temperature than that provided by a preset. Presets are normally set at between 24 to 25C which is very suitable for most tropical fish and is a great temp for mixed fish community. However, some fish species prefer different temperature parameters, only an adjustable heater would allow you to tailor a specific temperature that suits a specific species of fish (e.g betta prefer water above 25C). Other fish may need heated water, but prefer it less than 24C or 25C. Being able to adjust heating is also useful to promote breeding of certain types of fish, such as harlequin rasbora which are happy with a normal temp of around 24- 25C but, to breed, the temperature needs to be elevated for a period of time to above 28C. A 24-25C preset heater would not allow you to set a suitable breeding temperature in this case. Being able to increase temperature can also be used to treat certain fish diseases within the aquarium (as long as that increased temp can be tolerated by all species within the tank). Being able to increase temperature (temporarily) can also help to speed up the initial process of tank cycling (i.e establishing beneficial bacteria). For most people, a biOrb a preset heater is probably a good choice, especially if they are planning to have a mixed community and need around 24-25C. Thanks as always for your comments, and I hope the above clarifies what I perhaps didn't cover in the video. With best wishes, Mark

Hi how do you fit the wire on a heater via the lid on a biorb halo?
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 10 месяцев назад
Lol. That seems to be an "in fashion question"! The heater wire needs to feed through the "squarish" hole on the lid. As someone mentioned previously, it is the hole that "looks like it has been made with a pair of pliers"! The large hole in the lid is intended to be used to feed fish with... not that a lot of people do this!
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 10 месяцев назад
On a biOrb, the lid is made of two different parts (an outer ring and then another larger part that consists of the led light). The heater cable goes through the hole in the outer ring.

hey! i’ve just set up my new biorb with your help but i’m finding the air pump to be incredibly noisy. can it be switched off at night or do i need to keep it running full time?
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
Hey. Generally I would suggest to leave the air running in an aquarium (turning off for short period of time is fine). Turning off the air pump all night would certainly reduce water oxygen content for the fish but can also trigger change in other things such as pH. It is fair to say that nearly all aquariums will produce sound - but the sound can perceived as noise if it is too high and how the sound is perceived will vary from person to person. I think your first thing is to establish exactly where the noise is coming from. Are you very sure it is the air pump itself? Is the pump placed on wooden floor and have you tried moving the pump around in different positions? If so the air pump can be elevated off the floor by hanging it off the back of its own plug (search on RU-vid to see how to do that). Also, do you have too much air flow coming up through the aquarium bubble tube? See my video on "too many bubbles?" Normally, "noise" from a biOrb is associated with the base of the aquarium itself (often because its base is resonating against the unit/surface it is standing on). Let me know if any of the above relates to the noise you are getting.

What heater can i use with the biorb 15?
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb Год назад
I suppose the question is whether you actually need a heater? You could easily opt for fish species that do not require one and thus avoid adding something to the tank that will always look relatively bulky (in a 15L). If you plan to go for fish species that require a heated tank you would need to opt for a thermostatically controlled heater in 25w or 50w. Both of these sizes work in a 15L. The biOrb heater pack or Hydor Theo heaters are the most compatible. One of the key things when choosing a heater, and often overlooked, is the thickness of the power cable. Some heater brands use very thick cables and it is not always possible to fit the cable through the hole at the top of a biOrb tank. The biOrb and Hydor heater cables are designed to fit. With a brand new tank the steps to follow are: - Understand your water supply quality (pH, nitrate levels etc) - Identify fish species that are a really good match to your water supply quality and also to the size limits of your aquarium. - Choose from those fish whether you prefer species that need heated water or fish that don't. Hope that helps.

Hi again. I think it less about the tank design but the choice of central sculpture and then the back drop of biOrb plants added to it. With most tanks you can mask most of the appearance of the heater cable. Tanks with a vertical wall (rather than curved/orb shapes) are likely to be the best options. When choosing "plants" go for those that will occupy most of the height of the tank's water (right up to the water surface), even if this means getting a slightly larger plant size for the tank and trimming them back with scissors! As you say, a black wall (backdrop) is a good idea. Unfortunately biOrb have YET AGAIN stopped producing the Intelligent Heater - a big shame as it was one of their best products! An alternative option, in terms of the horrid standard black heater cables, might be to use shrink tube amzn.to/3TUDyuL. This would probably allow for the wire component within the tank to have a different colour? Life would be a lot easier if biOrb would get their Intel. Heater back in production! The only thing to do is to find a second hand one and the only one I am aware of currently also includes an aquarium etc: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275690524613?epid=1282490282&hash=item40306f8fc5:g:6vQAAOSwmEJj7Vji&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8IRUVR8EryarSX%2BqA7y%2FOv%2FlbK9mH6h95xChZYr0M4txIor94FdaeTU%2BUZRqiHJxaHOAx566viRNEJkAXBxeIAIQEqBo%2BW1FDM5Cu2RAIGfZyQvlowEI3Hy82H6YBzADB2OAgLMAmTC%2FzlpHN8OcTRuy3IjrGm623GXKlzg%2F6jFFpjMbDkJWQeZodyepNF6SB7YyuxWnoFl6N6QFuS2jbNDUHnP67btyq4Qegl%2Fllx1uUGiJ3MtoiJN9d83NBGMRue%2BbU2znXJyAY6j2dptSiWNooTmGetxThGviUgMOEEcMZHC3SqJEjv06Sn7yRkh%2Fsg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR9zZ28ecYw

@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
That's a great idea my friend and would certainly cover a power outage scenario. A battery air pump is also something I hadn't thought about, as it would be a great (and cheap) back-up to have just in case your pump suddenly drops dead! And it can happen!! Great call. Yes, go for it! Give your sister my channel details - if any problems happen with the tank I can advise her - she can then leave you alone to enjoy your vacation :)

Thanks for the very helpful video, I am currently watching all your videos while I am waiting for the Biorb Halo 60 to be available in store again (waiting more than 2 years now) is it possible for you to test if the Eheim preset one fits in the holder that comes with the Biorb heater? I will be needing that because of the orb shape. Or do you think the Biorb heater looks less obtrusive in the tank anyway? I would prefer the smart heater eventually, but at the moment it's not available here in the Netherlands, and there seem to be some bad reviews about it in terms of reliability...

@StepbyStep-biOrb Год назад
Hi Robin. That's a very long wait for a 60 Halo!! I have an Eheim preset and can confirm it doesn't fit the biOrb holder. In terms of the biOrb intelligent heater, this is substantially less obtrusive than any other heater that I am aware of, that also goes for the fine white cable associated with this heater. The biOrb heater doesn't need to be placed on the side wall of the aquarium so there is no need to think about the need for a holder. This biOrb one works very well just placed on the tank bottom (like I have in all cases). I have the Intelligent Heater in all my tanks and I don't have any association with Oase biOrb (I don't need to say positive things, just give my own view!). I've NEVER had a problem with any of those heaters, and for many years. I'm sure there will always be bad reviews, put simply, that goes for any product you may wish to look into... that's the nature of the Internet, Amazon etc. Best wishes, Mark.

Hi Mark. Me again! With another question for you. I have just managed to get a second hand intelligent heater. But I’m struggling to plug the air pump and light into the power pod. The pod has a 2 pin connection for these, but the pump and light have a jack connection (same as the actual heater connection). Is this the same as yours or am I miss something? Apologies as well as I may not have described the connections with their official names (just to confuse you!). Thanks as ever. Hope you’re keeping well

@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
Hi Matt. You are probably trying to mix-n--match the old biOrb system (power pod) with the new system (no power pod)! I do exactly the same! Unfortunately, you will need to use a separate/small extension lead (straight to mains) and run the pump and light using the different power supply. I hope that answers your question. Best, Mark

Lol. You are doing exactly what I do! But, well done on getting the heater - they are a bit like hen's teeth to get. The intelligent heater is certainly worth all the messing around of needing to have a second electricity supply for pump and lighting! If only biOrb hadn't stopped producing the intelligent heater! Best, Mark

Would the biorb heater be suitable for zebra danios or do they not need one? In a biorb 15L. This last week has been cold in UK.
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb Год назад
Hi Karina. I love zebra danios!! A brilliant fish and so greatly overlooked! The real question is whether you really need a heater? Zebras are very well suited to cooler conditions but are happy to be in a water temp range of 15 to 27C. Now, that's a broad temp range compared to most fish! Note that "Prefer" is not the same as what they will tolerate. Unless your water temp is getting much cooler than this (15C) I would say don't bother with a heater. Zebras are happy with gradual/slow changes in temp - and keeping them at room temp meets this requirement. Unless you plan to add tropical fish (needing say 24C) then room temp should be fine for ZD. Hope that helps, Mark

Hi Mark. Does your intelligent heater transformer get hot? Mine does and also temp running at about 79/80. It is only 2 months old. Just wondered if thus us normal 😮
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb Год назад
Hi Paula. I wouldn't say the transformers run hot but certainly warm. I think that is the norm for transformers, battery chargers etc. There can be variation is the temp outputs (i.e the factory setting). Most of mine run in the 75-77F range but one runs the same as yours at 80 (it always has, since new). The ideal temp range for most tropical fish is 70 to 85. But, the normal acceptable range for most tropical fish is 70 to 90. Some fish have specific temp ranges but most are reasonably broad. The key thing is that temps remain fairly stable. How does the heater temp you have compare to the preferred range of the fish you have?

Can I use any 25 watt in the 15 l baby bio orb lady at pets at home said putting heater on would melt the plastic
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
Hi Molly. Basically yes you can. Ignore any advice from pets at home... they always seem to give incorrect advice! Try another shop such as maidenhead aquatics! The key thing is that you will need a heater that is suited for use in the orb shape (i.e one that can be attached to a curved tank). Personally, I will go for a factory pre-set (not adjustable). If you have lots (and lots) of money the biOrb intelligent heater is perfect but... it costs substantially more than most heaters. It can be put directly onto the ceramic media at the back of the tank so doesn't need to be attached the "glass". Technically you don't need a 25w... a 50w (thermo preset) would work as this would only heat the water in a 15L to the set temp (say 25C) and then would automatically switch on and off to maintain that given temp. It won't overheat the tank. Hope that helps. M

@@StepbyStep-biOrb would a bettAtherm under gravel heater work or Is 15l too big for this one
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
Hi. I cant say I've ever used one and I wouldn't be too keen on an under gravel system. For an orb 15L you would need to get one with a holder to allow fixing on to the curve of the tank. So either this one: amzn.to/3LfIfcr or instead go with the similar one produced by Superfish (50w heater) with one of these holders: amzn.to/3xo7JOW. See this add as it shows the 15l with a 50w heater and adapter: amzn.to/3eQwnBt. Hydor also do a 25w heater that will also fit the holder/adapter for a curved tank.

Just wondered if you could shed some light I have the classic 30l biorb which I have just converted into a tropical tank. I purchased a heater from my local Maidenhead aquatics store, it’s a aqua-nano 50w heater as I couldn’t get my hands on the biorb version as they are out of stock globally. The problem I’m having is the temperature I have it set it to 25 degrees Celsius but the tank is 26.5 degrees and doesn’t seem to be cooling down this is slightly higher than I wanted the tank to be. I’m aiming to get it around 25.5 degrees Celsius as a perfect temp for the fish. Do you have any suggestions on heater positioning or how I could gradually lower the temp?.
@StepbyStep-biOrb
@StepbyStep-biOrb 2 года назад
Hi Lisa. You need to use the temp control dial on the heater as a guide only - so if you have the set dial to 25 but it is heating to 26.5 then you need to adjust the temp dial down further - try 23 or 24C on the dial and see what that does. The aquarium water temp will take some time to drop though. Are you heating the aquarium with fish being present? best, Mark
@lisabarlow6888
@lisabarlow6888 2 года назад
@@StepbyStep-biOrb yes I added the fish with colony, I have turned it down to 23 so I’ll see if that makes any difference it is still in the green area of my thermometer. The temperature has not really changed since climatising the fish and the fish are active and look healthy. I only need it to drop 1 degree so not much of a change for the fish my aim is to get it to 25.5 as that’s a middle ground for the fish in the tank.

@@StepbyStep-biOrb all sorted now it was as simple as turning the heater so it sits straight up and not slanted and notching the dial down to 24 degrees Celsius resulting in perfect temperature. Thank you for replying. Best wishes for the new year. Lisa
